The collection includes indentures for land transactions, records of road surveys, wills, articles of agreement for employment, tenant leases, subpoenas, land search records, specifications for building a house, mortgages, accounts, receipts for payment of back taxes and a small amount of correspondence. Also present are inventories of household items, farm implements, and livestock in the possession of Joshua and Lucy Smith at the time of his death in 1811, and of their son Richard Wallace Smith's household items at the time of his death in 1868, as well as a photocopy of a Smith family tree. less

The Provoost (Provost) family, of French Huguenot descent, were early settlers of New Amsterdam. David Provoost (1670-1724) was a merchant and Mayor of the City of New York from 1699 to 1700. His nephew John Provoost (d. 1767) was the son of Samuel Provoost and Mary Spratt Provoost Alexander, prominent New York City merchants, and the stepson of James Alexander, a prominent New York lawyer and politician. The Provoost family papers include a manuscript copy of David Provoost's genealogy of the Provoost family of New Amsterdam (compiled 1724), made by John Provoost in 1742, as well as two letters from John Provoost at Curacao to his parents dated 18 May 1736 and 21 June 1736, concerning shipment and prices of goods, addressed to his stepfather, James Alexander, in New York. Also present are some genealogical notes dated 1785, and a letter from Lucy D. Akerly to a Mr. King, 6 Oct. 1897, loosely laid in, concerning the Provoost family. less

Frederick Innes Allen (1859-1938) of Auburn, New York was an attorney who served as Commissioner of Patents during the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. His wife, Cornelia Margaret Seward, was the granddaughter of William H. Seward. Frederick I.Allen's research into the history of the Allen family includes correspondence, genealogical notes, clippings, photographs, printed material, and family charts. Original family documents in the collection dated 1706-1838 consist chiefly of correspondence, land records, and wills of Daniel Allen of Greenfield, Saratoga County, New York and Adams, Massachusetts. Also present is a notebook containing poetry, spelling or handwriting exercises, recipes, and miscellaneous notes. R. Burnham Moffat (1861-1916) was a New York City attorney and the author of several genealogical works. The Barclay, Clarkson, Moffat, and Pierrepont genealogical research papers consist chiefly of the correspondence and research files of R. Burnham Moffat created in the course of his research on the Barclay, Clarkson, Moffatt, and Pierrepont families. The collection also contains additional letters and research notes of John J. Pierrepont, Henry E. Pierrepont, and numerous clippings, particularly of family obituaries, 1791-1939. Edward Braman (1833-1907) of Hyde Park, N.Y. was a genealogist and local historian. The Braman family genealogical research papers consist of genealogical notes, compiled by Edward Braman, on the Braman family of Hyde Park, N.Y., New London County, Conn., and elsewhere, and the related Adams, Teel, Hitt, Dusenbury, Weaver, Garrison, Russell, Sexton, Van Vliet, and other families, as well as original family documents and manuscripts. The notes, dating 1853-1906, are mostly in bound volumes, organized by family name. Original papers include Cyrus Braman's manuscript singing book of hymn and psalm tunes, 1782-1783; a notice to him from the City of Norwich, with instructions for nightwatch duty, 1797; registers of sermons, 1826-1829; Samuel Braman's commissions as sergeant in the New York State Militia, 1825, and as Captain in the 84th Regiment, Infantry, 1830; an account book, 1840-1845, belonging to William Steele, the son in law of Braman's great-great-grandfather, who transacted business with John Jacob Astor; and assorted deeds, financial records, and notices. less

Staubach (1870-1966) worked as a sales executive for the Burroughs Corporation, served as an officer in the 8th Infantry Regiment, New York National Guard, and was the first president of the Century Road Club Association. The Charles P. Staubach family history notebooks, compiled by Staubach from 1933-1955 and continued by his sons, 1966-1977, concern the history of his and his wife's families across multiple generations. The collection contains genealogical and biographical information on his parents, Baldwin Staubach and Elise Schwab, his wife Edith Arnold's parents, George Arnold and Frances Dubois, and numerous allied families. John Dean Fish (1846-1935) was a genealogist and contributor to the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record. The John Dean Fish papers consist of his genealogical correspondence and research materials, including family records, charts, notes and writings, and research files, pertaining to the Fish family of England in America. Although his published work, The Fish Family of Great Bowden in Leicestershire, England, traces the family's roots back for centuries in England, the bulk of the material in this collection pertains to a projected later work on the members of the family after their emigration to America in the eighteenth century. His research for The Fish Family in America included many branches of the Fish family throughout the United States, the majority of which settled in New York and New England. Among the prominent members of the family were Hamilton Fish (1808-1893), a politician who served as Governor of New York and Secretary of State under President Grant, and his son, Stuyvesant Fish (1851-1923), president of the Illinois Central Railroad. The collection, the bulk of which reflects his research activities from the 1890s through the 1920s, contains his correspondence with, and documents collected from, various individuals, government agencies, and historical societies, as well as files he compiled on individual family members and the towns in which they lived. Also present is a manuscript of his work The Fish Family of Great Bowden in Leicestershire, England; an original 1732 record (and typed transcript) of a legal dispute which involved Martha and Moses Fish of Stonington, CT; and a copy made by Fish in 1864 of an 1811 extract from the diary of Asa Fish. less

Peter Roome Warner (1804-1896) was a New York City insurance executive and the author of Descendents of Peter Willemse Roome (New York: Daniel H. Gildersleeve, 1883). The Warner family record book, 1765-1894, begun by William Warner (1742-1807) and continued by his son, Leonard Warner (1768-1839) and grandson, Peter Roome Warner (1804-1896), contains family records, genealogies and charts on the Warner and allied families of New York City. Related families include the Bogardus, Brouwer, and Jansen families, among others. The records and genealogies, the bulk of which were written by Peter Roome Warner, are written on blank leaves bound in an engraved 18th-century mathematical exercise book, William Kippix' A New Book of Arithmetick, with some manuscript calculations at the end of the volume. less
