Scope and arrangement
The Mitchell Family Papers consist of materials collected by Cornelius von Erden Mitchell, (1883-1966), author of Ancestry of William Spingler Mitchell, Cornelius von Erden Mitchell, John Van Beuren Mitchell, which had belonged to his ancestors. In additional to the Mitchell family, there is material in this collection from the Abbott, Anderson, Banks, Beach, Berrien, Brevoort, Davis, Fonerden (von Erden), Leverich, Lyon, Morris, Prescott, Reynolds, Rogers, Spingler, Van Beuren and Warde families.
The materials in this collection include account books (1785-1836) belonging to Henry Spingler of New York, personal correspondence between the members of the families, particularly Rev. Edward Mitchell (1769-1834) and his son, the Hon. William Mitchell (1801-1886), professional correspondence, indenture documents, legal documents, certificates, copies of sixteenth and eighteenth century wills, family trees, ancestral charts and lists of pedigree of various members of the families. Also included are military documents (1800-1876), such as regimental orders, correspondence and certificates of Col. Michael M. Van Beuren, Major John Berrien, Hon. William Mitchell and Cornelius Berrien Mitchell as well as photographs (small, large and oversized) and daguerreotypes (1848-1927) of members of the families, particularly of the Davis, Mitchell and Van Beuren families, and their residences in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York, sermons and other religious writings (1810-1834,) by Rev. Edward Mitchell, scrapbooks (1875-1925) kept by Cornelius Berrien Mitchell and John W. A. Davis, and a nineteenth century map and newspaper from Coleraine, Ireland, where the Mitchells came from.
