The collection consists of correspondence and other papers of prominent members of the interrelated McKim and Garrison families collected by Margaret McKim Maloney and others. Included are papers of architect Charles Follen McKim, abolitionists James Miller McKim, William Lloyd Garrison, James H. Garrison, and their descendants. Papers of James Miller McKim, 1828-1882, contain correspondence, accounts, family and personal miscellany, and clippings. Papers of his son Charles Follen McKim, 1857-1908, include correspondence, his diary of a walking tour in 1863, speeches, personal miscellany, and a sketch by Charles Dana Gibson, and printed matter. Also included is correspondence of Margaret McKim Maloney, Wendell Phillips Garrison, William Lloyd Garrison, Jr., Frank J. The Tilden and Hazard family scrapbooks were assembled by Laura Pelton Hazard. Hazard was granddaughter of Samuel J. Tilden's sister Mary B. Tilden. Laura Pelton married William Ayrault Hazard in 1885; the couple had six children. This collection contains photographs, clippings, letters, programs, and other ephemera and memorabilia related to the Tilden family and the Hazard family. The majority of the materials concern Laura and William Hazard and their children, including photographs that show the family at their home Meadow Hall in Cedarhurst, Long Island, as well as on vacation in various locations. Other material relates to family ancestry, Cedarhurst society, and William Hazard’s polo career. Materials related to Samuel J. Tilden and the Tilden family are largely in volumes 1 and 2 and box 1, and include photographic portraits of Tilden family members; correspondence such as letters written by Samuel Tilden to his parents and sister while he was a student at Yale; and clippings such as political cartoons depicting Tilden. less

Charles Patrick Daly (1816-1899) was an American jurist, lecturer and writer who served as a judge of the New York City Court of Common Pleas for over forty years, the last twenty-seven as chief justice. Maria Lydig Daly, his wife, was active in the Democratic Party and various welfare organizations of the Civil War period. Her diaries of this period were published in 1962 under the title: Diary of a Union Lady, 1861-1865. Papers include correspondence; legal papers; writings and lectures; personal and legal scrapbooks; and diaries and notebooks. Also included are papers belonging to Maria Daly, wife of Charles P. The Straus family of New York City were the descendants of Lazarus Straus (1809-1898) and Sara Straus (1823-1876) who emigrated from Otterberg, Germany in the early 1850s with their four children: Isidor (1845-1912), Hermine (1846-1922), Nathan (1848-1931), and Oscar (1850-1926). They settled in Talbotton, Georgia where Lazarus opened a dry goods store. In 1865 the Strauses relocated to New York City and Isidor and Nathan joined their father in establishing L. Straus and Sons, a glass and chinaware store. They became partners with R.H. Macy's & Company in 1888 and by 1892 were also partners in the Brooklyn N.Y. retail company Abraham & Straus. Isidor Straus represented New York City's fifteenth district in the U.S. Congress, 1893-1894; and was founder and president of the Educational Alliance, an organization for immigrants living in New York. He and his wife were among the passengers who lost their lives in the sinking of the Titanic. Oscar Straus served as U.S. ambassador to Turkey from 1887 to 1900 and 1909, Secretary of Commerce and Labor from 1906 to 1908, and advisor to Woodrow Wilson during the first World War. Collection contains correspondence, speeches, photographs, scrapbooks, and other items concerning Lazarus, Oscar and Isidor Straus, and Isidor's sons and grandsons. Family papers include genealogical charts and family history. Oscar and Isidor Straus papers consist of one box of materials concerning Oscar Straus's 1912 campaign for governor of New York and other political and family matters; the remaining eleven boxes are papers of Isidor Straus and include family and business correspondence, speeches and writings, notebooks, scrapbooks, materials related to his political career and to his death on the Titanic, and biographical information. Papers of Isidor Straus's sons consist of personal and business papers with correspondence, speeches, scrapbooks, and clippings. L. Straus & Sons records concern the operations of the partnership. Homer Crane Blake (1822-1880) was a U.S. naval officer. Collection consists of correspondence and other papers relating to Commodore Blake's service in the United States Navy. Includes official letterbook relating to affairs in Africa, China, Cochin China, Japan, and particularly the American mission to establish treaty relations with Korea, 1869-1872; reports of actions of American naval forces against Korean forts (1871); journal kept aboard the U.S.S. Alaska, with observations on currents, weather and other subjects, from New York to Korea via Africa, Cochin China, Japan, and China; scrapbook of clippings and other papers concerning action of the U.S.S. Hatteras with the C.S.S. Alabama in 1862; scrapbook containing material on Homer Kirtland Flanagan Blake as a member of the Class of 1875 at Columbia College; and autographs of many United States Navy officers and other government officials. less

Henry Alexander Scammell Dearborn (1783-1851) of Roxbury, Massachusetts was a politician, militia officer, author and horticulturist. Born in Exeter, New Hampshire, he was the son of Henry Dearborn (1751-1829), an American army officer and statesman, and Dorcas Osgood Marble. The Henry Alexander Scammell Dearborn writings comprise six scrapbook volumes containing his published writings, speeches, and reports, and Dearborn's collected papers regarding his role in the 1842 Dorr Rebellion in Rhode Island. The volumes were compiled by Dearborn for his family between 1844 and 1849; contents date from 1806 to 1849. Horticulture and American politics and government are the chief topics represented in his writings. A few illustrations, mostly botanical, are found within. less

John Wolcott Phelps (1813-1885) was a graduate of West Point, Brigadier General in the U.S. Army, and the presidential candidate of the anti-Masonic American Party in 1880. The collection consists of his correspondence, writings on politics and anti-Masonry, diaries recording his experiences in the Seminole War, Mexican War, the expedition against the Mormons in Utah, and the Civil War, and commonplace books recording his views on slavery, emancipation, presidential elections and other political matters of the day. less

John Foster Carr (1869-1939), lecturer and author, promoted the education and Americanization of immigrants, particularly Italian immigrants. He was founder and director of the Immigrant Publication Society; was active in the American Library Association (ALA), promoting the "Books for Everybody" campaign in New York City; and helped with the ALA's book drive for U.S. armed forces, ca. 1918-1920. He wrote a series of guides to the U.S. for Italian, Jewish and Polish immigrants; and wrote or edited other books and articles on immigration, libraries, Thomas Jefferson, and the Declaration of Independence. Collection contains correspondence, materials relating to "Books for Everybody" campaign, writings by Carr and his family, photographs, and printed matter. Correspondence, 1909-1940, concerns his activities as director of the Immigrant Publication Society, his series of guides for immigrants, speaking engagements, and personal and family matters. "Books for Everybody" materials include legal and financial records, notes, memoranda, and scrapbook of clippings. Writings by Carr consist of manuscripts and typescripts of his speeches on immigrants and Americanization, drafts of articles and projected biographies; galleys and printed copy of book by his wife Emma Lilian Dana; and manuscripts of sermons, 1801-1830, by his great grandfather, Rev. The Sands family of Block Island, Rhode Island, trace their lineage to James Sands, born in 1622 in Staffordshire, England. The collection consists of a genealogical research and personal papers relating to the Sands family. Personal papers include wills, deeds, indentures, and other documents dating from the 17th to 19th centuries. Papers consist of two volumes of collected original deeds, indentures, leases, wills, and miscellaneous correspondence of the Scudder family of Huntington, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, and a family journal and scrapbook in one volume. Volume 3 contains correspondence with Marvyn Scudder and others concerning the death in action of Jack Scudder in France during World War I. Volume 4, Marvyn Scudder scrapbook, is a journal and scrapbook with entries by members of several generations of the family of Moses L. Scudder (1843-1917), railroad president and financier of Halesite, Huntington, recording family matters and social activities, with particular reference to the upbringing of Marvyn and Philip Johnston ("Jack") Scudder. The volume, including numerous photographs of family members and their activities, also served as a guestbook for friends and family visiting the estate. less

The Anne Haight Lee papers consist of a scrapbook, photographs of members of the Lee family, and two manuscripts relating to her family genealogy. The scrapbook, compiled by her father, Robert Perine Lee, contains newspaper clippings, photographs, letters, and other documents from the 1840s through 1910 concerning the Lee, Wiltse, Haight, and Van Wyck families as well as popular news stories. The photographs include pictures of Anne Haight Lee and her husband Earle O. Titus, her father, her mother Anna Miller Haight, her brothers Samuel Van Wyck Lee and Robert P. Lee, Jr., and her grandparents Samuel Haight, and Caroline Bines. Most images date from the 1890s, although there are also several unidentified ferrotypes of children from an earlier date and snapshots of Mr. and Mrs. Titus, 1927-circa 1950. The manuscripts include notes on the life of Andrew Miller and his descendants, including Robert Perine Lee, and notes entitled "Wiltse of Fishkill on Hudson," which trace the ancestry of Lee's grandmother Elizabeth Wiltse. It also gives provides genealogical data on the related Van Kleick, Brinkerhoff, Van Wyck, Lee, and Barent families. less

The Albert Shaw Papers contain correspondence (professional and personal); files concerning the books, articles, and speeches Shaw authored, administrative records and articles from the Review of Reviews; and many records of Shaw's personal life, including financial records, scrapbooks, photographs, ephemera, and his notes on the Shaw family's genealogy, as well as Shaw's personal memoirs. Materials range in date from 1827 to 1953, with the majority of the records falling between 1890 and 1947. Albert Shaw (1857-1947) was an editor, journalist and scholar who spent most of his career as the editor and publisher of the Review of Reviews, a digest of progressive thought and political analysis. Shaw's principal interests were the improvement of municipal government, the relationship of business and organized labor, agricultural reform, international affairs, and contemporary politics and economics, topics which he wrote and spoke on frequently. less

Varian Fry, born in New York City in 1907, was known as "the American Schindler" for his work in aiding over 2,000 endangered people from Nazi-occupied France until he was ousted by the Vichy government in 1941. In the final years of his life, Fry took on the role of family genealogist, collecting correspondence and other material belonging to members of his extended family, and researching his family's origins. The Varian Fry genealogical research papers contains personal papers belonging to members of Varian Fry's extended family dating from 1829 to 1921, family photographs, correspondence relating to Fry's genealogical research dating mainly from 1958 through 1962, and a comprehensive index to the research. less

The Warner Family genealogical research papers consist primarily of the notes and correspondence generated by Mildred Warner Nunn in the course of tracing her family's lineage, as well as an assortment of collected family papers dating from 1633 to 1920. Mildred Warner Nunn was an amateur genealogist working from 1960 to 1962 who traced her descent from the first pastor of the Dutch Collegiate Church of New Amsterdam and to William Warner, who settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts in 1637. less

Bibliographic notes contain cut and pasted titles, typed citations, handwritten notes, correspondence and clippings. Booksellers series, ca. 1879-1937, reflects Eames's long and varied involvement in the book trade with materials such as correspondence, bills, sales catalogs, booklists, and publication notices. New York Public Library/Lenox Library papers, ca. 1883-1935, include lists of holdings (rare books, maps, etc.) prepared by Eames, reports on Library activities by Eames, Library printed matter, clippings, and miscellaneous papers. Personal/family papers, 1850-1937, contain diaries, expense books, legal and estate papers, papers relating to Eames's private library, biographical and genealogical information, family correspondence, and memorabilia. David H. O'Keefe was a shorthand reporter in New York City, active between 1880 and 1926. He was managing editor of Shorthand & Typewriting News, librarian and editor of the New York State Stenographers Association, contributor of shorthand articles to business periodicals, and active in the National Shorthand Reporters Association. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, photographs, and artifacts related to shorthand and the typewriter. Correspondence, 1893-1923, contains letters concerning shorthand and related subjects. Writings include speeches by O'Keefe and others, drafts of monographs including The History of Typewriting, and shorthand notes and notebooks. Also, bibliographies, 1880-1923, about shorthand books and shorthand libraries; photographs of champion typists, shorthand and typing conferences, and shorthand authors; and artifacts, 1883-1921, from business conferences, speed contests and fairs. less

George Ingraham Willis (1912-1988), a native New Yorker, conducted research on the history and genealogy of the Willis family. The collection is primarily composed of his research notes, correspondence and the original documents he assembled relating to the Willis, Ingraham, Davenport, Davis and allied families. The original documents include legal and personal papers of his immediate family, as well as of earlier ancestors. Of note are the personal papers of John Davenport, his maternal great-grandfather, which include extensive correspondence with his wife and business partners, 1823-1866, and documents relating to his tenure on the New York City Board of Education. less
