Charles Patrick Daly (1816-1899) was an American jurist, lecturer and writer who served as a judge of the New York City Court of Common Pleas for over forty years, the last twenty-seven as chief justice. Maria Lydig Daly, his wife, was active in the Democratic Party and various welfare organizations of the Civil War period. Her diaries of this period were published in 1962 under the title: Diary of a Union Lady, 1861-1865. Anthony Jerome Griffin (1866-1935) was a lawyer and U.S. Representative from the Bronx, New York City. He served in the Spanish-American War, 1898-1899; practiced law in the Bronx; was founder and editor of the Bronx Independent; and served four terms as New York State Senator from 1911 to 1915. He also was an inventor and amateur author. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, legal and military records, political and personal papers, memorabilia, and printed matter relating to Griffin's military and political career. Correspondence, 1885-1935, is largely related to his political activities; the remainder pertains to his legislative concerns, immigration matters for his constituents, as well as some personal correspondence. Legal papers, 1885-1930, include case files, estate files and title abstracts. His writings consist of manuscript and typescript versions and galley proofs of poems, plays and stories. Diaries, 1886-1930, and notes and notebooks, 1883-1934, contain his observations on many professional and personal activities in addition to subject files. Military and patent records concern his military service and endeavors in submarine safety. Political papers are a combination of printed matter, notes and memoranda. Bertha Mohr was the daughter of Robert Moritz Mohr, a pipe organ maker whose family lived in Greenwich Village, New York City. The Bertha Mohr diary records her domestic and social activities of 1892, including household chores, entertainments and educational events, and visits made and received. Among the events Mohr recorded was New York City's commemoration of the 400th anniversary of Columbus' arrival in America. The diary entries are short, most consisting of no more than four or five brief sentences. The diary also holds a few small clippings. less

John D. (John Daniel) Crimmins (1844-1917) was the leading partner of a major New York City construction contracting firm, from which he retired in 1897. He was a prominent philanthropist and supporter of Irish-American and Roman Catholic institutions. In 1868 he married Lily Louise Lalor (d. 1888); ten children survived them.The John D. Crimmins diary documents his business and social affairs in New York City, and family life at Firwood, his estate on Long Neck Point near Noroton and Darien, Connecticut. Diary entries, in a printed journal for the year 1894, span 1897 April 19-August 27 and October 1-2. They are written in four distinct hands, including a poem copied by Crimmins's daughter Mercedes for his birthday on May 18, and tasks for construction jobs noted on pages printed for 1894 September 13 and 14. Entries concern important dinners and events attended, with prominent guests such as former President Grover Cleveland, Mayor Patrick Gleason of Long Island City, Archbishop Michael A. Corrigan, and Judge Charles P. Daly; his presidency of the Second Avenue Railroad Company; his philanthropic activities; and a few construction matters. There is more extensive coverage of family events, the renovation of Firwood and its decoration, and the payment of servants and employees. John Dod Ward (1795-1873) was an American marine engineer who lived and worked in New Jersey, Vermont, New York, and Montreal. His son, Charles Dod Ward (1838-1915), was a civil engineer who married Ada Davey, daughter of Henry Lewis Davis and Jane Moore Sprong of Oswego, New York. The John Dod Ward family papers date from 1800 to 1936 and document the activities and lineage of the Ward, Roburds, Davis, and Sprong families through correspondence, business papers, diaries, photographs, and genealogical research files. The volume contains a "sick list" for June 27-July 2, 1850; accounts against persons for medicine and attendance; personal addresses; accounts of provisions purchased from July 2-15, 1850; a diary kept onboard the "California Packet" from San Francisco en route home via Panama from November 9-December 1, 1850, in which Locke mentions the loss of his possessions by fire before he sailed, his illness, and that of many passengers (some of whom had been ill for six and nine months), grumbling about food, drunken officers of the ship, and other matters. Samuel Thompson (1738-1811) was a farmer and physician of Setauket, Long Island, New York. Collection consists of Thompson's diaries with transcripts and some family papers. Diaries, 1800-1808, chronicle events in the life of Thompson's family and neighbors in Brookhaven Township and Suffolk County. Family papers, 1710-1858, include wills, bills of sale for slaves and indentures for servants, land deeds, estate inventories, and letters. Volume 4, Marvyn Scudder scrapbook, is a journal and scrapbook with entries by members of several generations of the family of Moses L. Scudder (1843-1917), railroad president and financier of Halesite, Huntington, recording family matters and social activities, with particular reference to the upbringing of Marvyn and Philip Johnston ("Jack") Scudder. The collection contains original Sharpe family correspondence, dating from 1895 to 1934, as well as copies of letters to and from Rosa Stevens' grandfather, Pennsylvania coal industry pioneer Richard Sharpe, 1856-1894, which discuss the illness and death of his daughter Emily, his coal business, arrangements for his son to attend the school of Rev. Dr. Lyons of West Haverford, PA, and other personal and business matters. Family correspondence of 1907 contains preliminary discussions with sculptor Frank Edwin Elwell regarding the commission of a sculpture honoring one of the family's revolutionary war ancestors. Also present is an 1898 diary of Rosa's aunt Elizabeth Montgomery Sharpe and a letter she received from Jane Addams in 1895. Stevens family correspondence, 1898-1951, is chiefly addressed to Rosa Stevens or "Cousin Mary." Of note are copies of three letter of Charles J.
