Isaac Pendleton Langworthy (1806-1888) was a Congregational clergyman in Chelsea, Massachusetts. In addition to serving as a minister, he was corresponding secretary of the American Congregational Union and a member of the American Congregational Association of Boston. Collection consists of papers of Isaac Langworthy, his wife Sarah Williams Langworthy, their son Frank, and various other family members. Papers of Isaac P. Langworthy include his personal creed, letters he received, accounts, sermons, notebooks, and miscellaneous materials. Sarah Langworthy's papers contain letters and notebooks. Also, correspondence, 1869 diary and papers of Frank Langworthy; and certificates and records of or about other family members.

Biographical/historical information

Issac P. Langworthy, 1806-1888, was a Congregational clergyman active for most of his life in Chelsea, Massachusetts. He was born in North Stonington, Connecticut and was educated at Phillips Academy, Harvard Medical School and Yale University. After his ordination in 1841 he worked as a minister in a Chelsea Congregational church, a corresponding secretary of the American Congregational Union and a member of the American Congregational Association of Boston, Mass. He was married to Sarah Williams Langworthy, the daughter of Cyrus Williams, and the father of several children, including Frank Langworthy. An honorary degree, Doctor of Divinity was conferred upon Issac Langworthy by Grinnell in 1878, ten years before his death. He was a life member of both the American Home Missionary Society and the American Bible Society.

Scope and arrangement

These papers include the personal creed of Issac P. Langworthy, letters received by I. P. Langworthy, accounts, sermons, notebooks and miscellaneous papers of Issac Langworthy, circa 1829-1889; letters and notebooks of his wife, Sarah Williams Langworthy, circa 1831-1884: and correspondence, 1869; diary and papers of their son, Frank Langworthy, a physician circa 1869-1884. Some miscellaneous certificates and other papers of family members or about family members Antoinette, James and Cyrus Langworthy comprise the balance of the Langworthy papers.
