Anthony Jerome Griffin (1866-1935) was a lawyer and U.S. Representative from the Bronx, New York City. He served in the Spanish-American War, 1898-1899; practiced law in the Bronx; was founder and editor of the Bronx Independent; and served four terms as New York State Senator from 1911 to 1915. He also was an inventor and amateur author. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, legal and military records, political and personal papers, memorabilia, and printed matter relating to Griffin's military and political career. Correspondence, 1885-1935, is largely related to his political activities; the remainder pertains to his legislative concerns, immigration matters for his constituents, as well as some personal correspondence. Legal papers, 1885-1930, include case files, estate files and title abstracts. His writings consist of manuscript and typescript versions and galley proofs of poems, plays and stories. Diaries, 1886-1930, and notes and notebooks, 1883-1934, contain his observations on many professional and personal activities in addition to subject files. Military and patent records concern his military service and endeavors in submarine safety. Political papers are a combination of printed matter, notes and memoranda. Financial records are his accounts from 1887 to 1934. Philburn (Phil) Friedman (1921-1988) was an American stage manager. Friedman managed numerous Broadway and West Coast theater productions, many of them musicals, including Kismet (1953), How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1961), Pippin (1972), Chicago (1975), and Dancin' (1978). He worked with director, writer, and choreographer Bob Fosse for nearly 15 years, and played the part of the stage manager in Fosse's 1979 autobiographical film, All That Jazz. He also worked extensively with directors Cy Feuer and Abe Burrows. The Phil Friedman papers (1805-1979) document Friedman's general interest in theater and to some extent, his work as a stage manager. Howard Kyle (1861-1950) was an American stage and radio actor who was active from the 1880s to the 1930s. He served as secretary of the Actors' Equity Association from 1913 until 1919, when he resigned from the organization and joined the Actors' Fidelity League. As a member of the Players, he worked to have an Edwin Booth memorial sculpture erected in Gramercy Park. The Howard Kyle papers date from the 1870s to 1954 and contain correspondence, photographs, theater programs, event programs, clippings, and other documents concerning his professional and personal life. The collection contains materials related to his work with Actors' Equity, the Actors' Fidelity League, the Players, and other theater organizations. The collection also contains materials concerning productions he was involved with, including the Howard Kyle Players production of Nathan the Wise (1912) and performances by the Century Theatre Club. The majority of the photographs are of Kyle or his wife, actor Amy Urcilla Hodges. There are also unidentified photographs and photographs of fellow performers, including singer Rosa Ponselle. Some of the photographs are inscribed to Amy Hodges. The collection also contains an unidentified one-act script and a eulogy for actor Henry Miller. E. B. Marks (1865-1945) was an American music publisher who founded the Edward B. Marks Music Company. The E. B. Marks collection of photographs and ephemera consist of clippings, publications, photographs, programs, promotional material, and other materials. Most of the clippings and publications date from about the 1930s to the 1940s and concern television and radio broadcasting, music, and film. There are programs from the first annual conference of the Television Broadcasters Association in 1944. Clippings concern the early development of television, film advertising, and individual musicians, among other topics. There are also clippings on theater from about the 1910s to the 1920s, and one folder of clippings on the evangelist Billy Sunday, dating to the 1910s. The collection contains programs for performances and lectures, which date from 1875 to 1911 and come from American theaters. The photographs in the collection are mostly of performers. There are a large number of photographs of vaudeville minstrel Eddie Leonard, as well as caricatures of Leonard, and a photograph of his wife, Mabel Russell. The collection contains one photograph identified as E. B. Marks. The collection includes several play scenarios, script excerpts, and song lyrics, including two scenarios in French by Charles Méré. The collection also contains a booklet produced by NBC's Radio-Recording Division, called "Family Album" and showing photographs of the division's employees; brochures and posters for "Lest We Forget," an educational radio series about American history and government created by the Institute of Oral and Visual Education; and a pedigree for a Jersey bull, Gold Dust the Fourth, dated 1882. less

Leona Stephens (born circa 1885) and her husband Len D. Hollister (1884-1936) were writers and actors who worked on the Broadway stage and in vaudeville in the early 20th century. Following Hollister's death, Stephens continued performing and publishing songs through the 1940s. The Leona Stephens papers date from 1878 to 1952 and contain photographs, programs, song lyrics, and sheet music that document the entirety of Stephens's career, as well as her vaudeville act with Hollister. Ewald Schindler (1891-1948) was a German-born actor, director, and producer of theatre and opera. After fleeing to Czechoslovakia and Italy during the rise of the Nazis, he immigrated to the United States in 1941, where he became director of the King-Smith Playhouse in Washington, D.C. and founded The Playhouse Studio, a school of drama, with Norwegian dancer Liljan Espenak. Additions to the Ewald Schindler papers date from 1899 to 1947 and contain letters, photographs, scrapbook pages, and personal ephemera that document Schindler's family and professional life. Scrapbook pages with clippings, photographs, and a program document Schindler's direction of The Green Cockatoo at the King-Smith Playhouse, dated 1942 to 1943. Correspondence is with Kurt Schindler, Liljan Espenak, and Mary Wigman, discussing family and professional issues. Photographs include individual portraits of the Schindler family as well as a cabinet card depicting Czech opera singer Emmy Destinn. The Tilden and Hazard family scrapbooks were assembled by Laura Pelton Hazard. Hazard was granddaughter of Samuel J. Tilden's sister Mary B. Tilden. Laura Pelton married William Ayrault Hazard in 1885; the couple had six children. This collection contains photographs, clippings, letters, programs, and other ephemera and memorabilia related to the Tilden family and the Hazard family. The majority of the materials concern Laura and William Hazard and their children, including photographs that show the family at their home Meadow Hall in Cedarhurst, Long Island, as well as on vacation in various locations. Other material relates to family ancestry, Cedarhurst society, and William Hazard’s polo career. Materials related to Samuel J. Sarah Yardley Beers (1876-1946) was the great-niece of abolitionist James Miller McKim (1810-1874) and his wife Sarah A. McKim (1813-1891). Born in North Carolina, Sarah McKim Yardley was the daughter of Ellen Mulvany (1843-1924) of Millersville, Pennsylvania and William Buckman Yardley (1848-1885) of Pennsylvania and Delaware. Her mother married Edwin Ruthven Armstrong in 1886. In 1904 Sarah McKim Yardley married businessman Louis Gilbert Beers (1862-1935). Sarah Yardley Beers, as she was known, was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and an officer of the Broad Seal Chapter of Trenton, New Jersey. The Sarah Yardley Beers family papers, 1807-1983, comprise her genealogical correspondence and research papers relating to her maternal ancestry, particularly the McKim, Miller and Mulvany families of Pennsylvania; her mother's school autograph album and photograph album; family photographs and certificates; clippings and ephemera; and a Bible containing Miller family data and her parents' wedding certificate.
