Scope and arrangement
The Burling Family Genealogical research files consist primarily of notes and secondary source material compiled by genealogist Jane Thompson-Stahr while writing The Burling Books. The research traces the ancestors and descendants of Edward and Grace Burling, Quakers who arrived in New York in 1680.
The research notes created and compiled by Thompson trace the family from Essex, England to New York City, and from there across the continent. The bulk of the notes focus on family in New York State, though large branches were traced to Wisconsin and Mississippi. Burling surname files include census notes, graveyard records, research on a family-owned furniture business, location-specific files and an alphabetical run of individual files by first name. There are also copies of photographs and illustrations. Related surnames are alphabetized by surname line.
Additionally, the collection holds a photograph album attributed to a Grace Burling, with photographs (circa 1870-1899) of Burling family members and friends. There is also a family bible with entries beginning in 1777. The bible is accompanied by additional family pages which may have originated in another bible.
