Dorothy Fields, lyricist and librettist, was born in Allenhurst, New Jersey, July 15, 1905. She was the daughter of Lew Fields, comedian and producer, and Rose (Harris) Shoenfeld. Her first well known song was "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," which she wrote with James McHugh in 1928. She collaborated extensively with her brother Herbert Fields, who also was a librettist. Their most famous production was "Annie Get Your Gun," produced in 1946. Her other brother Joseph Fields was a dramatic actor, producer, and playwright. She was married in 1938 to Eli Lahm and they had two children, David and Eliza. She also collaborated with: Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, Sigmund Romberg, Burton Lane, Arthur Schwartz, Fritz Kreisler, Morton Gould, Cy Coleman, Albert Hague, Oscar Levant, Harry Warren, and her son David Fields Lahm. Dorothy Fields is probably best known for having written the lyrics to "Sweet Charity." She was a representative of the Dramatists' Guild on the Council of the Authors' League of America, secretary of the Dramatists' Guild, and one of the few women members of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. She died in 1974 in New York City. The Dorothy Fields papers consist of lyrics, including drafts of unpublished lyrics; scripts, including working outlines and drafts of scripts never produced; newspaper clippings, photographs, correspondence, programs, ephemera, and other material related to the career of Dorothy Fields,her father and two brothers. The collection reveals her creative processes for developing lyrics and librettos. Another strength of the collection is that it contains an extensive clipping file on the career of Mrs. Fields's father Lew Fields. Correspondence, however, is limited--there are only eight letters. less

Maria Astrova, also known as Marie or Masha Solomonik, was an actress who studied with Stanislavki, toured Europe, then came to New York in 1940, where she and her husband Alexandre Solomonik were central figures in the Theatre of Russian Drama, a troupe which performed in Russian. During her time with the Moscow Art Theatre in the 1920s, Maria Astrova toured Europe as a member of the Prague Troupe. She left in 1930 to settle in Paris, and married Alexandre Solomonik there the following year. She continued acting with a troupe in Paris until she and her husband moved to Brussels. As the war approached, the couple moved to London, then emigrated to the United States in 1940. During the 1940s Maria Astrova and her husband staged Russian drama in New York, Astrova as an actress and Alexander Solomonik as producer and chief financial backer of the Theatre of Russian Drama. The Maria Astrova papers consist primarily of newspaper clippings from Russian language newspapers of the 1940s and 1950s, mostly Russky Golos as well as the Novoye Russkoye Slovo, in which the productions and activities of the Theatre of Russian Drama are described. In addition to the newspaper clippings, there are two programs from performances of works by Gogol, MARRIAGE (1944) and THE INSPECTOR GENERAL (1949), featuring Maria Astrova. Aside from one 1970 clipping, all other news material dates from between 1941 and 1952. There is one brief letter in Russian, dated 1952, from Vladimir Zelitsky, director of the Theatre of Russian Drama. There is a booklet dated 1946 with text in Russian and a number of pictures of dancers. There is also a watercolor of three costume designs, with two swatches of fabric attached. less

Max Liebman was one of the leading pioneers in producing, directing, and writing several highly credited television productions in the 1950s. Growing up in New York, he attended the Boys High School in Brooklyn, and got his start in entertainment, performing and writing in vaudeville. He was the producer and director of the Tamiment Theatrical Workshop in the Poconos, a summer stock playhouse, and brought the company's show to Broadway as The Straw Hat Revue in 1939. Liebman was a co-writer for Danny Kaye for several years, and was also credited as a writer for the 1945 movie-musical Ziegfeld Follies. Max Liebman Productions was incorporated in the State of New York in 1948, and in 1949 Liebman made his debut as a television producer with the production of the Admiral Broadway Revue. Liebman also launched Your Show of Shows his most celebrated and critically acclaimed television production that same year, which he produced and directed from 1949 to 1954. The show was broadcast from the International Theatre in New York City and starred Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca.
