Rossiter Johnson (1840-1931) was an American author and editor. In addition to editing historical and reference works, he wrote biographies, histories and poetry. He and his first wife, Helen Kendrick Johnson (1844-1914), were ardent anti-feminists who belonged to various organizations opposed to women's suffrage. Helen Johnson was also an author and editor. Collection contains the Johnson's correspondence, accounts, writings, notes, photographs, and printed matter. In addition to his editorial career, he wrote biographies and articles for magazines. Collection consists of correspondence and typescripts by Seitz. De Coursey Fales (1888-1966) was a New York City lawyer and banker who collected books and manuscripts. He donated his book collection to New York University and split his manuscript gifts between N.Y.U. and the New York Public Library. Collection consists mainly of 18th-20th century autographs, with the bulk from the mid-19th to 20th centuries, representing both primary and secondary figures from diverse fields including literature, music, education, politics, and royalty. Names include Susan B. Anthony, John Bigelow, Edwin Booth, Frederick Douglass, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, H.L. Mencken, Franklin Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Margaret Sanger, Philip Schuyler, and Daniel Webster. Figures represented are mainly Americans. Many letters are to Anthony.
