The Orvil Dryfoos papers document Dryfoos's daily activities and the operations of The Times, particularly during his tenure as vice president, president, and publisher from 1954 to 1963. The collection also contains Dryfoos's private business papers and records concerning the Dryfoos family's finances, travels, and other personal matters. less

Anthony Jerome Griffin (1866-1935) was a lawyer and U.S. Representative from the Bronx, New York City. He served in the Spanish-American War, 1898-1899; practiced law in the Bronx; was founder and editor of the Bronx Independent; and served four terms as New York State Senator from 1911 to 1915. He also was an inventor and amateur author. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, legal and military records, political and personal papers, memorabilia, and printed matter relating to Griffin's military and political career. Correspondence, 1885-1935, is largely related to his political activities; the remainder pertains to his legislative concerns, immigration matters for his constituents, as well as some personal correspondence. Legal papers, 1885-1930, include case files, estate files and title abstracts. His writings consist of manuscript and typescript versions and galley proofs of poems, plays and stories. Diaries, 1886-1930, and notes and notebooks, 1883-1934, contain his observations on many professional and personal activities in addition to subject files. Military and patent records concern his military service and endeavors in submarine safety. Political papers are a combination of printed matter, notes and memoranda. Financial records are his accounts from 1887 to 1934. Also, personal memorabilia; graphic materials including photographs, original paintings and maps; and printed matter such as reprints, government manuals and clippings. less

David Hunter McAlpin (1816-1901) was a tobacco manufacturer and philanthropist. In addition to owning the tobacco firm, D.H. McAlpin Company, he also made substantial investments in real estate including the McAlpin Hotel in New York City and was a director of several banks and insurance and energy companies. Collection consists of McAlpin's estate papers, correspondence, scrapbooks of clippings, and photographs. Estate papers, 1871-1930, are the legal and financial documents executed by McAlpin's heirs and include legal papers; accounts; cash books, 1901-1927; journals, 1901-1927; and ledgers, 1901-1923. Remaining papers consist of letters, 1871-1894; estate letters, 1901-1930; letterbook, 1925; scrapbooks of newspaper clippings about McAlpin; and photographs, mainly of the construction site of the McAlpin Hotel. less

The American Fund for Public Service, also known as the Garland Fund, was created in 1922 by Charles Garland to support radical social and economic causes. The board of directors included prominent leaders of the labor movement, the Socialist and Communist parties, and civil rights and minority groups. From 1922 to 1941 the Fund gave nearly two million dollars to a variety of left-wing organizations and enterprises, such as labor unions, cooperatives, schools for workers, radical publications, bail and legal defense funds, and civil liberties, penal reform, and minority rights groups. Records of the American Fund include internal and external correspondence of members of the board of directors, treasurer, and legal counsel, 1922-1941; board of directors meeting minutes, 1922-1941; several committee reports and surveys, 1923-1939; memoranda and reports on policy, 1922-1932; auditor's reports, 1922-1941; lists of appropriations and loans, 1922-1941; and application files for each individual or organization requesting assistance. Grant and loan application files account for 70% of the collection and contain the correspondence of the applicant with the Fund and often a variety of supporting materials such as reports, memoranda, publications, financial records, leaflets, as well as comments by Fund officials regarding the application. United China Relief was founded in 1941 in New York City for the purpose of raising funds to aid the Chinese people during times of national crisis. The main function of United China Relief was to provide funds for the relief and rehabilitation of the Chinese people. Ancillary goals were to serve as a medium for informing Americans on events and conditions in China, and to help to reassure the Chinese people of continued American concern and friendship. less

Nikola Tesla was a Serbian-American inventor and electrical engineer. The collection consists of brief letters, three to Stanford White (1901) touching on the construction of Tesla’s transmission tower and building (known as Wardenclyffe); three to Benjamin F. Miessner (1915) concerning Miessner’s forthcoming book on radio dynamics and Tesla’s own work developing remote-controlled and self-propelled devices; and two thank-you letters. Papers chiefly concern the publication of George Bernard Shaw's "The War Indemnities" by the American Mercury. The story had originally been submitted to Pearson's Magazine, but was discarded after the departure of editor Frank Harris. Correspondence is largely between Shaw or his representatives and American author and editor George S. Hellman. The collection contains two typescript drafts of the story emended by Shaw, one typescript copy emended by Hellman, and an annotated author's proof from the American Mercury. Also included are an unrelated clippings, a photograph of Shaw, and a postcard from Shaw to Savoy Theater managers Harley Granville-Barker and J. E. Vedrenne. less

The collection consists of radio scripts for Good Health and How to Keep It, 1936, a program by Dr. Shirley W. Wynne on radio station WMCA in New York City. The show was sponsored by Loft, Inc., candy manufacturers. The scripts typically comprise the announcer's introduction, a talk by Wynne on health topics for the benefit of children and adults, a question-and-answer period with audience members or correspondents, and conclusion. The radio scripts are numbered 47-65 (there are two scripts numbered 65), dating from September 5 to October 20, 1936. less
