Minutes of meetings concerning New York City charities attended by justices, aldermen, church wardens, and vestrymen (1694-1747). The meeting attendees were charged with the care of the poor, the administration of the Alms House (1736-1747), the appointment of the schoolmaster, and related civic duties. These papers document attendance and proceedings to these meetings. This volume is a 19th century transcription. less

Edward Battin, an employee of the British Navy, created this volume ca. 1685, dedicating it to an Earl, a Lord, a Lieutenant, a Governor, a Constable, and other prominent British individuals. The volume contains detailed instructions for the construction of ships of war, as well as information about cost and management issues related to the maintenance of a naval fleet, officers, and crew. The volume contains sections on the proportions of ships, their loaded weight, dimensions, ropes and rigging, and other physical aspects; a list of British naval ships which includes when, where, and by whom they were constructed, their dimensions and cost; the expenses related to furnishing ordnance; wages paid to officers and seamen, and the amount of food and drink (bread, beer, beef, pork, peas, fish, butter, and cheese) allocated to them according to class; the cost of maintaining ships both at sea and in harbor; and many other details less

William Salmon (1684-1759) of Southold, Long Island, was a grandson of William Salmon (b. 1610) who emigrated from England to Southold in 1635. The collection includes the original manuscript (1 v.) known and published as the Salmon Records, a private register of marriages and deaths, 1696-1815, of residents and persons associated with the town of Southold, Suffolk County, New York, as well as a separate manuscript index (1 v.) compiled by Joseph H. Petty in 1860. The register was started by William Salmon (1684-1759) of Southold, and continued by members of the Salmon family. The volume contains what appear to be two separate registers, later bound together and re-paginated in red ink as one. The first, a register of deaths with a few marriages, spans 1696-1815; the second, of marriages, spans [1702]-1811. The manuscript index compiled by Joseph H. Petty in 1860 conforms to the re-pagination. less

Samuel Gardner Drake (1798-1875) was an American historian, antiquarian, genealogist, and bookseller. He wrote about New England history, Indians and witchcraft. Collection consists of Drake's manuscript transcripts of documents, 1633-1792, relating to Indians, particularly Indians of New England. The Sands family of Block Island, Rhode Island, trace their lineage to James Sands, born in 1622 in Staffordshire, England. The collection consists of a genealogical research and personal papers relating to the Sands family. Personal papers include wills, deeds, indentures, and other documents dating from the 17th to 19th centuries. Genealogical research materials comprise one volume of photographs and other images depicting descendants of James Sands of Block Island, as well as notes on the Walker, Hutchinson, Ray, Guthrie, Palgrave, Cornell, Ayscough, Middagh, Holt, and Hershaw families; one volume of genealogies compiled by Malcolm Sands Wilson; and a small quantity of research notes and correspondence less

Papers consist of two volumes of collected original deeds, indentures, leases, wills, and miscellaneous correspondence of the Scudder family of Huntington, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, and a family journal and scrapbook in one volume. Volume 3 contains correspondence with Marvyn Scudder and others concerning the death in action of Jack Scudder in France during World War I. Volume 4, Marvyn Scudder scrapbook, is a journal and scrapbook with entries by members of several generations of the family of Moses L. Scudder (1843-1917), railroad president and financier of Halesite, Huntington, recording family matters and social activities, with particular reference to the upbringing of Marvyn and Philip Johnston ("Jack") Scudder. The volume, including numerous photographs of family members and their activities, also served as a guestbook for friends and family visiting the estate. less

Negative photostats and typed transcripts of records from the Amsterdam Lutheran Church archives relating to Lutheranism in New Netherlands. The records consist of minutes of the Consistory at Amsterdam, correspondence between the Consistory and Lutherans in New York, and petitions of Lutheran leaders to the Consistory and to the directors of the Dutch West India Company. Accompanying the transcripts is a typescript, "The Lutheran Church in New York, 1649-1772: Records in the Lutheran Church Archives at Amsterdam, Holland." The typescript is an English translation of the records by Arnold J.H. van Laer, with an introduction by Harry J. Kreider, Chairman of the Committee on Documentary History of the United Lutheran Synod of New York. less
