Eleven of the thirteen recordings in the collection were made by Williams in 1948 at a New Orleans carnival booth facility. These recordings primarily feature Williams reading his poems, including selections from In the Winter of Cities. Williams also participates in apparently impromptu comic sketches with friends. less

Ross Lee Finney (1906-1997) was an American composer and teacher. Born in Wells, MN, he studied at the University of Minnesota with Donald Ferguson, in Paris with Nadia Boulanger,and at Harvard with Edward Burlingame Hill. He also studied with Roger Sessions (1935), Alban Berg (1931-1932), and Gian Francesco Malipiero (1937). Finney taught at Smith College (1929-49) ; Mt. Holyoke College (1938-40) ; Hartt School of Music (1941-42), and Amherst College (1946-1947). He was a visiting lecturer at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (1948-1949), and later became a professor there (1949-73). During his time at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Finney served as chairman of the composition department, and established an electronic music laboratory. less

Frederick Jacobi (1891-1952) was an American composer, conductor, and educator active in the early twentieth century. He was assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera (1913-1917), and taught composition at the Juilliard School of Music (1936-1950). The bulk of the collection contains private recordings made for the composer, of his own works. less

The Bryant Park Concerts of Recorded Music were free public programs featuring orchestral, vocal, and instrumental selections from the record library held by the New York Public Library's Music Division which became the Rodgers and Hammerstein Archives of Recorded Sound. The collection contains concert programs, announcements, articles, correspondence, and photographs dating from 1948-1968. less

Henry Sylvern was a Russian-born composer, pianist, and bandleader best known for his work in the United States on radio programs and advertisements. Among the shows that Sylvern worked on were the Du Pont Show of the Week, the Arthur Godfrey Show, Suspense, This is Show Business, and The Man Against Crime. He wrote and performed the music for many advertisements, most notably the Pepsi Cola jingle "Be sociable.". The collection contains a wide variety of Sylvern's work in all areas. Included are selections of his advertisements for such products as Pepsi Cola, Capitol Airlines, Welch's refreshment wine, Fab detergent, and Camel cigarettes. The studio recordings consist of performances by Sylvern and his orchestra of popular songs composed by Sylvern and others. The radio programs contain samples of his work on a number of shows, including the MGM Screen test (for which he acted as musical director), Hank Sylvern Presents, This is Show Business, and Suspense. less

Gilbert W. Chapman was a business executive in New York City who served as Director of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of The New York Public Library. The collection consists of noncommercial sound recordings including performances by Jascha Heifetz and Larry Adler of popular chamber music; a performance of Aaron Avshalomoff's Symphony no. 2 by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra conducted by Thor Johnson; a speech by Mrs. Gilbert Chapman broadcast in 1943 promoting the American Women's Voluntary Services; and radio and television interviews with Gilbert W. Chapman and dancer Alexandra Danilova. The interviews with Chapman were recorded from 1956 to 1962 and concern literacy and education in the United States. Notable television and radio programs represented in the collection include the Tex and Jinx television program; a Monitor radio program; and a Lee Graham television interview. Also included is the opening address (given by Mr. Chapman) of the New York Public Library 50th anniversary convocation, and a radio program featuring a story about the WNYC book festival. less

The Gena Branscombe collection contains noncommercial recordings primarily of radio broadcasts made by the Branscombe Choral from 1935-1954, and of works by Gena Branscombe performed by other choral groups, soloists, and instrumentalists. Among the Branscombe Choral broadcasts are a number of works by American composers, including many of Branscombe's own choral arrangements and compositions, many of them first radio performances. less

The Collegiate Chorale was named after the space in which it held its first rehearsals: the Marble Collegiate Church. It was founded in 1941 by Robert Shaw, and has since had performances with many notable conductors including Toscanini, Beecham, Bernstein, Koussevitzky, Maazel, Mehta, and Mitropoulos. The collection consists of recordings of Collegiate Chorale concerts between 1944 and 1974 (with the bulk in the 50s and 60s). All recordings have been individually cataloged. Yaddo is an artists' colony and music festival in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The collection primarily contains recordings of concerts and rehearsals from the 1937, 1938, and 1940 Festivals. Also included are private recordings of Otto Luening doing comic impressions of various figures in the music field. less

Ruth Rubin was a folkorist and a noted performer of Yiddish folksong. Her performances in New York included recitals at Carnegie Hall and at Town Hall. She was born in Montreal in 1906. These noncommercial recordings were collected by Ruth Rubin and consist primarily of field recordings of Yiddish folksong and folklore that she made in New York City and Montreal. She classifies this material into children's songs, drinking songs, folklore, love songs, poverty songs, and other categories. The collection also contains many folksong performances by Rubin herself, radio programs featuring Yiddish folksong, as well as several of her lectures and interviews. less

These recordings, collected by Harrison W. Davis, offer a representative selection of addresses made by Franklin Delano Roosevelt during his presidency. The bulk of the collection consists of sixteen of the thirty-one "Fireside Chats" (four recordings are incomplete), and ten State of the Union addresses, dating from 1936 to 1945 (the address of January 6, 1945 is incomplete). In addition, the collection contains addresses to Congress delivered on May 16, 1940, on December 8, 1941, and on March 1, 1945, as well as speeches made at the 1940 and 1944 Democratic National Conventions. less

The story was eventually adapted into films, comic strips, multiple radio and television series, and commercial recordings. The collection consists primarily of audio recordings of Tarzan-related radio broadcasts, as well as of several television shows, films, and recordings. less

The collection consists primarily of recordings that Hayton recorded for various MGM Motion pictures including The Barkleys of Broadway, Harvey girls, On the town, the Pirate, Good news, Summer holiday, Til the clouds roll by, Words and music, Yolanda and the thief, the Ziegfeld follies of 1946, and Singin' in the rain. Vito Marcantonio was a New York politician active from the early 1930's up to his death in 1954. He was a congressman for the 18th New York District from 1935 to 1937 and from 1939-1951. He ran unsuccessfully for mayor of New York City in 1949. He was a member of the American Labor Party. The sound recordings date from 1938 to 1952. Several selections consist of political advertisements for the 1949 mayoral campaign. Other selections include a 1951 press conference with an assistant to Marcantonio, Clifford T. McAvoy, who was running for City Council; a political speech given by Marcantonio in 1938 to the Harlem Legislative Committee; a 1943 speech on the downfall of Mussolini; and a 1952 speech given to the American Labor Party. less

Listeners would write to the studio with ideas for skits, and the actors on the show would perform those skits on the air. Skits were written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Lee. Each program features a different all-star cast. less

These tapes constitute a large portion of the noncommercial recordings collected by Flagstad of her own performances and interviews. Recordings originating from Norway include Flagstad's farewell concert of December 12, 1953, and fourteen tapes recorded privately at the Norwegian Broadcast Service in 1954 and 1958 featuring songs by Norwegian composers. less

Lanny Ross was a composer and singer of popular songs, known in particular for his performances on radio. He was born in Seattle, Washington, on Jan. 19, 1906. His career on radio began in 1928 and continued for more than thirty years. Collection consists of non-commercial recordings collected by Ross of his song performances on radio programs, and includes performances of songs that he composed. The most prominently represented programs in the collection are the Camel Caravan; (Franco-American presents) the Lanny Ross Show; and Lucky Strike Presents: Your Hit Parade. less

The Lawrence and Lee collection includes a broad sample of the material that this important team created for radio, television, and the stage. Included in the collection are complete holdings for The Railroad hour, Favorite story, and Young love, as well as representative holdings for Request performance, Hallmark playhouse, A Date with Judy, and numerous other programs. Holdings from their later activities include tapes of interviews with and lectures by one or both men, as well as private recordings that document the development of scripts and stories for Auntie Mame, Shangri-La, and The Gang's all here. less

Lennie Hayton was a jazz pianist, composer, conductor, and arranger active from the 1920's through the 1960's. Hayton worked on a number of radio programs, including Lucky Strike's Your Hit Parade (1935), and the Ed Wynn Show (1936). He was musical director of MGM from 1940 to 1953, and worked on many movies as an arranger, conductor, or musical director. Hayton married Lena Horne in 1947, and worked with her as a manager-pianist-arranger. The collection contains selections of Hayton's work on radio and in the studio, as well as recordings of Lena Horne and other performers. Recordings of his radio work include selected episodes of Lucky Strike Your Hit Parade, Ed Wynn Show, Chesterfield's Music that satisfies, and Ipana's Hour of Smiles programs. Included in the collection are recordings of Lena Horne on studio acetates, as well as live radio recordings. Also included in the collection are radio recordings of both popular and classical music performances that Hayton owned. less

The Mapleson Cylinders are a set of brown wax cylinder recordings of Metropolitan Opera rehearsals and performances, as well as home recordings of family members, that were recorded by Lionel Mapleson between 1901-1909 and acquired by the New York Public Library between 1939-1962. The cylinders were transferred to analog tape in 1981 and released as a five-LP set by New York Public Library in 1985. The Mapleson Cylinders research files collection includes correspondence among various previous owners of the cylinders, documentation of early attempts by the New York Public Library, the Library of Congress, and others, to reformat them prior to the 1985 LP set. Also included are research notes of the New York Public Library's audio engineer Tom Owen who transferred the cylinders, as well as notes of Rodgers and Hammerstein Archives of Recorded Sound Curator David Hall conducted in preparation of the liner notes for the 1985 release. less
