He wrote a number of stage plays and produced them with David Belasco from 1902 to 1914 before becoming one of the pioneers of the motion picture industry. He founded the drama department at the University of Southern California and taught there until 1953. Collection consists of manuscripts and typescripts of De Mille's writings. Writings include play scripts, scenarios, lectures, reminiscences of his career in the motion picture industry, and typescript of children's fairy tale he co-authored.

Archibald Batty (1887-1961) was a British actor and writer. He began acting in 1924, and was a member of the Aldwych Farces from 1928 to 1932. The Archibald Batty papers (1936-1959) contain his writings and correspondence. The bulk of the correspondence is letters to and from playwright and businessman H.M. Harwood. This correspondence dates from 1936 to 1937 and includes discussions of general business investments; buying and selling rights to plays; and Harwood's plays, including Transit in Venus and These Mortals. Batty's writings consist of play scripts, book manuscripts, and poems. Many of the writings have handwritten changes, and some are accompanied by related correspondence. The book manuscripts date to the 1950s and consist of unpublished typescripts about playwriting and amateur acting, as well as Batty's autobiography. The autobiography contains accounts of his childhood; his experiences living and working in Calcutta in the 1910s; his experiences as aide-de-camp to Harcourt Butler, Lieutenant Governor and later Governor of the United Provinces in British India; and his acting career, including his work with the Aldwych Farces and acting on the London stage. There are four play scripts: The Last of the Lamasery, Roger VI, The Tontine, and The Twelve-Pound Look. Poems date from 1941 to 1954. The collection also contains miscellaneous short letters and telegrams addressed to Batty, and a preliminary program and notes for a 1939 benefit for King George's Pension Fund for Actors and Actresses, which Batty helped organize.

Ellis was the managing director and owner of the Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope, Pennsylvania from 1954 to 1964, where he became known for his support of up-and-coming playwrights. The Michael Ellis letters date from 1950 to 1970 and contain letters received by Ellis from new playwrights seeking his assistance or advice in having their work staged. The content of the letters reveal the struggles experienced by unknown playwrights attempting to gain recognition in the theatre. Many letters date from Ellis's tenure at Bucks County Playhouse. Enclosures such as synopses, publicity sheets, and plot summaries are included, and the collection holds letters from multiple playwrights who maintained contact with Ellis following their initial query.

The records reflect the origin and activities of the New York Shakespeare Festival, its general administration, and the staging of its productions, including their creation, management, booking, and promotion. The files of the Casting Office, except in the form of carbon copies in other series, are not included in this archive. There are also gaps in the files of the Associate Producer. Contracts were removed and require special permission of the curator to access. Oral history materials in Series I and some correspondence in Series V are restricted until the year 2043 in order to protect the privacy of individual persons. Series XIV (Oversized Materials) is not fully processed and is currently unavailable for research.

He began his performing career as "The Rover Reciter" in local talent shows, on radio, and in local stock theatre companies. In 1929, he acted in small roles with the Theatre Guild, from whose auspices emerged the Group Theatre in 1931. Odets' first successful play was the one-act play
