The collection of Increase Matthews and John Matthews daybooks, 1801-1804, consists of two volumes (bound in one) recording transactions at Zanesville and Springfield, Ohio for sugar, coffee, tea, farm products, cloth, whiskey, gunpowder and lead, and general merchandise. Accounts for animal pelts and charges for cartage to and from Marietta, Ohio are also listed. less

David Stuart Dodge (1804- ) was a physician in Fairfield and Hartford, Connecticut from 1829 to 1846. By 1849 he was associated with Evans, Davis & Co., manufacturers and merchants of files, which became Davis, Evans & Dodge the following year (firm was also known as American File Works). Dodge operated its warehouse and retail outlet in New York City and he also served as president of a related firm, U.S. Car Spring Co. Collection contains financial records of Dodge's medical practice, household accounts and remembrances, 1849-1855, and business records of file and spring manufacturing companies with which he was associated. Medical practice records, 1829-1846, consist of ledger and day books. Bulk of business records, 1848-1862, concern file manufacuring company and include letterbooks, account books, day books, sales books, receipt books, ledgers, and other related materials. Business records also contain the financial records, 1850-1853, of the U.S. Car Spring Co. and some correspondence, 1853-1856. less

Benjamin Drake (1805-1871) was a physician in New York City in the early 19th century. After graduating from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, he continued his studies in Europe before returning to New York to establish a practice. Drake held offices with the Medical Society of the County of New York, the New York State Medical Society, and the New York Academy of Medicine. The correspondence consists of letters by and to Drake relating to his medical practice, politics, and other matters. Ten letters to Thomas Tillotson (d.1832), physician and politician, who twice served as New York State Secretary of State between 1801-1808. Nine are from kinsmen Robert R. Livingston, Edward Livingston, Brockholst Livingston, and John Armstrong, Jr. Letters are addressed to him at Albany and Rhinebeck, New York and largely pertain to state and national politics and government. Robert R. Livingston’s December 13, 1787 letter at New York touches broadly on Constitutional developments, international affairs, and family matters. The majority of the items concern the contested presidential election of 1800, tied between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr, and its aftermath. An 1812 letter from E. Jenkins describes Aaron Burr’s recent appearance as a lawyer in court at Albany. Two small letter fragments are also present. less
