Lillian D. Wald, a public health nurse and social worker on New York City's Lower East Side, was a pioneer in American social work and public health. She founded the Henry Street Settlement and the Visiting Nurse Service of New York in 1893 and was a crusader for liberal, social welfare and philanthropic causes including child welfare, civil liberties, immigration, unemployment and the peace movement during World War I. The collection consists of correspondence, speeches, articles and printed materials relating to Wald's involvement with various social initiatives. less

The National Youth Administration (NYA) was a government sponsored youth training and employment program from 1935 to 1943. The collection consists of images of primarily African American youths engaged in NYA activities including employment and training programs, meetings, and parades. The collection dates from 1935 to 1943 with the bulk of the images from 1942-1943 when the organization was placed under the War Manpower Commission. Other images include NYA's youth activities under the auspices of the Works Projects Administration (1935-1939) and the Federal Security Agency (1939-1942). Fiorello H. La Guardia (1882-1947) began his political career as deputy attorney of the state of New York in 1915. He was a representative in the U.S. Congress from 1917 to 1932 except for service in World War I and a term as president of New York's Board of Aldermen from 1919 to 1921. La Guardia ran for mayor of New York City in 1933 and served in that office for twelve years. He became director of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation program in 1945 after leaving the mayor's office. Papers document La Guardia's career as a congressman, president of the Board of Aldermen and three-term mayor of New York. The two largest portions of the collection are the congressional and mayoral correspondence files. Congressional correspondence, ca. 1918-1933, includes letters received and carbons of responses written either by La Guardia or by his secretary on his behalf, clippings, greeting cards, printed House bills, invitations, photographs, memoranda, notes, press releases, printed matter, and telegrams. Letters from constituents concern topics such as employment and naturalization and letters from citizens around the country relate to La Guardia's stand on issues before Congress, including social issues and prohibition. Mayoral correspondence files, 1933-1945, consist largely of correspondence with members of the public who wrote requesting help with education, employment, immigration, prison terms, and other problems; suggesting appointments for various city offices; and offering ideas, opinions and appreciation. Very little appears to document the daily operations of city business. Also included is a small group of press releases; typescript and printed speeches, articles, and other writings; printed matter; flight logbook, 1917-1919, kept by La Guardia on the Italian front; scrapbooks of clippings; and miscellaneous papers on a variety of topics (of note among these are photographs, printed matter and correspondence. less

Morris Robert Werner (1897-1981) was an American journalist and writer in the fields of history, biography and current events. He was a sales agent for chemical dyes in China and then became a foreign correspondent for a British newspaper and for the Paris edition of the New York Herald Tribune. His literary work included writing articles for various American periodicals, a biography of Fiorello H. La Guardia, and his autobiography. Collection consists of correspondence, writings of Werner, photographs, and printed matter. Bulk of the papers is correspondence, 1920-1981, with friends, family, colleagues, editors, and publishers. Most letters relate to Werner's literary contributions to various periodicals, his work as a foreign correspondent, and his books, especially his unpublished biography of La Guardia. Also included are historical manuscript letters collected by Werner. Writings contain typescripts, 1920-1966, of articles by Werner, of his biography of La Guardia, of his autobiography, of his diaries, 1920, 1935-1943, and of book reviews. Richard Ward Greene Welling (1858-1946), New York City lawyer and reformer, was founder of the National Self Government Committee and president of the George Junior Republic. He was active in political and municipal reform and belonged to many social and political organizations. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, scrapbooks, personal papers, photographs, and printed matter. Correspondence, ca. 1894-1941, relates to Welling's involvement with various social, political, cultural, and reform organizations. Writings include typescript of his autobiography, As the Twig is Bent; articles he wrote; and his diaries, 1883-1945. Scrapbooks, 1876-1946, contain materials covering a wide range of topics. Ralph Thompson (1904-1979) was an American author, teacher and editor. He was a book critic at the New York Times and a contributing editor at Time Magazine, wrote reference works and translations, and was editor of the Book-of-the-Month Club from 1951 until 1975. Collection contains correspondence, manuscripts, photographs, and printed matter relating to Thompson's work. Bulk of the correspondence consists of letters to Thompson mainly from authors and readers of his reviews while he was a book columnist at the New York Times. William Hodson (1891-1943) was a social welfare administrator in Minnesota and New York City. In Minnesota he was instrumental in establishing the laws that became Minnesota's children's code. He moved to New York City in 1922 and joined the Russell Sage Foundation, first as director of its Division of Child Welfare, then as director of its Dept. of Social Legislation. He was the executive director of the Welfare Council of New York City from 1924 to 1934 and was Commissioner of Welfare from 1934 to 1943. Hodson was also active in professional organizations, serving as president of the American Association of Social Workers and of the American Public Welfare Association. Collection consists of correspondence, addresses, articles, sound recordings, and other papers relating to Hodson's professional activities in the fields of social work, child welfare and social legislation. Materials document Hodson's work in Minneapolis and in New York City, including his work as Commissioner of Public Welfare in New York City during the administration of Fiorello H. La Guardia.
