Oral History files consist of transcripts of oral histories conducted with staff members from The New York Times, accompanying documents such as biographical articles, and a name and subject file. Morris Robert Werner (1897-1981) was an American journalist and writer in the fields of history, biography and current events. He was a sales agent for chemical dyes in China and then became a foreign correspondent for a British newspaper and for the Paris edition of the New York Herald Tribune. His literary work included writing articles for various American periodicals, a biography of Fiorello H. La Guardia, and his autobiography. Collection consists of correspondence, writings of Werner, photographs, and printed matter. Bulk of the papers is correspondence, 1920-1981, with friends, family, colleagues, editors, and publishers. Most letters relate to Werner's literary contributions to various periodicals, his work as a foreign correspondent, and his books, especially his unpublished biography of La Guardia. Also included are historical manuscript letters collected by Werner. Writings contain typescripts, 1920-1966, of articles by Werner, of his biography of La Guardia, of his autobiography, of his diaries, 1920, 1935-1943, and of book reviews. Photographs are of Werner and his family and friends. Printed matter includes clippings of articles and copies of magazines and journals containing articles by Werner. less

Papers consist of family and general correspondence, Bigelow's writings, biographical materials, papers of his first and second wives, and related materials. Family correspondence, 1864-1954, and general correspondence, 1880-1954, contain chiefly incoming letters, many from prominent figures in journalism, the arts, and politics, in both the United States and Great Britain, as well as figures from countries of special interest to Bigelow, especially Germany and Japan. Correspondents include associates and figures such as Henry Mills Alden, James Bryce, Roger Casement, Samuel Clemens, Geraldine Farrar, Henry George, Percy and Ella Grainger, Edgar Lee Masters, Frederic Remington, George S. Viereck, and Israel Zangwill. Bigelow's writings cover a wide range of interests with travel observations, politics, and colonial studies being most prominent and consist of drafts, manuscripts and printed copies of his writings in addition to journals, notes, sketches, photographs, maps, printed matter, and clippings. Materials collected about Germany include correspondence with Emperor Wilhelm II, members of his family, and government officials, 1881-1945, and a journal of Bigelow's trip to Constantinople with the Emperor in 1899. Also contains an unpublished biography of his father, John Bigelow. ACME Newspictures was a New York City-based photographic news service. It was founded as United Features by E. W. Scripps in 1922, and merged with United Press in 1952. The photograph collection, dating from approximately 1930 to 1933, mainly depicts buildings in Washington, DC and New York City as well as Niagara Falls. less

De Coursey Fales (1888-1966) was a New York City lawyer and banker who collected books and manuscripts. He donated his book collection to New York University and split his manuscript gifts between N.Y.U. and the New York Public Library. Autograph collection consists primarily of letters, some holograph manuscripts, and a few signed graphics. Individuals represented are literary figures, artists, journalists, religious leaders, politicians, and theatre people. Also, documents, 1818-1848, from Albany, N.Y. concerning official activities; and additional papers of English and American authors. less
