Scope and arrangement
The ACME Newspictures small photograph collection, dating from around 1930 to 1933, contains black-and-white prints and picture postcards of bridges, high-rise buildings, and rivers in and around New York City, and government buildings and monuments in Washington, DC. The collection also features a few prints of Niagara Falls.
Prints by ACME Newspictures of the Empire State Building, the RCA Building, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, and New York Harbor compose the bulk of the collection. Photographs of the Chrysler Building, Riverside Church, Grand Central Station, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Williamsburg Bridge, Yankee Stadium, Central Park, the New York Stock Exchange, Madison Square Garden (MSG III, located on Eighth Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets), the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, the Statue of Liberty, and the George Washington Bridge are also present. Washington, DC and Niagara Falls prints are interfiled with New York City shots. The Washington, DC photographs include pictures of the Capitol Building, the Washington Monument, and the White House.
While most of the prints were created by ACME Newspictures, there are a small number of prints credited to Pacific & Atlantic Photos, Inc. (pre-merger with ACME Newspictures), ACME-Pacific & Atlantic Photos (title sometimes used during the merger), and the Canadian Pacific Railway.
Copyright and citation information are stamped on the back of the prints. The majority of prints also include a slip of paper affixed to one side, providing details on location, event, and date.
The three picture postcards by Unusual Photographs Reproduction Company hold images of the Woolworth Building and the Chanin Building in New York City, as well as a reproduction of an image from a scene from the 1930 movie Just Imagine.
