In the mid 1960s he assembled a collection of mainly French historical manuscripts. Collection contains approximately 10,000 manuscript letters, documents and printed ephemera collected by Grauer. Manuscripts cover a wide span of time and subject matter and are of minor figures in French literary, cultural, social, academic, governmental, and administrative life. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, materials related to inventions, and miscellaneous family papers. Correspondence includes letters Van Der Weyde received when he was a researcher and teacher of industrial science; family correspondence including letters from his son, an officer in the Union Army, 1861-1864; and correspondence concerning a colony founded in 1880 by the Brooklyn Co-operative Colonization Association in Washington Territory. Pierre Van Cortlandt, Jr. (1762-1848) was a soldier and politician from Westchester County, New York. He was a U.S. Congressman from 1811-1812 and a brigadier general in the Westchester militia during the War of 1812. His first wife, Catharine Clinton Taylor, was the daughter of George Clinton, governor of New York from 1777 to 1795 and 1801 to 1804, and vice-president under Jefferson and Madison, 1804-1812. Van Cortlandt was the son of Pierre Van Corlandt (1721-1814) who had been the first lieutenant-governor of New York. Collection consists mainly of letters received by Van Cortlandt.
