Scope and arrangement
The Richard Philp’s Dance Magazine Records document the years 1989-2000 while he was Editor-in-Chief. Dance Magazine has had a nearly 80-year run as the preeminent magazine about dance in the United States and the world.
The papers include the administrative and financial records of Dance Magazine. Also in the collection are materials about article proposals, writers, and subjects pertinent to dancers. The correspondence is of a professional nature. The materials that chronicle The Annual Dance Magazine Awards show the process from nomination through production of the event. The section about Richard Philp mainly concerns his travels throughout the world attending dance performances of the major companies both United States and International. There are no personal materials in the collection.
The Dance magazine records are arranged in eight series:

1969 - 1999
This series contains correspondence. The majority of the correspondence is between R. Philp and publishers, writers, dancers, educators, government officials, directors, and photographers. All of the correspondence is of a professional nature, and concern the running of the magazine. There is no personal correspondence in the series.

1981 - 1999
This series contains files related to the administrative work of Dance Magazine. It includes job descriptions, budgets, layouts, expenses, copyrights, indexes, surveys and schedules. There is also information about printing, invoices, resumes, reader profiles, staff directories, and subscription information.

1985 - 1999
This series contains copy-edited versions of articles that appeared in Dance Magazine. The group of articles from 1998-1999 are listed alphabetically. The group of articles from 1985-1987 are listed chronologically. The numbering system used at Dance Magazine to identify these articles was left intact. This numbering system uses a two digit month, a brief title and the two digit year, as an example: 08vienna86.

This series contain information about subjects suggested and/or used in special features and articles. There are proposals, copy-edited versions and background information.

1986 - 1998
This series contains information about writers for Dance Magazine. Some of the folders contain material previously written for other publications.

1955 - 1998
This series contains material about the Dance Magazine Awards. Included are the selection process, biographical information about the winners, and information about how the awards ceremony was produced. Also included are guest lists and invitations.

1977 - 1999
This series contains material about trips that R. Philp participated in as a representative of Dance Magazine. The material includes itineraries, tickets, maps, hotel and local travel, tourist places, and programs of events attended.

This series contains oversized material. There are oversized programs from events, oversized budgets and one poster.
