Phillip J. Young (born 1919) was a lifelong fan of Tallulah Bankhead (1902-1968), the film and stage actor. The collection, dated 1921 to 1968, consists of scrapbooks created by Young dedicated to the career of Bankhead. Two of the scrapbooks focus on other actors. The collection holds correspondence, newspaper clippings, and theater programs.

Biographical/historical information

Phillip J. Young (born 1919) was a lifelong fan of Tallulah Bankhead (1902-1968), the film and stage actor. Young would attend her movies and theater productions. The advent of World War II did not interrupt his devotion to Bankhead. In 1942, while stationed in South Carolina, Young managed to secure tickets to attend the opening performance of The Skin of Our Teeth on Broadway (letters September 28th and 30th, 1942, located in scrapbook 1942). Bankhead knew of Young and occasionally sent him autographed photographs. Young, to a much lesser extent, documented the careers of actors Helen Hays, Dorothy McGuire and Katherine Hepburn.

Scope and arrangement

The scrapbooks, dated 1921 to 1968, mostly document the career of Tallulah Bankhead (1902-1968). Young documented her career with newspaper clippings, photographs, and theater programs.

Most of the sixteen scrapbooks span several years. Some focus on a particular movie or play. Young ended his compilation of the scrapbooks after Bankhead's death in 1968. Two of the scrapbooks were devoted to the careers of Dorothy McGuire, Helen Hays, Katherine Hepburn, and other actors.
