The Kayton Sisters, Jean, Lillian (sometimes known as Babe), and occasionally a third sister, Cecyl, were dancers of the vaudeville era. They performed across the United States in the 1920s and then set up their own dancing school in the 1930s. The Kayton Sisters Studios, in Queens and the Bronx, continued into the 1950s. Collection consists of two scrapbooks of clippings, programs and a few photographs reflecting the careers of the Kayton sisters. There are also some loose programs for the annual revues at their studio and some unidentified photographs of their students that they received as gifts. less

Edward Gallardo (1949-2019) was an American writer, lyricist, and actor of Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Venezuelan descent born and raised in the Bronx, New York. Gallardo's best-known play, Simpson Street, was performed throughout the United States and toured in Spain, Puerto Rico, Columbia, and Mexico. Gallardo's papers date from 1910 to 2020 and chronicle mostly his work as an actor and writer through contracts, correspondence, notebooks, photographs, scrapbook albums, script drafts, and audio and video recordings. less

He wrote reviews for Backstage, New York Tribune, New York Theatre Review, East Village Other, and Wisdom's Child, and became the on-air theater critic for WNYC-TV. The Seymour Syna papers (1948-1983) document Syna's early career as a director of summer stock, regional, and school productions; and his later career as an educator and theater critic. Cartoonist, animator and writer Bert Green (nee Herbert), was born in England on Jan. 28, 1885. He came with his family to the United States as a young child, later studying art at Pratt Institute and Chase Art School. After working as a cartoonist for several newspapers, including The New York herald, The world, The New York American, The New York journal, and The Atlanta Georgian for ten years, in 1915 Green began to draw cartoons for motion pictures. He later turned to creating comic strips for newspapers and comic stories with illustrations, most notably, The love letters of an interior decorator, fictitious letters from a bootlegger to his fiancee (later published as a book), for Liberty magazine. During World War II, he served in the Navy, creating educational cartoons to explain complicated equipment. Green was married to Catherine Porter and had a son, Robert; after his first wife's death, he later married Evelyn Betts. He died Oct. 5, 1948 at the Bronx Veterans Administration Hospital after an extended illness. Original cartoons, comic strips, and drawings, mostly black and white, by Bert Green. Some of the pieces, such as Diana's diary, The Doyle Family and The love letters of an interior decorator (also published in book form by Frederick A. Stokes Co., 1929), were published in Liberty magazine during the 1920s and early 1930s. Also included are 2 sheets of cartoon panels for Kids is kids, possibly published in Humdinger (1947), as well as a 1941 comic strip of Susie, "from the Liberty serial of the same name." Among the several color drawings included are Characters for Bert Green's animated movie page (1945), with directions for making the panels into an animation flip book, and a book jacket design for an unpublished book The love letters of Private Mc Swivel (approximately 1948). It is unclear if Green's miscellaneous drawings, comic strips, etc. found in the collection were ever published. less

Carolyn Leigh, lyricist, was born 21 August 1926 in New York. She wrote lyrics for the Broadway shows PETER PAN, WILDCAT, HOW NOW DOW JONES, and LITTLE ME and for a tribute to labor commissioned by the U.S. Dept. of Labor, SOMETHING TO DO. She also wrote for television and numerous popular songs including "Young at Heart" and "Firefly". Ms. Leigh died in New York in 1983 and was inducted posthumously into the Song Writers' Hall of Fame in 1985. Among her principal collaborators were Cy Coleman, Mark 'Moose' Charlap, John Richards, Philip Springer, Elmer Bernstein, Morton Gould, and Lee Pockriss. The Carolyn Leigh Papers include notes, drafts of lyrics and scripts, outlines, clippings, production records, financial records and business and personal correspondence. The materials document Carolyn Leigh's private and professional life and her artistic approach. All of her Broadway shows are included as well as many unproduced musicals. After World War I, Edward J. Kelty made his main living taking traditional banquet and party photographs for his Century Flashlight Photographers Company, based in New York City. During the summer months, Kelty used a custom-made large-format camera and portable darkroom and followed circus troupes around the East Coast and Midwest, taking some of the most vivid photographs known to circus historians. However, lingering injuries from his Navy service in World War I, other personal struggles, and the hardships of the Depression led to Kelty closing his business and selling his camera and negatives by the early 1940s. Kelty died in Chicago, Illinois, in 1967. Large-format black and white photographs primarily by the Edward Kelty's Century Flashlight Photographers company document 22 circus troupes and one rodeo performing in the Midwest, East Coast, and Montreal, Canada. Images depict group portraits and exterior and interior tent views. Manuscript annotations, likely by collector and donor Harold Dunn, are present on the verso of a few images. Some photographs may be later reprints by Dunn from Kelty's original negatives. All photographs are credited to Kelty, except for a photograph of the Sparks Circus and a photograph of the Worldwide Rodeo Championship, both by Knickerbocker Photographers. less

Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files. less
