John Menzies of Philadelphia created this volume. The first section contains an account of his adventures (using the alias John Little) beginning in the years 1793-1794, including those on a slave-trading ship from Liverpool to the Congo, thence to Barbados; impressment into the British Navy; a battle with the French and his subsequent escape and journey overland from Gravesend, England to his home in Langholm, Scotland. Théodore Étienne de Saint-Léger was provost of the Special Court Provostale investigating the slave uprising in Martinique in February of 1831. This collection consists of sixty-five manuscripts relating to the 1831 slave rebellion including correspondence from the Governor of Martinique, French settlers, and police precincts on the island; register of official correspondence of Saint-Léger, the "Prévôt" (Magistrate), 1831; police reports; warrants issued by Saint-Léger for fugitive slaves suspected of arson and poisoning; court records related to the burning of the Ducasse, Lamentin, and Grande Case plantations; and biographical notes of Saint-Léger dated 1913. less

Samuel Galloway (1720-1785) was a merchant of West River, Maryland. He married Ann Chew (1725-1756) with whom he had four children, John, Benjamin, Mary and Anne. John (d.1810), also a merchant, acted as executor for the estate of his sister Mary's husband, Thomas Ringgold, Jr. of Chestertown, Maryland. The collection consists of letters, 1739-1812, chiefly to Samuel Galloway (1720-1785) and his son John Galloway (d.1810) relating to trade in slaves, tobacco, flour, wine, horses, and general merchandise as well as to family affairs. Included also are John Galloway's account book, 1777-1780, kept as executor of the estate of his brother-in-law, Thomas Ringgold, Jr. and other miscellaneous acounts, dating chiefly from 1793. This logbook was kept on board the U.S.S. Boxer by Timothy Gay, midshipman in the United States Navy, from March 13-July 18, 1816. The ship was commanded by Lieutenant John Porter. Entries describe cruises between Havana and New Orleans. Around April 7, the Argus crew boarded and detained the Carthagenian Privateer "Comet," finding a cargo of gold and silver bars, and fourteen slaves taken from Saint Andrew Island. An entry describes two men found guilty of murder of the Governor of Saint Andrew Island. On June 3, Argus crew boarded the Brig "Hunter," from Cadiz, and learned that and officer and three men on the U.S.S.
