Scope and arrangement
The Frederick D. Murphy papers are arranged in five series:

1973-1989

1975-1988
This series contains drafts and printed copies of Murphy's columns "Jam Session" and "Discotrax", written for Variety. Also included are feature articles and interviews that he conducted with a number of artists. There are also drafts for Murphy's monthly column "Inside the Big Apple", which he wrote for Black Stars.

1974-1988
Some of the material in this series concerns performers about whom Murphy wrote in his columns and articles, while other material concerns performers who he actually represented.

1977-1988
This series consists of material on organizations that Murphy represented, primarily record companies and related music associations, such as the Black Music Association.

1986-1989
This series consists primarily of printed material about a variety of topics including disco and rap music, male models, and stage productions, and files about individuals who were not involved in the music industry.
