The Schomburg zine collection is a growing collection of zines spanning the years 1991 to 2025. Zines are freeform, handmade, and independently printed small publications. They are often created in limited batches and are a popular medium amongst subcultures and marginalized communities. The Schomburg Center's zine collection primarily covers topics such as art, literature, and politics.

Biographical/historical information

The Schomburg zine collection is a growing collection of zines spanning the years 1991 to 2025. A zine (pronounced "zeen", short for magazine or fanzine) is an independently-printed and often handmade publication. They are generally created in small, limited batches and distributed for little to no cost. Zines are a popular medium amongst subcultures and marginalized communities, and often take on themes such as literature, community organizing, or social issues. The Schomburg Center's zine collection primarily covers topics such as art, literature, and politics.

Scope and arrangement

The Schomburg zine collection consists of individual issues of zines relating to Black history, public figures, poetry, and art exhibitions. The zines are arranged in numerical and alphabetical order by title.

The collection features zines published by the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, as well others from creators such as Neta Bomani, Hood Century, Mariame Kaba, and Kandis Williams, and zines published by BlackMass Publishing, Cassandra Press, Co--Conspirator Press, Infrastructure Press, Sming Sming Books, and many others.
