Scope and arrangement
The Board of Trustees Secretary Records are arranged in three series: I. Letterbooks; II. Letters Received; III. Subject Files.
The Letterbooks consist of six volumes containing copies of outgoing correspondence from the years 1895 to 1919, and one volume of letters and resolutions from 1920-27. Volumes 1-6 have indexes. Many of the letters are from John Shaw Billings, Director of the New York Public Library, or from the architectural firm of Carrère & Hastings regarding the Central Building. Subject Files consist of alphabetical files kept by the Secretary. Primary topics include members of the Board of Trustees, relations with the City of New York, and operations of the Circulation and Reference Departments of the Library.
