Jacob D. Sapir was a composer and chazan (cantor) for Congregation Orach Chaim in New York City at the turn of the 20th century. The Jacob D. Sapir scores contain manuscripts for 16 of his compositions.

Biographical/historical information

Jacob D. Sapir was a composer and chazan (cantor) for Congregation Orach Chaim in New York City at the turn of the 20th century. In 1911 he was credited as transcriber for Ceremonial Songs of the Creek and Yuchi Indians, a monograph by Frank G. Speck published by the University of Pennsylvania.

Scope and arrangement

The Jacob D. Sapir scores likely date from the turn of the twentieth century to around 1917. They consist of manuscripts for 16 of Sapir's compositions, as well as a folder of sketches. None appear to have been published. The scores include five works for wind band, four operas, three piano pieces, one orchestral work, one piece for chorus and orchestra, one choral piece, and one piece for unidentified solo instrument and piano. Six of the scores are untitled.

The scores are arranged alphabetically. Untitled scores and sketches are at the end of the container list.

The scores were previously foldered and boxed by the Music Division. Physical processing consisted of re-boxing score folders in new containers.
