The Aleksei Lapteff collection includes photographs of Lapteff's family as well as original photographs of Grigorii Rasputin and the youngest daughter of Leo Tolstoy, Aleksandra Tolstoya.

Biographical/historical information

Aleksei (Alexis) Vissarionovich Lapteff is a descendant of Dmitrii Lapteff. Dmitrii died in the 18th century. He was a grandson of Jacob Lapteff. He discovered the coast of the Arctic Ocean between the Lena River and Kolyma. The Lapteff family originated from the legendary prince Rededia (Zolotaia Orda 14th century). His descendent Varfolomei Gleboff called Lapot was the father of the Lapteffs. Most documents in the collection belonged to Alexis Lapteff and his wife Natalie Krukoff-Lapteff.

Scope and arrangement

The Aleksei Lapteff Photograph Collection mostly consists of portrait photographs of Lapteff's family as well as photographs of Grigorii Rasputin and the youngest daughter of Leo Tolstoy, Aleksandra Tolstaya. The collection contains black and white photos of largely unidentified male and female subjects. Among the subjects are military officers, military camps and ceremonies, sports and recreation, cars, boats and group photographs.

The The Aleksei Lapteff Photograph Collection is arranged in five series:

  • I. Identified photographs

    This Series mostly consists of portrait photographs of Lapteff's family as well as photographs of Grigorii Rasputin and the youngest daughter of Leo Tolstoy, Aleksandra Tolstaya.

  • II. Unidentified photographs

    Series II contains black and white photos of largely unidentified male and female subjects. Among subjects are military officers, military camps and ceremonies, sports and recreation, cars, boats and group photographs.

  • III. Negatives

    Series III includes negatives of American Relief Administration, Ufa (1921-1923).

  • IV. Printed materials

    Series IV includes pictures of the Romanov family, Metropolitan Leonty as well as personal A. Lapteff papers.

  • V. Oversized materials

    Series V includes two oversized photos of Lapteff family.

The Lapteff Collection was donated to the Slavic & Baltic Division of The NYPL by S. Krzyzanowski, the Executor of the Lapteff Estate.
