Aleksei (Alexis) Vissarionovich Lapteff is a descendant of Dmitrii Lapteff. Dmitrii died in the 18th century. He was a grandson of Jacob Lapteff. He discovered the coast of the Arctic Ocean between the Lena River and Kolyma. The Lapteff family originated from the legendary prince Rededia (Zolotaia Orda, 14th century). His descendent Varfolomei Gleboff called Lapot was the father of the Lapteffs. Most documents in the collection belonged to Alexis Lapteff and his wife Natalie Krukoff-Lapteff.

Biographical/historical information

Scope and arrangement

Collection consists of letters to and from Alexis Lapteff (1921-1988), his article about American Relief Administration work in Ufa, Russia 1921-1923, memoir by V. Novikov (both in Russian), clippings, photographs, documents, postcards made by Lapteff, notebook with poetry. Collection includes also publications such as The Michigan architect-and-engineer, 1937; Women's City Club, Detroit, 1938-1952; Znamia Rossii [The Flag of Russia], 1972; ARA Association Review; Soglasie [Consent], Bulletin of the Association of Russian Imperial Naval Officers in America, #6, 7 (1976), 8 (1977), 15 (1980), 17 (1982); a book Dreams... dreams... by Viktor Mort with author's autograph. Most materials are in Russian.

The The Alexis V. Lapteff collection of the Slavic & Baltic Division, NYPL is arranged in three series:

  • I. Correspondence

    Series I includes letters to and from Alexis Lapteff (1921-1988).

  • II. Papers

    Series II includes Lapteff's article about American Relief Administration work in Ufa, Russia, 1921-1923, memoir by V. Novikov (both in Russian), clippings, photographs, documents, postcards made by Lapteff, notebook with poetry. Most materials are in Russian.

  • III. Printed Materials
