Stravinsky and the Dance was an exhibition hosted by the New York Public Library's Dance Division in 1962 to celebrate composer Igor Stravinsky's eightieth birthday. The collection contains artwork, notes, and photographs related to the exhibition. The files were compiled by Marjorie S. Graff, a founding member of the Dance Committee at the New York Public Library.

Biographical/historical information

Marjorie Sawyer Goodman Graff (1914-2009) was a patron of the arts at various cultural institutions in New York City; New Jersey; and Chicago, Illinois. Graff was a founding member of the New York Public Library's Committee for the Dance Collection, which organized 1962's Stravinsky and the Dance exhibition. The exhibition was hosted at the Wildenstein Gallery from May 2nd to June 2nd to commemorate Igor Stravinsky's eightieth birthday. Stravinsky and the Dance showcased a combination of materials held by the Library's Dance Collection, as well as artwork loaned from other institutions and collectors.

Scope and arrangement

The collection dates from 1918 to 1968, and holds files of materials related to the 1963 exhibition, Stravinsky and the Dance, which was curated by the New York Public Library's Dance Division. The files are arranged alphabetically by topic or title, and contain a mixture of photographs, notes, clippings, illustrations, designs, reproductions of artwork, as well as the exhibition catalog. Many of the photographs depict dance performances and dancers including Melissa Hayden, Allegra Kent, Nicholas Magallanes, Francisco Moncion, Maria Tallchief, and Patricia Wilde. Among the dance companies depicted are the American Ballet, Munich Ballet, New York City Ballet, and the Pittsburgh Ballet.
