The Leonidas H. Berry papers primarily document Berry's medical career. There is correspondence (1980-1988), speeches and honors (1969-1980s), and some material on the National Medical Association. There are scattered files dealing with his work with the A.M.E. Church health program, Cook County Hospital, the Narcotic Clinic he helped establish, and others. Writings include some draft sketches and research files for his book, I Wouldn't Take Nothin' for My Journey, and correspondence dealing with the promotion and reaction to it. Included with the writings is his textbook Gastrointestinal Pan-endoscopy and the manuscript of Clinical significance of Gastrointestinal endoscopy, an update for a series of pamphlets of which he was an editor. Principally sermons, together with speeches, biographies of distinguished Afro-Americans, and personal papers including two journals, one kept while he was ministering in Bermuda, 1889-1892, and the other while on a trip to England in 1891 to raise funds for a school in Bermuda. less

The Llewellyn L. Berry Collection consists of personal papers including certificates and passport; a sermon and list of text and subjects preached by Rev. Berry from 1921 until 1936; and A.M.E. Church reports (1933-1947). There are also news clippings and articles about Rev. Berry, funeral programs, tributes, and printed matter. less

Clergyman, author and educator. Steward became a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1861 and served congregations in Macon, Georgia, Brooklyn, New York, Philadelphia, Wilmington, Delaware, Washington, D. C., and Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He was also the chaplain for the 25th Infantry where he served in the Philippine Islands and Cuba. In 1907 he joined the faculty of Wilberforce University, with which he was associated until his death, serving as vice-president, chaplain and professor of history, French and logic. Correspondence, writings, deeds, documents related to the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and journals. The journals constitute the largest section of the papers and cover his early years in the ministry in Georgia (1868-71), Haiti (1873), where he established a church in Port-au-Prince, and Philadelphia (1880s); his chaplaincy in Ft. Missoula and the Philippine Islands (1890s); and his years at Wilberforce University (1907-24). The journals contain a variety of items and are not arranged chronologically: drafts of sermons, essays, speeches; accounting notes; lecture notes and course notes. Two journals record marriages, baptisms and funerals performed by him in the Philippines. The correspondence includes letters to Steward from his children, Frank, Charles, Theophilus Bolden, Gustavus, his brother William and a letter from John W. Cromwell. less

The Floyd G. Snelson scrapbook documents Snelson's religious and political activities from 1929-1930. Clippings from West Indian and American newspapers refer to his appointment as rector to the Collymore Rock Church in Barbados in 1929, his official visits to many churches and other places in the West Indies, his activities on behalf of Collymore, speeches, and other notable activities and events which had occurred in Barbados. The scrapbook also contains the address that Snelson delivered to the Negro Progress Convention (NPC) in Guyana, as well as those of other principals that were printed in the local newspaper. Handwritten letters to him commend him on his speeches and activities on behalf of the A.M.E. Church. Several newspaper articles authored by Snelson about the Royal Geographical Society also appear in the scrapbook. less

Joseph Raspberry was born on December 14, 1901, in Green County, Alabama. Both Joseph Raspberry and his son, Beldon Raspberry, were pastors for the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. Joseph served as pastor in various Michigan and Canadian churches, including Baber Memorial AME Church in Detroit and Lewis Chapel, in Albion, Michigan. Beldon served as the artistic director of the Bridge Street Players, Bridge Street AME Church, Brooklyn, New York, and pastor of Grace AME in Staten Island, New York. This collection consists mostly of professional matter on Joseph Raspberry and his son, Beldon Raspberry. The Joseph Raspberry material contains sermons, clippings, church programs, certificates, and a memorial book. The Beldon Raspberry material includes his theological seminary application, printed matter, playscripts, and a notebook. Additionally, there are programs from other AME Churches and material related to the Brooklyn-Westchester Annual Church School Convention program. less
