Fredric Martin (b. 1923) was active as a stage actor and producer between the 1940s and the 1960s. He was co-founder of the Down East Theatre Club. In 1958, he toured with Cyril Ritchard in productions of Visit to a Small Planet and La Perichole. The Fredric Martin papers date from the 1940s to 1974 and primarily contain photographs, programs, and clippings documenting Martin's career. Photographs include production photographs from La Perichole and The Pleasure of His Company (1958), as well as personal photographs of Martin and his colleagues. The collection contains material related to Cyril Ritchard, including signed photographs, clippings, and a six-page script for Violetta, with minor annotations by Ritchard. less

Harry Clark (1911-1956) was an actor best known for his work on stage in comedies and musicals. He also had a role on The Phil Silvers Show from 1955 to 1956. The Harry Clark papers (1937-1960) contain clippings, photographs, programs, congratulatory telegrams, and other materials documenting his career. The collection contains material concerning Broadway productions such as Call Me Mister (1946), Kiss Me, Kate (1948), Wish You Were Here (1952), and Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? (1955); a Philadelphia production of That's the Ticket (1948); and the 1953 touring production of Pal Joey. Pal Joey materials include box office statements for the week of November 23rd. There are also photographs from Pins and Needles (1937), One Touch of Venus (1943), The Phil Silvers Show, and some movies that Clark appeared in. Most of the materials are held in brittle scrapbooks, some of which have been disassembled. Other materials in the collection include contracts, royalty statements, personal notes from colleagues such as Harold Rome, and personal photographs of Clark. A small number of letters and clippings date after Clark's death; these include newspaper obituaries and consolation notes addressed to his wife. less

Nugent's most notable work is the Broadway play, THE MALE ANIMAL (1941) co-written with James Thurber. His screenwriting creits include: WHISTLING IN THE DARK, THE MALE ANIMAL and SHE'S WORKING HER WAY THROUGH COLLEGE. His film credits include a lead role in THE VOICE OF THE TURTLE, as well as co-producer of THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH. Nugent died on August 9, 1980. He subsequently organized his own company, was president of the Actor's Theatre, and wrote several biographies, e.g., John Wilkes Booth and Joseph Jefferson, and drama, e.g., "The Magic Ring.". The collection contains Wilson's letters, 1890-1911, to his friend DeWitt Miller, book collector. Miller is addressed by his nickname "Jahu". The letters are primarily concerned with personal matters, Francis Wilson career as an actor, and the family hobby of collecting books, autographs, book-plates and monograms. The letters were written in New Rochelle, New York, at Wilson's home, "The Orchard" and while Wilson was on road tours. less

There is material on the plays in which he appeared, especially ERMINIE, and information on his involvement with the Players Club, but very little documenting his role as first president of the Actors' Equity Association or on the pivotal strike he led in 1919. The main political battle documented in these papers is Wilson's efforts to keep child actors out from under the jurisdiction of state labor laws. John Gielgud died in 2000. The John Gielgud letters to Howard Turner consist of notes and letters sent by Gielgud between the years 1946 and 1994. The diaries of Judith Malina include personal reflections, a history of many aspects of The Living Theatre, and a view of the avant-garde cultural life of New York in the 1940's and 1950's. Malina documents her own struggles as a young woman and artist and also the struggle, together with Julian Beck, to create The Living Theatre. Among their contemporaries and collaborators were James Agee, John Cage, Joseph Campbell, Merce Cunningham, Dorothy Day, Richard Edelman, Paul Goodman, Lou Harrison, Alan Hovhaness, Lester Schwartz and Philip Smith. Malina discusses her work on various productions including: THE AGE OF ANXIETY, DR. FAUSTUS LIGHTS THE LIGHTS, THE IDIOT KING, PHEDRE, AND TONIGHT WE IMPROVISE. Personally, Malina discusses her relationships, her family, her views of the world of the 1950's and her commitment to pacifism. Her involvement as a pacifist, and her imprisonment with Dorothy Day and others, is described in some detail. The final years of the diary (Feb. 1956-June 1959) are incomplete. They relate to the search for and renovation of the 14th Street theater, which opened in 1959. These entries are written by several people who are not identified. less

Katharine S. Brown, Glenna Tinnin and Jane Ogle of Tinnin, Brown, Inc. were actors' managers whose clients included E. H. Sothern and his wife, Julia Marlowe. Marlowe and Sothern first appeared together as Romeo and Juliet in 1904 and reigned for a decade or more as America's foremost Shakespearian players. In the late 1920s Sothern gave dramatic readings around the country and Marlowe was retired from the stage. The collection is primarily letters by Sothern to his managers on his recital bookings. The frequent letters (there are over 200), document the hardships and successes of life on the lecture circuit. There is also one folder of letters and Christmas cards by Marlowe, many written while she was traveling, most to Katharine Brown. Typed transcriptions accompany every letter. less

Actor Richard Barthelmess, who went straight from Trinity College to silent films, gave two outstanding performances for D. W. Griffith in BROKEN BLOSSOMS (1919) and WAY DOWN EAST (1920), both with Lillian Gish. With his innocent, unsophisticated image, he was a popular leading man through the 1920s, notably TOL'ABLE DAVID (1921). With the advent of sound, he moved to supporting roles. His later films included THE DAWN PATROL (1930) and ONLY ANGELS HAVE WINGS (1939). Barthelmess retired in 1942. The collection consists of four letters by Barthelmess to his friend Edward D. McDonald, a professor of English at Drexel University. The letters are mostly on personal matters though there is some mention of his films. less

A few outgoing letters discuss proposed productions. Correspondents include John Golden, Robert Edmond Jones and Eugene Ormandy. The contracts file is incomplete. Speeches, for the most part lectures on Shakespeare, theater history, and the psychology of acting, reflect his tireless work promoting the theater to college students and others. Clippings consist of production reviews and interviews with Abel. Production materials are mostly miscellaneous single items such as call sheets and schedules from films in which Abel appeared. Organizational work consists of minutes and correspondence pertaining to his work with ANTA, the Hollywood Victory Committee and other war service organizations. The collection also contains personal material on his family, awards, and a few scrapbooks of photographs. less
