Richard Henry Stoddard (1825-1903) was an American poet, author, editor, and literary critic. He worked as a customs inspector and in the Dept. of Docks in New York City; then as literary reviewer for the New York World from 1871 to 1876; city librarian, 1877; and from 1880 until his death, he was literary editor of the Mail and Express. His wife, Elizabeth Drew Barstow Stoddard (1823-1902), was a poet and author. Collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, notes, and other papers. Correspondence is with friends of the Stoddards and literary figures in America and Great Britain. Manuscripts are of poems by Richard H. Stoddard and others. Also, agreements with publishers, autobiographical and other notes by Stoddard, and family letters. (Some items are negative photostats.). less

Alfred Anthony Williams (1860- ), theologian, author and educator, was an executive and administrator of the Committee of the Federal Council of Christ, founder of the Federation Committee of Good Will Between Jews and Christians, and treasurer of the General Conference of Free Baptists. Collection consists mainly of 18th-20th century autographs, with the bulk from the mid-19th to 20th centuries, representing both primary and secondary figures from diverse fields including literature, music, education, politics, and royalty. Names include Susan B. Anthony, John Bigelow, Edwin Booth, Frederick Douglass, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, H.L. Mencken, Franklin Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Margaret Sanger, Philip Schuyler, and Daniel Webster. Figures represented are mainly Americans. Many letters are to Anthony. Following the name file is a subject file consisting of miscellaneous autograph letters arranged by profession or institution. General correspondence reflects R.R. Bowker's business affairs as well as his interest in tariff reform, free trade, copyright law, library science, civil service, and political reform. Other materials include family correspondence, 1857-1932; personal papers containing items such as childhood letters, school reports, family records, and letters of condolence; and subject papers relating to copyright, the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., free trade and tariff reform, and his biography. Also, letterbooks for the period from 1875 to 1913; Bowker's writings and speeches; diaries, 1859-1932; and travel journals from the 1860s to 1926 for trips in the United States, the West Indies, Europe, the Near East, and around the world in 1898. William Conant Church (1836-1917) was co-editor with his brother, Francis P. Church, of The Galaxy, a literary monthly, and The Army and Navy Journal, a weekly newspaper devoted to the interests of the U.S. military. The Galaxy was absorbed in 1878 by Atlantic Monthly. Collection consists of correspondence and records relating to the operations of the two publications edited by Church and his brother. Correspondence of The Army and Navy Journal includes materials depicting various battles and military personnel of the Civil War and letters written to Church from contributors, subscribers, sales agents, officials of government departments, and newspaper correspondents.
