Stella Adler (1901-1992) was a renowned American actress of stage and screen, but is perhaps best known as one of the most influential teachers of acting in the United States. The Irene Gilbert and Stella Adler Papers were collected by Irene Gilbert during her time serving as the director of Stella Adler's Los Angeles school, currently known as The Stella Adler Academy of Acting and Theatre. The papers document many of Adler's classes taught between the years 1959 to 1990, the writing of Adler's book The Technique of Acting, and some of the duties Irene Gilbert performed while serving as director of the school. Types of materials in this collection include personal and professional correspondence, transcripts, manuscripts, business files, programs, newspaper and magazine clippings, and photographs. less

Her photographs date from 1923 to 1932 and mostly consist of publicity photographs of her colleagues, including performers such as Ninita Bristow, Rollo Dix, Alice Duffy, Herbert Duffy, S.O. Gordinier, Margaret Knight, and Gene Lane. There is also a picture of radio announcer Arch McDonald. Many of the photographs are inscribed to Earle. less

Productions represented in the scrapbook include Lysistrata at the Dallas Little Theatre, Idiot's Delight in various Connecticut theaters, Trilby at the Mohawk Drama Festival, and Lightnin', all produced in 1938, and Merely Murder, produced in 1937. Lucie Lancaster (1907-1998) was an American actor who appeared in theater, television, and film. Her papers include photographs, programs, clippings, scripts, sheet music, notes, and other papers documenting her career from the 1930s to 1983. Most of the papers pertain to theatrical productions, including The Music Man (1958 national tour), The Girl Who Came to Supper (1963), and Pippin (1972). The collection also contains two costume design sketches, including one drawing for Bajour (1964) by designer Freddy Wittop. The collection includes sides and excerpts of scripts for Lancaster's various theatrical roles, as well as full scripts for The Girl Who Came to Supper and "The Old Lady Shows Her Medals," an episode of The United States Steel Hour. Scripts and sides have some handwritten changes, and sometimes contain production papers such as rehearsal or filming schedules. The collection also includes sheet music from The Girl Who Came to Supper, Bajour, and How Now Dow Jones (1967). There are headshots and publicity photographs of Lancaster from throughout her career. The earliest item in the collection is a notebook, dating to about the 1920s, labeled "Lucy Ruby, Grand Theatre Luton." The notebook contains handwritten transcripts of dialogue from plays. less

The Jan Miner papers (1932-1993) contain clippings, programs, photographs, a scrapbook, and other papers. The collection primarily concerns her work in the theater, though there are also materials related to her work in radio, television, film, and advertisements. A scrapbook documents Miner's life and career between 1932 and 1945; the scrapbook contains clippings, photographs, and programs from performances at the Straw Hat Theatre and elsewhere. The bulk of the collection consists of production files, mostly related to theater productions, dating from 1958 to 1993. Some productions are represented only by one or two items, usually a clipping or a program, while others are represented by extensive clippings, production photographs, contracts, and other materials. Some of the better-represented productions include Dinner at Eight (San Francisco, 1993), Gertrude Stein and a Companion (1985), The Heiress (1976), The Music Keeper (1982), The Show-Off (Olney, Maryland, 1975), Watch on the Rhine (Long Wharf Theatre, 1979, and John Golden Theatre, 1980), The Women (1973), and various American Shakespeare Festival productions. The file for Gertrude Stein and a Companion includes a script. The collection contains a small file on the film Lenny (1974). The collection also contains headshots and general articles about Miner. Material related to Madge and Palmolive advertisements consist mostly of photographs, clippings of print advertisements, and other printed promotional materials; there are also name badges that Miner wore in commercials. The Olga Roller papers document her career from 1908 to 1926. The collection contains production photographs from the Broadway show Eileen (1917), promotional photographs of Roller, a signed photograph of Charlotte Greenwood, programs from The Soul Kiss (circa 1911) and Madame Moselle (1914), a promotional postcard for Madame Moselle, clippings, three letters written by Harry Child of Henry W. Savage, Inc. regarding Roller, and one 1916 letter to Roller from W.H. Oviatt regarding the possibility of a role in a Herbert-Blossom production. Clippings are mounted on scrapbook pages. They date from 1908 to 1926 and concern productions such as The Merry Widow (circa 1908), Eileen, Madame Moselle, and Hearts of Erin (1917). less
