Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, writers of stage, screen, television and radio were both born in Ohio. They met in New York where they were pursuing careers in broadcasting. Among the founding fathers of Armed Forces Radio, they created and adapted many stories for radio. Later they entered the world of commercial broadcasting for both radio and television. In the 1940s they began writing plays. Among their best known works are Auntie Mame, Mame, Inherit the Wind and The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail . The Lawrence and Lee papers consist of their early correspondence and writings from broadcasting including Armed Forces Radio and commercial radio and television as well as production files and scripts from many of their major works. Also included are project ideas, other writings and speeches, scrapbooks and some photographs. The papers document their careers up until the mid-1960s. Missing from the collection are their works after this date. less

The Armed Forces Radio Service collection of broadcast recordings consists of electrical transcription discs that the AFRS distributed for broadcast. The substantial portion of the collection consists of concert recordings of the Boston Symphony, NBC Symphony, New York Philharmonic, and other groups, from 1943 through 1945. Also included are selected episodes of a wide variety of other AFRS offerings, such as Globe theater, Mail call, Command performance, Yarns for Yanks, Words with music, and Music from America. less

The Richard Barr-Clinton Wilder Papers contain a great deal of documentation on the working aspects of the collaboration between Barr, Wilder and Edward Albee whose various producing units helped to establish a number of important American playwrights in the 1960s. In addition they document the work that Barr did with Charles Woodward, Jr. after Wilder left the Playwrights Unit as well as the work done by Barr and Wilder before they formed their partnership. The Administrative Files and Production series contain correspondence; production files, such as contracts, agreements, cast and crew lists, inventories, schedules, costume plots, and lighting plots; some scripts; programs; legal papers; business papers and clippings. The bulk of the documents, however, are financial records including royalty statements, box office statements, ledgers, bank statements, invoices and receipts. The more personal papers in the collection including writings, photographs and ephemera document Richard Barr's life and work. There are no similar items documenting the life of Clinton Wilder. The scrapbooks document the work of the Playwrights Unit, mostly through clippings; they appear to have been put together by Barr. less

The Railroad hour was a program which presented excerpts of famous musical comedies, as well as original stories, for radio audiences. Each half-hour episode of the program presented the highlights of one musical. Gordon MacRae was the host and leading man for each episode; his leading ladies came from radio and the Metropolitan Opera. less

The collection contains Tuckers' appearances on radio programs, interviews, live night club performances, and various unissued studio recordings. Some of the radio programs represented in the collection are: Blue Ribbon Town; Frank Sinatra Show; It's Time for Pabst; and the Philco Hour. Other performers represented in the collection are: her pianist and orchestra leader, Ted Shapiro, Ben Bernie, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, and Orson Welles. less
