The patriarch, Samuel Ferguson, was a prosperous merchant who established familial and commercial relationships with other wealthy and socially prominent New York families, including the Walton, Morewood, Day, Ogden, Lyde, and Fisher families. The Ferguson family papers, 1727-1943, consist of 18th and 19th century correspondence, business records, financial and legal documents, diaries, and family miscellany of the Ferguson and allied families. Genealogical notes, charts, and clippings dating from the early- to mid-20th century reflect the research of Samuel Ferguson's great-granddaughter, Helen Ferguson on the family's history. less

The Smith family of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, N.Y. is descended from John "Rock" Smith, fl. 1665. Smith family documents, 1736-1942, consist primarily of deeds and other contracts concerning the Smith family of Brookhaven, N.Y. The collection includes indentures for land transactions, records of road surveys, wills, articles of agreement for employment, tenant leases, subpoenas, land search records, specifications for building a house, mortgages, accounts, receipts for payment of back taxes and a small amount of correspondence. Also present are inventories of household items, farm implements, and livestock in the possession of Joshua and Lucy Smith at the time of his death in 1811, and of their son Richard Wallace Smith's household items at the time of his death in 1868, as well as a photocopy of a Smith family tree. less

The Sands family of Block Island, Rhode Island, trace their lineage to James Sands, born in 1622 in Staffordshire, England. The collection consists of a genealogical research and personal papers relating to the Sands family. Personal papers include wills, deeds, indentures, and other documents dating from the 17th to 19th centuries. Papers consist of two volumes of collected original deeds, indentures, leases, wills, and miscellaneous correspondence of the Scudder family of Huntington, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, and a family journal and scrapbook in one volume. Volume 3 contains correspondence with Marvyn Scudder and others concerning the death in action of Jack Scudder in France during World War I. Volume 4, Marvyn Scudder scrapbook, is a journal and scrapbook with entries by members of several generations of the family of Moses L. Scudder (1843-1917), railroad president and financier of Halesite, Huntington, recording family matters and social activities, with particular reference to the upbringing of Marvyn and Philip Johnston ("Jack") Scudder. The volume, including numerous photographs of family members and their activities, also served as a guestbook for friends and family visiting the estate. less

Frederick Innes Allen (1859-1938) of Auburn, New York was an attorney who served as Commissioner of Patents during the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. His wife, Cornelia Margaret Seward, was the granddaughter of William H. Seward. Frederick I.Allen's research into the history of the Allen family includes correspondence, genealogical notes, clippings, photographs, printed material, and family charts. Original family documents in the collection dated 1706-1838 consist chiefly of correspondence, land records, and wills of Daniel Allen of Greenfield, Saratoga County, New York and Adams, Massachusetts. Also present is a notebook containing poetry, spelling or handwriting exercises, recipes, and miscellaneous notes. R. Burnham Moffat (1861-1916) was a New York City attorney and the author of several genealogical works. The Barclay, Clarkson, Moffat, and Pierrepont genealogical research papers consist chiefly of the correspondence and research files of R. Burnham Moffat created in the course of his research on the Barclay, Clarkson, Moffatt, and Pierrepont families. The collection also contains additional letters and research notes of John J. Pierrepont, Henry E. Pierrepont, and numerous clippings, particularly of family obituaries, 1791-1939. Other family members represented in the collection include Susannah Hasbrouck, Abraham Hasbrouck, Elizabeth Hasbrouck, Phoebe Nordstrom, and William Conklin. Items of note include John Hasbrouck's undated school exercise book; a list dating from 1777 of the losses sustained by Elias Hasbrouck "in the burning of Esopus," and a 1764 letter from Henry Remsen to Elias Hasbrouck, discussing the new act passed in Parliament preventing trade with non- English islands. less

The Hemingway legal files collection contains the records of Hemingway's lawyers, Maurice J. Speiser (1929-1948) and Alfred Rice (1947-1969). The papers include letters, contracts, and documents concerning foreign and domestic licensing of Hemingway's work for stage, ballet, radio, film, and television; litigation concerning the use of his writings and libel cases; and the management of Hemingway's estate (both property and literary) before and after his death. Belknap, Center, Innes, and Murphy were notable names in New England as early as the 17th century. Robert Lenox Belknap, the New York businessman most prominently represented in this collection, was a direct descendant of Abraham Belknap (d. 1643), an early settler in Salem, Massachusetts; and Joseph Belknap (1630-1712) of Boston. The Center and Innes families counted author Henry Livingston and Francis Lewis, signer of the Declaration of Independence, among their ancestors. Dr. Deas Murphy, father of Serena Deas Murphy Center, served as Chief of Surgery at St. Luke's Hospital, New York, N.Y. The William Conrad Kopper and Serena Deas Murphy Center genealogical research files contain family papers and genealogical research pertaining to the Belknap, Center, Innes, Murphy, and allied families. Correspondence, 1903-1927, of Dillingham and his associates Bruce Edwards and Fred G. Latham with theatrical people relates mainly to the casting and production of shows at the Globe Theatre and at the Hippodrome. Some of the correspondence concerns the management of the road shows on tour in the United States. Records include stage managers' reports, 1910-1911 and 1926- 1927; receipt books, 1906-1907, 1913-1914 and 1920-1928, recording box office receipts for shows at the Globe Theatre; and roster and salary records, 1908-1909. Also, personal and miscellaneous papers, some of which were removed from the R.H. Burnside Papers, containing Dillingham's memoirs of his life in the theater, last will and testament, notebook, and research notes. less

Land records relate to properties owned by the Clapps in New York City, Greenwich, Conn., 1723-1769, Westchester County, N.Y., 1705-1807, and Dutchess County, N.Y., 1740-1770. A purchase deed for land in the Bowery Ward of New York City by John Clapp is the oldest land record in the collection, dating from 1694. Estate records include wills, inventories, debts, sale accounts, and lists, notably the 1737 will of James Clapp. Family members include Benjamin, Cornby, John and James Clapp. Other family names mentioned in these documents include Cornell, Birdsall, Flamen, Franklin, Gerbrantz, Mean, Quinby, Sharpas, Vail, and Hallock. less

Adelaide Milton de Groot (1876-1967) was the daughter of William de Groot, a ship owner employed in the China trade and his second wife Elizabeth King Hawley. A painter, art collector and philanthropist, Miss de Groot was born in New York City and moved with her family to Nice, France in 1891. She lived in Europe for forty years before returning to New York in 1933. Her New York cousins included yachtsman, composer and photographer Frank Seymour Hastings and his brother the noted architect Thomas Hastings, who were the sons of Reverend Thomas Samuel Hastings and Fanny de Groot. Adelaide de Groot's sister Elizabeth married an Italian diplomat, Guilio Caravadossi, the Count of Aspremonte. After de Groot's return to New York, she pursued an interest in her family's genealogy. The papers contain the research of Adelaide Milton de Groot - including her notes, family charts, and correspondence. Adelaide Milton de Groot researched the de Groot family and the families related to her by marriage, namely the Bosworth, Brantingham, Foote, Hastings, Hawley and Robinson families. The collection consists primarily of handwritten genealogical notes and charts. Frances Adelaide (Leverich) Ingraham (1849?-1934) was a founding member of the Daughters of the Revolution and served as its president-general. Many letters are from his brother-in-law, Cornelius Ray.
