The Smith family of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, N.Y. is descended from John "Rock" Smith, fl. 1665. Smith family documents, 1736-1942, consist primarily of deeds and other contracts concerning the Smith family of Brookhaven, N.Y. The collection includes indentures for land transactions, records of road surveys, wills, articles of agreement for employment, tenant leases, subpoenas, land search records, specifications for building a house, mortgages, accounts, receipts for payment of back taxes and a small amount of correspondence. Also present are inventories of household items, farm implements, and livestock in the possession of Joshua and Lucy Smith at the time of his death in 1811, and of their son Richard Wallace Smith's household items at the time of his death in 1868, as well as a photocopy of a Smith family tree. less

The Sands family of Block Island, Rhode Island, trace their lineage to James Sands, born in 1622 in Staffordshire, England. The collection consists of a genealogical research and personal papers relating to the Sands family. Personal papers include wills, deeds, indentures, and other documents dating from the 17th to 19th centuries. Papers consist of two volumes of collected original deeds, indentures, leases, wills, and miscellaneous correspondence of the Scudder family of Huntington, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, and a family journal and scrapbook in one volume. Volume 3 contains correspondence with Marvyn Scudder and others concerning the death in action of Jack Scudder in France during World War I. Volume 4, Marvyn Scudder scrapbook, is a journal and scrapbook with entries by members of several generations of the family of Moses L. Scudder (1843-1917), railroad president and financier of Halesite, Huntington, recording family matters and social activities, with particular reference to the upbringing of Marvyn and Philip Johnston ("Jack") Scudder. The volume, including numerous photographs of family members and their activities, also served as a guestbook for friends and family visiting the estate. less

Clapp family members lived in New York City, Westchester and Dutchess Counties, N.Y., and Fairfield County, Conn. The Clapp family papers include 17th and 18th century financial records, land records, and estate records of the Clapp family of New York and Connecticut. The financial records primarily consist of promissory notes, 1722-1772, many of which relate to the debts of John Clapp. Also present are Thomas Clapp's accounting records, dating mostly from 1804-1815, and additional miscellaneous receipts and accounts. Land records relate to properties owned by the Clapps in New York City, Greenwich, Conn., 1723-1769, Westchester County, N.Y., 1705-1807, and Dutchess County, N.Y., 1740-1770. A purchase deed for land in the Bowery Ward of New York City by John Clapp is the oldest land record in the collection, dating from 1694. Estate records include wills, inventories, debts, sale accounts, and lists, notably the 1737 will of James Clapp. Family members include Benjamin, Cornby, John and James Clapp. Other family names mentioned in these documents include Cornell, Birdsall, Flamen, Franklin, Gerbrantz, Mean, Quinby, Sharpas, Vail, and Hallock. less

Frederick Innes Allen (1859-1938) of Auburn, New York was an attorney who served as Commissioner of Patents during the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt. His wife, Cornelia Margaret Seward, was the granddaughter of William H. Seward. Frederick I.Allen's research into the history of the Allen family includes correspondence, genealogical notes, clippings, photographs, printed material, and family charts. Original family documents in the collection dated 1706-1838 consist chiefly of correspondence, land records, and wills of Daniel Allen of Greenfield, Saratoga County, New York and Adams, Massachusetts. Also present is a notebook containing poetry, spelling or handwriting exercises, recipes, and miscellaneous notes.
