The Actor's Workshop and Repertory Theatre of Lincoln Center records contain the administrative and production records of the two companies, and document the creative output and operational activities of directors Jules Irving and Herbert Blau, and manager Alan Mandell. The Actor's Workshop was a San Francisco-based professional theater company, founded by Jules Irving and Herbert Blau that presented experimental and classic productions from 1952 to 1966. In 1965, Irving and Blau became the artistic directors for The Repertory Theatre of Lincoln Center, a fledgling theater company with the goal of presenting plays of social and emotional significance in a repertory format. Longtime collaborator and theater manager Alan Mandell accompanied Blau and Irving to the Repertory Theatre. This collection contains both companies' administrative files, correspondence, photographs, play critiques relating to the companies' play selection process, production files, publicity materials, and set and costume designs. Additionally, the collection houses the Jules Irving papers, which contain files concerning his involvement in other companies and a collection of scripts. less

The Paul Cranefield Papers, 1824-2002 [bulk years 1951-2002], document medical doctor and theater enthusiast Paul Cranefield’s interest and contribution to New York City’s theatrical world, and in particular the Off-Off Broadway movement. The collection consists of administrative files created by the La Mama Experimental Theatre Club and the Circle Repertory Theatre, in which Cranefield served as a board member for several years. They include correspondence, meeting minutes, notes and agendas, legal and financial records, grant applications, leaflets and brochures, production inventories, and Cranefield’s writings on subjects related to theater and collecting. There are also scripts, photographs, clippings, and a considerable number of programs and posters from productions created by La Mama and Circle Repertory Theatre, as well as from productions of the 1800s, collected by Cranefield. less

The papers of Lucille Lortel relate the details of her life and career from teen years to her death in 1999, and include correspondence, production files, scripts, programs, production photographs, personal and family photographs, organization files, clippings, memorabilia, and scrapbooks. Lucille Lortel's life spanned the twentieth century, so in addition to providing details of her family and personal life her papers encompass many aspects of the theatrical history of her era. Lortel is credited with fostering the Off-Broadway movement and providing a forum for avant-garde and experimental work at her Theatre de Lys. Lortel's productions at the White Barn and the ANTA Matinee Series at the Theatre de Lys brought works by Jean Genet, Sean O'Casey, Athol Fugard, and others to a wider audience. Many of these productions are represented in the collection by correspondence, programs, photographs and clippings. Over the years Lortel also worked closely with several non-profit theaters as a donor and mentor. Her affiliations with Circle in the Square, Circle Repertory Company, Goodspeed Opera House, Yale Repertory Theatre, and other companies are documented in the organization files. less

The collection documents the early years of Off-Off Broadway productions in New York City. It consists of black and white photographs by James D. Gossage of many of the productions staged at La Mama, Caffe Cino, Circle Repertory, Playwrights' Workshop and other small avant garde theaters as well as photographs of individuals at the forefront of the Off-Off Broadway movement: Joe Cino, Ellen Stewart, Leonard Melfi, Tom Eyen, Lanford Wilson, Marshall Mason, and others. Also includes a few photographs of theater interiors, three flyers, one program and an article about Caffe Cino written by Magie Dominic. less
