Margaret Williams was born on April 6, 1800 in Calcutta, to Robert Williams, a merchant and auctioneer, and his wife, Margaret. Robert Williams died in 1813, leaving his wife to care for Margaret and six other daughters; charitable subscriptions were taken up in India, and donations were solicited in London. At age 16, Margaret married Nathaniel Hudson, a lawyer, with whom she had a number of children. Nathaniel Hudson died in Calcutta in 1846. By the early 1850's, Margaret and her younger children were living in London with her brother-in-law, John Hudson, and other family members, at Upper Lansdowne Terrace in Notting Hill. Margaret Hudson died at age 59, at her home at Avenue Lodge, Southall, on February 19, 1860; she was buried at Kensal Green Cemetery. Her youngest daughters, Emily (1836-1904) and Adeline Maria (1838-1911), never married, and lived together into their later years. Reverse calf-bound notebook with "Receipt Book" stamped in black on the spine and "Mrs. N. Hudson / Receipt Book. / 1st Sept 1830" in ink manuscript on the front cover. The first 39 leaves seem to be primarily in one hand, probably that of Hudson herself. Most entries give a source (usually a person, many identified by initials only) and a date. Household and medicinal receipts (for making ink, tooth powder, furniture varnish; cures for the cough, hydrophobia, dysentery, cholera, snake bites, flatulency, etc.) are interspersed with cooking directions for a wide variety of dishes, many reflecting Hudson's life in British India (Cashmerian chutney, Country Captain, fowl curry, kedgeree, etc.). Leaves 40-46 contain mounted recipes written on smaller sheets of paper, some possibly in Hudson's hand. A letter dated 24 August [circa 1860's?] to Emily Hudson from "G. M.," referring to "the accompanying . . . recipes," is laid in. The remaining leaves contain a few printed late 19th century food-related advertisements (Felix Schell, "provider of Parisian dinners"; Domenico Piccirello, "importer of French and Italian produce"; and The American Freezer, "shown in practical operation at The Atomospheric Churn Company") and 20th century recipes, both in manuscript and printed clippings. Five pages at the end, reverso, contain manuscript verses in an early 19th century hand ("Morning Hymn"; "Evening Hymn"; "Lines addressed to Miss M. W."), apparently original and possibly by Nathaniel Hudson. less

Eugénie de Vergès, née Choppin d'Arnouville. She was born on September 13, 1774 to René Choppin d'Arnouville, chevalier, a counsellor to Louis XV and president of the Cour des Monnaies; and his wife, Marguerite-Élizabeth de Chazot. On February 4, 1793, in Paris, she married Jacques-Claude de Vergès. Their first son, Marie Fortuné (1794-1864), was a notable civil engineer; their second son, Adolphe Florimond (1795-1875), was a councillor at the Cour de Cassation. Eugénie de Vergès died on April 4, 1843. The larger of the two volumes (89 manuscript pages; 77 total leaves + 4 loose manuscript inserts) is a commonplace book containing original poems, translations, and notes on a variety of subjects. On the front paste-down is a contemporary note ("Ouvrages de Mlle Eugénie Choppin, depuis Mde. Devergès, faits depuis l'anée 1790") and the large engraved stationer's ticket of De Lermoy, Versailles. The smaller volume (40 manuscript pages; 75 total leaves) is chiefly devoted to accounts and contains entries from 1811 to 1840; with the stationer's ticket of Niodot, Place du Vieux Louvre. Notebook containing eleven manuscript poems, most apparently original. Some are in lament of the author's wife, Caroline, who died of childbed fever. Loosely inserted are six manuscript fragments and poems (two of which are copied into the volume); two poetical newspaper clippings; and a tattered sheet of used blotter paper. less

A number of biographical details of the Rev.d Edward Ward remain uncertain. His diary records his marriage to an unnamed bride on 5 June 1827 in Leghorn; marriage records reveal her to be Emma Crump (1800-1856). She was the daughter of the Rev. Henry Crump of Leighton, Shrewsbury, and his wife, Elizabeth, née Price (or "Pryse"). In 1845, after Edward's death, Emma married John Davies Corrie (1797-1878), a Welsh solicitor. The author of the diary is possibly the same "Reverend Edward Ward, clerk" whose will was probated in London on 24 January 1843, naming his wife, "Emma Ward," and his daughter, "Ellen Sarah Ward," as heirs. That Edward Ward was present at the 1842 marriage of his daughter, in Liverpool, to Samuel Sampson, attorney, and was probably the son of the Liverpool merchant Robert Ward (d. 1830) of Liscard, Chester. Not to be confused with the Rev. Edward Ward (1771-1835), minister of Iver and author of a number of published sermons. Red roan-backed notebook with the original French verses copied on the versos and Ward's English translations on the facing rectos. Printems et l'Amour ou Le Baiser Charmant, Chansonnier was published in Paris by Tiger in 1820. Ward, an Englishman, made these translations while on an extended tour of France and Italy which he recorded in his diary (cataloged separately). Includes poems by Auguste Moufle, Armand Séville, P. Cecilia Smith was born on January 23, 1811, the fifth child of the Rev. Samuel Smith (1765-1841), later dean of Christ Church, Oxford, and his wife, Anne. In 1833 Cecilia married the Rev. Richard Harington (1800-1853), who became Principal of Brasenose College in 1842. The Haringtons had three children: Richard (later Sir Richard Harington, 11th Bart.), Charles and Margaret. Cecilia Harington died June 18, 1844, aged 33. Poetical commonplace book containing poems apparently copied from contemporary printed sources. The last seven leaves contain 32 mounted clippings from newspapers (one, at least, from The Morning Post); another small clipping is laid in. The earliest dated clipping is apparently from 1796; the latest year mentioned in a clipping is 1813. less

Sewn notebook with semi-stiff drab covers, containing six poems, a verse fragment, and one newspaper article copied in a single unidentified hand. The poems include: "On the Invention of Letters" ("Tell me what genius did the art invent"); "Ode to Fancy," by Joseph Warton; "Ode to Truth," by William Mason; "Slavery," by Erasmus Darwin; "Edwin and Emma," by David Mallet; and "The Rose," by William Cowper. The verse fragment, unidentified and possibly unpublished, begins: "Joy singley [sic] known is only known in part / And grief unshar'd falls heavy on the heart . . . ." The seven-page news story's source is cited as "The Liverpool Gazette dated Novr 19 1791," and describes an attempted robbery at Deptford which was foiled by a dog. less

Sewn notebook containing fourteen manuscript pieces, chiefly poems copied from known eighteenth-century English writers, in unidentified divers hands. Three poems are by "W. H., aged 15," and are apparently unpublished. There is a light pencil sketch of a lady sleeping beneath a tree on the verso of leaf 1, and a few small sketches of faces are on the recto of leaf 20. The front cover bears an oval-bordered woodcut scene (10 x 15 cm) titled "Farm Yard"; the covers are printers' waste, the inside being part of a form for registering freeholders. less

Commonplace book containing over 90 poems, epigrams, and riddles, many of which are illustrated with original watercolor vignetttes and decorative borders. A calligraphic title page ("La Bagatelle") is followed by a half title which reads: "Extracts. / / 1812." The opening poem, written by the compiler and signed "E. M.," explains that the pieces in the volume were "cull'd to entertain tho none are mine." Most pieces copied in the same neat hand and apparently taken from contemporary British printed sources; identifiable authors include Shakespeare, Lady Morgan, William Cowper, Samuel Rogers, Robert Burns, George Crabbe and Lord Byron. Sketchbook and commonplace book of Eliza A. J., an otherwise unidentified, probably British woman who made entries circa 1825-1827. Contains 14 ink or ink-and-wash drawings, 8 watercolors, and 3 pages of manuscript transcriptions. Most drawings and paintings are signed "Eliza" and one is also signed "E A J." All entries are undated except for one, dated 1827 and the paper is watermarked 1825. Two drawings give credit to sources (Adriaen van Ostade, Thomas Orde); others are probably after other artists, though some may be original. less

Marianne Wing was born about 1819 in Braintree, Essex, England, the daughter of William Wing. By 1851 she was living in Chelmsford with her husband, William Abbott, a retired farmer, and their two young children, Joseph William and Clara Maria. Ten years later she was living with her husband in Black Notley. By 1881 she was widowed and living with her unmarried sister, Sarah Wing, in Lambeth. In 1889, at age 70, she married James Raper, a joiner/carpenter, at St Stephen's, Walbrook. She died an inmate at Peckham House Lunatic Asylum on February 17, 1892. Manuscript notebook containing 36 original poems and prose meditations, with 12 original illustrations. A dedication, to the author's brother, is dated January 20, 1836; another piece is dated 1834. Most of the other pieces are undated, but appear to have been written around the 1830's and are signed either "M Wing" or "M W." One poem (leaf 43 recto) is signed "Marianne Wing." The final two poems, dated 1880 and 1881 (each written to one of her grandchildren), are signed "Mrs. Abbott" and "M. Abbott," respectively. An ownership inscription at the front reads: "Mrs. W. Abbott / Original Poems." The illustrations, mostly watercolors of birds and flowers, include pencil drawings of Cowling Castle in Kent, a rose, and a sailboat. The first sixteen pieces are copied from Elizabeth Anne Le Noir's Village Anecdotes (1804). Most of the other pieces are, or appear to be, copied from contemporary periodicals; named sources include the European Magazine, the Lady's Magazine, and the Lewes Journal. Identified or identifiable authors include Robert Lloyd, John Dent (M.P. and banker), Christopher Smart, Jonas Hanway, and Alexander Pope. Nine of the pieces could possibly be original and unpublished: "On a Neighbour's Decease," page 17; "Found Written in the Prayer Book of Miss B.," page 23; "On the Harrow Band," page 24; "To the Miss Grah-ms of Chelsea, By a Naval Officer," signed "H.E.B.," page 25; "Song" ("In infant years, e'er my poor panting heart"), page 25; "Song" ("To freedom born young Pressail's heart"), page 26; "On a late Festival at the Crown at H---w to the Miss B's," page 33; "Morning" ("The clock proclaims the day to country sleepers"), page 34; and "Origin of Oyster Eating" ("He who at first converted me to meat"), page 35. The paper bears the watermark of S. C. Wise, paper manufacturers of Maidstone, Kent, and is dated 1810. less
