Henry Myers (1893-1975) was an American writer and lyricist who wrote in many genres of fiction including plays, musicals, motion pictures, revues, and novels. Before becoming a writer, Myers was a composer and classical pianist. The Henry Myers papers (1894-1975) document his long and prolific career as a professional dramatist, lyricist, and novelist, as well as his earlier career as a pianist. The collection consists of writings, production files, scrapbooks, and a small amount of personal material. To a lesser extent, his work as a screenwriter is represented. less

Eleanor King was a pioneer in the field of modern dance. She was an an original dancer of the Humphrey-Weidman group, a choreographer, and a teacher. Miss King became one of the first dance instructors in the United States, she was a professor in the Theatre Department at the University of Arkansas. The collection contains correspondence, teaching notes, dance and choreography notes, drafts of three books, programs, clippings, and sketches. less

Al Hirschfeld (1903-2003) was an American caricaturist known for his distinctive black and white line drawings. The Al Hirschfeld papers (1905-2006) hold thousands of photographs documenting twentieth-century theater, film, and television; they were in Hirschfeld's possession for reference purposes. While these photographs comprise the majority of the collection, the collection documents other aspects of his career and personal life predominately through correspondence and photographs. less

Artist and gay rights activist Copy Berg was born Vernon E. Berg, III on July 10, 1951. He attended the United States Naval Academy from 1970-1974 and then served with the U. S. Navy Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. In 1975 the Navy sought to release him by General Discharge on grounds of homosexuality. Berg fought a highly publicized legal battle against the Navy but lost the case and was released in 1976. He settled in New York where he studied at Pratt Institute and launched his career as an artist. In 1986 Berg was diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). His subsequent artwork explored the social response to the AIDS epidemic, sexual politics and sadomasochism. Berg died of an AIDS-related illness on January 27, 1999. The Copy Berg Papers include correspondence of the artist, his friends and his family; records of Berg's service in the United States Navy and his discharge dispute; artwork; photographs; audio and video recordings; printed material and ephemera. less

James Turcotte (1945-1993) was an American art gallery owner and tax advisor who began writing in the late 1960s. At first he wrote fiction and free verse reflecting his experiences as a gay man, father, drug user, and resident of Los Angeles and New York. After being diagnosed with AIDS in 1988, his writings were primarily poetic and journalistic observations of his life. Collection consists of Turcotte's writings, sketches, photographs, and videocassette produced by Turcotte. Turcotte's writings, 1969-1992, include poetry, fiction and journals, some illustrated with sketches. Also, sketchbooks, 1975-1986, by Turcotte; photographs; and videocassette he produced at Gay Men's Health Crisis in 1991 containing poetry readings and commentary by writers with AIDS. less

The majority of the Knorr papers is comprised of set designs and production materials. The collection illustrates Knorr’s multiple talents and his unifying role as a producer. The designs and plans include Knorr’s early work for the Capitol and Roxy theaters, a formative time in his career. Amongst the designs are those of the Milton Berle shows (1948-1952) and the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants in the early 1960s. less

Family correspondence, 1864-1954, and general correspondence, 1880-1954, contain chiefly incoming letters, many from prominent figures in journalism, the arts, and politics, in both the United States and Great Britain, as well as figures from countries of special interest to Bigelow, especially Germany and Japan. Correspondents include associates and figures such as Henry Mills Alden, James Bryce, Roger Casement, Samuel Clemens, Geraldine Farrar, Henry George, Percy and Ella Grainger, Edgar Lee Masters, Frederic Remington, George S. Viereck, and Israel Zangwill. Bigelow's writings cover a wide range of interests with travel observations, politics, and colonial studies being most prominent and consist of drafts, manuscripts and printed copies of his writings in addition to journals, notes, sketches, photographs, maps, printed matter, and clippings. Materials collected about Germany include correspondence with Emperor Wilhelm II, members of his family, and government officials, 1881-1945, and a journal of Bigelow's trip to Constantinople with the Emperor in 1899. Also contains an unpublished biography of his father, John Bigelow. Biographical materials, 1865-1950, include scrapbooks, diaries, sketchbooks, correspondence, photographs and prints, clippings, and memorabilia. less

Anthony Holland (1928-1988) was an actor and playwright best known for his comic performances in theater, film, and television. He was a founding member of the Second City satirical improvisation comedy troupe in Chicago. This collection documents his personal and professional life from 1956 to 1988. less
