The Personal papers provide partial documentation on his childhood and migration to the United States, his employment in the Civil Service in New York, his military record, his association with the Urban League, the Urban Center at Columbia University and the Douglass Urban Corporation, his alumni affiliations and his membership in various professional and political organizations, including the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, the Boston Area Black Studies Consortium, the National Association of Black and Ethnic Studies Directors and the National Council of American-Soviet Friendship. The Labor and politics series documents Guinier's career as Secretary-Treasurer of the United Public Workers of America union, his association with the American Labor Party as a candidate for the Manhattan Borough presidency in 1949, and his work in the 1950s and early 1960s with the Harlem Affairs Committee and the Jamaica Coordinating Council. The series consists primarily of correspondence, articles and speeches written by Guinier, minutes and reports of UPW's Executive council. Francis Smith Belton (ca. 1791-1861) was a career officer in the U.S. Army who served in the Mexican War. He was married to Harriet Kirby Belton (1798-1873); their son Winfield Scott Belton (1820-1889) fought with the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Collection consists of the papers of Francis Smith Belton, Harriet Kirby Belton, Winfield Scott Belton, and members of the Dawson, Kirby and Todd families who were related to the Beltons. Papers of Francis Smith Belton, 1818-1853, include correspondence with his wife, military papers (some are copies) and an autobiography. Papers of Harriet Kirby Belton, 1829-1854, consist mainly of correspondence with her husband during the period of the Mexican War. Winfield Scott Belton's papers, 1832-1887, include correspondence with his wife relating in part to his activities during the Civil War. Kirby family papers consist of correspondence of various family members. Dawson papers, ca. 1763-1813, include correspondence of Joshua Dawson who emigrated to the U.S. from Ireland. Todd family papers, 1819-1861, contain correspondence concerning naval service and political and military events during the Mexican War. Other materials include family and legal papers, certificates of commission, 1859 log, commonplace book from 1835 to 1842, photographs of family members, clippings, and issues of various newspapers. less

Two portrait albums, of the Harvard College Class of 1855 and of the Class of 1856. The Class of 1855 album belonged to George Foster Hodges. Both albums contain formal portrait photographs of selected students, faculty members, and views of the Harvard campus. Many pages include the autograph of the sitter, and most of these signatures date to the 1830s Harvard class albums of this era were not mass-produced, but instead contained their owner's selection of photographs. Joseph Green Cogswell (1786-1871) was an educator and librarian. He was appointed librarian and professor of mineralogy and geology at Harvard University in 1820, founded the Round Hill School in Northampton, Mass. with George Bancroft in 1823, owned the New York Review from 1839 to 1842, and worked with John Jacob Astor on the establishment of a large public library in New York City. In 1848 he was appointed the first superintendent of the Astor Library. Collection consists of ten original documents and photostats of Cogswell's papers from other repositories. Original documents are chiefly letters, 1817-1861, to and from Cogswell and discuss such topics as his schooling in Germany and the Astor Library. Photostats are of original documents, mostly correspondence, pertaining to Harvard, Round Hill School, and other matters concerning Cogswell. less

Charles Alexander Nelson (1839-1933), librarian and bibliographer, was a Reconstruction administrator in New Bern, North Carolina, for a decade following the U.S. Civil War. He returned to the North in 1875 and worked until 1909 in various libraries. He published bibliographies, indexed books and organizational records, wrote articles, and was a founding member in 1876 of the American Library Association. Collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, legal and financial documents, reports, organizational records, scrapbooks, photographs, and printed matter that document Nelson's career. Bulk of the collection is correspondence, 1859-1930s, concerning his work in North Carolina after the Civil War, his positions at the Astor, Howard Memorial, Newberry, and Columbia College libraries, and his activities as a bibliographer, indexer and writer. Also, Nelson's papers from his years in New Bern, 1865-1876; Howard Memorial Library reports, 1889-1891; records, 1880s-1900s, of various organizations to which he belonged; writings including his history of Waltham, Mass.; and personal and miscellaneous materials. less

Nicholas Kelley was a New York City lawyer and civic leader. He served as an assistant secretary in the U.S. Department of the Treasury from 1918 to 1921 and later specialized in arbitration and labor law. Kelley was vice president of the Chrysler Corporation from 1937 to 1957 and served on the boards of such civic and social reform organizations as the National Consumers' League and the Visiting Nurse Service. The collection consists of professional and family correspondence, personal documents and ephemera related to Kelley's education at Harvard, his career as a lawyer in New York City, as assistant secretary in the Treasury Department, and his involvement with legal and civic reform organizations. less

Roland T. (Roland Taylor) Ely (1924-2014) was an American historian, known for his work on New York City merchant and banker Moses Taylor (1806-1882) and sugar production in 19th-century Cuba. The Roland T. Ely papers, 1951-1961, contain his slide presentation "Moses Taylor and the Cuban Trade, 1832-1882," describing his use of The New York Public Library's Moses Taylor Papers and his research in Cuba while a doctoral student. Also included are some of Ely's research computations on Moses Taylor's business finances; typescripts of his academic writings on contemporary United States-Latin American relations; documents relating to a film project promoting inter-American relations by Student-to-Student, Inc. with the Princeton Film Center; copies of awards received from the governments of Argentina and Ecuador; and copied news clippings relating to Ely's professional activities and his research in Cuba, with some loose printed matter. Edward Estlin Cummings was an American poet, novelist, playwright and essayist. He was a graduate of Harvard University (B.A. 1915, M.A. 1916). Le Baron Russell Briggs (1855-1934) was a professor, dean, and college president at Harvard University. E.E. Cummings submitted this unpublished academic essay, "Remarks Occassioned [sic] by Poetry" for a course he took at Harvard with Le Baron Russell Briggs, History and Principles of English Versification ("English 16"). Cummings places his literary analysis in the context of an entertaining conversation with a spirit, the discussion ranging from Beowulf to the modernists of his own time. Aside from the notation of a spelling error in the title, emendations appear to be made by Cummings.
