The Smith family of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, N.Y. is descended from John "Rock" Smith, fl. 1665. Smith family documents, 1736-1942, consist primarily of deeds and other contracts concerning the Smith family of Brookhaven, N.Y. The collection includes indentures for land transactions, records of road surveys, wills, articles of agreement for employment, tenant leases, subpoenas, land search records, specifications for building a house, mortgages, accounts, receipts for payment of back taxes and a small amount of correspondence. Also present are inventories of household items, farm implements, and livestock in the possession of Joshua and Lucy Smith at the time of his death in 1811, and of their son Richard Wallace Smith's household items at the time of his death in 1868, as well as a photocopy of a Smith family tree.

Once in the United States, she became a celebrated star of the Yiddish theater, with active roles in theater as well as cinema, until 1928 when she succumbed to illness. One of her best known roles was the title character of the play

Riddle Woman. The collection consists of correspondence, personal and professional papers, and theatrical memorabilia from Bertha, her husband, Leopold Spachner, and daughter Lillian Kalich Spachner concerning her stage career and is primarily in English with some materials in German, Yiddish, and Hebrew.

The Hasbrouck family papers include original documents and copies of documents relating to the Hasbrouck family of New Paltz, New York, 1730-1858. The bulk of the papers are comprised of legal documents such as indentures, wills, and financial documents including property lists, account books, and receipts. The papers belong predominantly to John Hasbrouck; Elias Hasbrouck (1741-1791), a merchant from Woodstock, Ulster County, NY; and Richard M. Hasbrouck. Other family members represented in the collection include Susannah Hasbrouck, Abraham Hasbrouck, Elizabeth Hasbrouck, Phoebe Nordstrom, and William Conklin. Items of note include John Hasbrouck's undated school exercise book; a list dating from 1777 of the losses sustained by Elias Hasbrouck "in the burning of Esopus," and a 1764 letter from Henry Remsen to Elias Hasbrouck, discussing the new act passed in Parliament preventing trade with non- English islands.

The Waldorf-Astoria Hotel was originally built as the Waldorf Hotel at Fifth Avenue and 33rd St. in New York City in 1893 and was merged with the Astoria Hotel in 1897. The hotel was torn down in 1929 and the new Waldorf-Astoria Hotel opened in 1931 on Park Avenue between 49th and 50th Streets. The collection contains records of the original Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City from the opening of the Waldorf Hotel in 1893 to the closing of the Waldorf-Astoria in 1929. Most of the records cover the period from the 1890s through 1917. Included are guest registers; hotel correspondence of managers Oscar Tschirky and Willard H. Barse; registers of special event bookings, of package deliveries, and of lost and found articles; hotel investigator's logs; floor plans; and examples of the many types of financial records kept by the hotel.

These papers of William Chandler, Lieutenant in the United States Navy, include a logbook, a journal, text books and notes about seamanship and navigation, and other related materials. Included is a logbook of the U.S. prize schooner Patuxent which Chandler, the ship's commander, kept from October 7-November 25, 1845 while en route from Monrovia to New York. The first part of the logbook is missing, and entries end while the ship was in Bermuda undergoing repairs. There are remarks about chronometer no. 114 at the back of the volume Chandler's journal of a cruise aboard the U.S.S. Constellation from Norfolk, Virginia to the West Indies, Key West, and Pensacola, Florida, contains entries made between July 28, 1835 and February 15, 1836. He mentions reinforcements and protection given to residents of Tampa, Florida. Other materials in the collection include text books on seamanship in the U.S. Navy (1832); watch, quarter, and station bills of the U.S.S. Grampus (1837); notes on seamanship (1839); stations and missives of the U.S.S. St. Mary's (1848); watch and quarter bills, stations, and missives of a frigate (1854); and a list of the leading lights of St. George's (Irish) Channel (1864)

Belknap, Center, Innes, and Murphy were notable names in New England as early as the 17th century. Robert Lenox Belknap, the New York businessman most prominently represented in this collection, was a direct descendant of Abraham Belknap (d. 1643), an early settler in Salem, Massachusetts; and Joseph Belknap (1630-1712) of Boston. The Center and Innes families counted author Henry Livingston and Francis Lewis, signer of the Declaration of Independence, among their ancestors. Dr. Deas Murphy, father of Serena Deas Murphy Center, served as Chief of Surgery at St. Luke's Hospital, New York, N.Y. The William Conrad Kopper and Serena Deas Murphy Center genealogical research files contain family papers and genealogical research pertaining to the Belknap, Center, Innes, Murphy, and allied families. Included in the collection are genealogical notes, pedigrees, genealogical charts, as well as original family documents such as wills, contracts, diaries, scrapbooks, and photographs.

Stella Duckworth (1869-1897) was the half-sister of Vanessa Stephen Bell, Virginia Stephen Woolf, and Thoby and Adrian Stephen by her mother Julia Jackson Duckworth's marriage in 1878 to Sir Leslie Stephen (1832-1904), a prominent Victorian author and editor. Stella Duckworth married solicitor John Waller ("Jack") Hills (1867-1938) on April 10, 1897 in London, where she died on July 19, 1897. The Hills-Duckworth papers, dated circa 1860-1955, consist of personal and family correspondence, financial documents, photographs of Duckworth and Stephen family members, graphics, and miscellaneous items that were largely in the possession of Stella Duckworth at the time of her marriage to John Waller Hills in 1897, and retained by him after her death. They hold additional correspondence and other items belonging to John Waller Hills and his second wife, Mary Grace Ashton Hills.

National Intelligencer, 1823-1850; and financial documents, including signed agreements, a bill of sale for an enslaved man, checks, and notes, 1829-1850. Correspondence concerns political, legal and business matters; many items have been published. Recipients include James A. Hamilton, H.W. Kinsman, Virgil Maxcy, and newspaper publishers Gales & Seaton. Notable content includes an 1850 bill of sale to Webster for William Alexander Johnson, and Webster's 1851 letter to David A. Abraham Yates Jr. (1724-1796) of Albany, New York, was an American lawyer, politician, and political essayist of the Founding Era. He was an Anti-Federalist during the Confederation and Constitutional periods, known for his writings as "Rough Hewer" and "Sidney" in the New York press. Yates held many elected and appointed offices, notably Albany alderman (1753-1773), high sheriff of the city and county of Albany (1754-1759), chairman of the Albany Committee of Correspondence (1775-1776), and member of the four New York Provincial Congresses and the State's first legislative convention (1775-1777), chairing the committee to write the State's constitution. He then served as New York State senator (1777-1790), Continental Loan Officer for New York (1779-1786), delegate to the Confederation Congress (1787-1788), and mayor of Albany (1790-1796). The Abraham Yates Jr. papers, 1688-1920s (bulk 1754-1795), chiefly span his professional and political activities in New York from 1754 until his death in 1796, reflecting his work as sheriff, lawyer, Revolutionary War patriot, public official, political essayist, and avocational historian. The papers comprise correspondence, documents, and printed matter, 1688-1825; a letter book kept while Continental Loan Officer, 1779-1782; journals, including a record of his time as sheriff during the French and Indian War, 1750s-1790s; drafts of his political and historical writings for publication, 1783-1796?; research materials serving his legal, political and historical endeavors, 1750s-1790s; and papers concerning the Manor of Rensselaerswyck, 1761-1700s.
