Edward Hugh Sothern (1859-1933) was an American actor and author who appeared on the New York and London stages; Julia Marlowe (1865-1950) was a successful actress in New York. They became co-stars in 1904, were married in 1911, and toured, mainly in Shakespeare plays, until her final retirement in 1924. Sothern devoted much of his later years to public readings, lectures and writing. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, theatre materials, financial and legal papers, and photographs. Correspondence, ca. 1860-1950, is between Sothern and Marlowe and with colleagues, family and friends; other correspondence concerns business and legal matters. Literary papers, ca. 1908-1929, contain notes, copy books, drafts, and typescripts of essays, poems, lectures, articles, and books by Sothern and Marlowe. Theatre-related materials, 1920s-1930s, include papers on Sothern's recitals, notes, prompt books, account books, box office statements, and 1926 Actors' Equity scrapbook. Morton DaCosta (born Tecosky), stage and film director and actor, was born 7 March 1914 in Philadelphia. A graduate of Temple University, Mr. DaCosta began his career as an actor and director in regional theatre in 1937. He made his acting debut on Broadway in 1942 in THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH and his New York directing debut in 1949 with a revival of SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER. Among his many productions are PLAIN AND FANCY (1955), NO TIME FOR SERGEANTS (1955), AUNTIE MAME (1956) with which he made his film directing debut in 1958, and THE MUSIC MAN (1957). Mr. DaCosta died in 1989. The Morton DaCosta Papers consist of scripts and promptbooks, production materials, correspondence and personal papers documenting his life and career as a director and actor of stage and film. The papers span the years 1929 to 1978 and include such productions as THE MUSIC MAN, SARATOGA, NO TIME FOR SERGEANTS and AUNTIE MAME, among others. less

Vivian Martin, actress, was born in Michigan, 22 July 1893. She made her stage debut in 1901 in CYRANO DE BERGERAC and was then seen in PETER PAN and LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY. As an adult she acted in numerous Broadway shows and then turned to the cinema where she appeared in silent films for Paramount Pictures. After her marriage to Arthur W. Samuels in 1926, Miss Martin retired from the stage and screen. Vivian Martin died 16 March 1987. The Vivian Martin Papers consist of 53 items including halftones, personal papers, photographs, a programme of FATHER AND THE BOYS and a promptbook of LITTLE LORD FAUNTLEROY. less
