The Straus family of New York City were the descendants of Lazarus Straus (1809-1898) and Sara Straus (1823-1876) who emigrated from Otterberg, Germany in the early 1850s with their four children: Isidor (1845-1912), Hermine (1846-1922), Nathan (1848-1931), and Oscar (1850-1926). They settled in Talbotton, Georgia where Lazarus opened a dry goods store. In 1865 the Strauses relocated to New York City and Isidor and Nathan joined their father in establishing L. Straus and Sons, a glass and chinaware store. They became partners with R.H. Macy's & Company in 1888 and by 1892 were also partners in the Brooklyn N.Y. retail company Abraham & Straus. Isidor Straus represented New York City's fifteenth district in the U.S. Congress, 1893-1894; and was founder and president of the Educational Alliance, an organization for immigrants living in New York. He and his wife were among the passengers who lost their lives in the sinking of the Titanic. Oscar Straus served as U.S. ambassador to Turkey from 1887 to 1900 and 1909, Secretary of Commerce and Labor from 1906 to 1908, and advisor to Woodrow Wilson during the first World War. Collection contains correspondence, speeches, photographs, scrapbooks, and other items concerning Lazarus, Oscar and Isidor Straus, and Isidor's sons and grandsons. Family papers include genealogical charts and family history. Oscar and Isidor Straus papers consist of one box of materials concerning Oscar Straus's 1912 campaign for governor of New York and other political and family matters; the remaining eleven boxes are papers of Isidor Straus and include family and business correspondence, speeches and writings, notebooks, scrapbooks, materials related to his political career and to his death on the Titanic, and biographical information. Papers of Isidor Straus's sons consist of personal and business papers with correspondence, speeches, scrapbooks, and clippings. L. Straus & Sons records concern the operations of the partnership. Francis Vinton Greene (1850-1921) was an American soldier, engineer and author. His military duties included serving as military attaché in Russia in 1877, teaching at West Point, and commanding volunteers during the Spanish-American War. In 1903 he was appointed Police Commissioner of New York City. He also worked as an engineer on various projects and wrote military histories. Collection consists of Greene's correspondence, his papers pertaining to service in the Spanish-American War, speeches, miscellaneous materials, and books. Correspondence, 1801-1921, includes general correspondence; letters from Theodore Roosevelt, Major General Emory Upton and General William Tecumseh Sherman; and family letters. Spanish-American War papers, 1898-1900, contain orders, telegrams, accounts, reports, and some correspondence. Speeches, 1898-1918, were given by Greene as a soldier, businessman and police commissioner. Miscellaneous papers, 1801-1915, consist of a wide range of materials relating to all aspects of Greene's life and include genealogical information, orders, maps, memoranda, drafts of articles and reports, notes, photographs, and clippings. Bound volumes are orderly books (including 1776 orderly book of Nathanael Greene), writings on military tactics, diaries kept by Greene, and correspondence. less

Emma Catherine Manley Embury (1806-1863) was an American poet and novelist who was a frequent contributor, under the pen-name Ianthe, to popular periodicals. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, financial and legal papers, notebooks and albums, photographs, and printed matter related to Embury and her family. Writings include poetry and prose with original manuscript of Guido, A Tale and Other Poems. Also, family papers such as deeds and real estate records; correspondence and notebooks concerning the distribution of Embury's poetry; cookbook; photographs; and clippings. less

Henry Hunter Peters, merchant and farmer, had a mercantile business in California and then farmed in Southboro, Mass. Collection consists of diaries, correspondence, accounts, lectures, photographs, and printed matter. Diaries, 1850-1856, describe Peters's journeys by steamer from New York to California and Oregon; his life as a merchant in California during the early period of the gold rush; and life on his dairy farm in Southboro, Mass. Includes personal and business letters; mercantile accounts of Peters and Hazeltine and Scranton and Peters in San Francisco and Sacramento; lectures on farming and on his 1871 trip to Europe; and diary, 1851-1852, of H.C. Samuel Thompson (1738-1811) was a farmer and physician of Setauket, Long Island, New York. Collection consists of Thompson's diaries with transcripts and some family papers. Diaries, 1800-1808, chronicle events in the life of Thompson's family and neighbors in Brookhaven Township and Suffolk County. Family papers, 1710-1858, include wills, bills of sale for slaves and indentures for servants, land deeds, estate inventories, and letters. Thomas Swann Woodcock (1805-1863) was an English-born steel engraver who was director of the Brooklyn Apprentices Library (now incorporated in the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences) in New York. Journal narrates Woodcock's travels in 1836 along the Hudson River in New York by various means of transportation. He describes the manners and customs of the people encountered and the scenery along the way. Volume contains photographs of Woodcock and etchings of the route he followed. less

David H. O'Keefe was a shorthand reporter in New York City, active between 1880 and 1926. He was managing editor of Shorthand & Typewriting News, librarian and editor of the New York State Stenographers Association, contributor of shorthand articles to business periodicals, and active in the National Shorthand Reporters Association. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, photographs, and artifacts related to shorthand and the typewriter. Correspondence, 1893-1923, contains letters concerning shorthand and related subjects. Writings include speeches by O'Keefe and others, drafts of monographs including The History of Typewriting, and shorthand notes and notebooks. Also, bibliographies, 1880-1923, about shorthand books and shorthand libraries; photographs of champion typists, shorthand and typing conferences, and shorthand authors; and artifacts, 1883-1921, from business conferences, speed contests and fairs. less

Edgar Allan Poe was an American author, poet, and critic. The collection contains a holograph manuscript of the poem "Eulalie," a roll manuscript of "Thou Art the Man," fragments of extracts of periodical criticism, an undated fragment on Coleridge as plagiarist, and a draft to L.A. Godey for Harnden & Co., 1846. In addition to Poe manuscripts, the collection contains eleven letters from George W. Eveleth to Poe, 1845-1849, artifacts, printed reproductions, facsimiles, and descriptions of Poe documents, and related printed material. less

Jerome B. Howard (1860-1923) was associated with the Phonographic Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, notes, shorthand notebooks, and photograph. Bulk of the collection is manuscripts in Benn Pitman shorthand of letters and writings concerning the trial of Mary Surratt for alleged complicity in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Francis Smith Belton (ca. 1791-1861) was a career officer in the U.S. Army who served in the Mexican War. He was married to Harriet Kirby Belton (1798-1873); their son Winfield Scott Belton (1820-1889) fought with the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Collection consists of the papers of Francis Smith Belton, Harriet Kirby Belton, Winfield Scott Belton, and members of the Dawson, Kirby and Todd families who were related to the Beltons. Papers of Francis Smith Belton, 1818-1853, include correspondence with his wife, military papers (some are copies) and an autobiography. Papers of Harriet Kirby Belton, 1829-1854, consist mainly of correspondence with her husband during the period of the Mexican War. Winfield Scott Belton's papers, 1832-1887, include correspondence with his wife relating in part to his activities during the Civil War. Kirby family papers consist of correspondence of various family members. Dawson papers, ca. 1763-1813, include correspondence of Joshua Dawson who emigrated to the U.S. from Ireland. Todd family papers, 1819-1861, contain correspondence concerning naval service and political and military events during the Mexican War. Other materials include family and legal papers, certificates of commission, 1859 log, commonplace book from 1835 to 1842, photographs of family members, clippings, and issues of various newspapers. less

John Jacob Astor (1763-1848) was an American merchant, fur trader and capitalist. John Jacob Astor, III (1822-1890), financier and philanthropist, was his grandson; and William Waldorf Astor (1848-1929), who became Viscount Astor after moving to England in 1890, was his great-grandson. Collection consists of papers of John Jacob Astor and his grandson and great-grandson. Papers of John Jacob Astor, 1792-1849, include correspondence (some photostats) concerning real estate and other business transactions, legal affairs and family matters; financial records; and 1849 report by executors of Astor's estate. Papers of John Jacob Astor III and William Waldorf Astor, ca. 1800-1916, chiefly relate to genealogical matters, William Astor's life in England after 1890 and his efforts to obtain a peerage. The Authors Club of New York was founded in 1882. Members included Robert Louis Stevenson, Stephen Crane, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Mark Twain, and Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt. The club was disbanded and its assets were turned over to the New York Public Library in 1973. Collection consists of negative photostats of materials collected by the Authors Club of New York.
