The patriarch, Samuel Ferguson, was a prosperous merchant who established familial and commercial relationships with other wealthy and socially prominent New York families, including the Walton, Morewood, Day, Ogden, Lyde, and Fisher families. The Ferguson family papers, 1727-1943, consist of 18th and 19th century correspondence, business records, financial and legal documents, diaries, and family miscellany of the Ferguson and allied families. Marilla Waite Freeman was born in Honeoye Falls, New York, in 1870. After receiving a degree in literature from the University of Chicago in 1897, Freeman became a librarian. Her career included positions with the the Newberry Library, St. Joseph's Hosipital, and various public libraries, including those in Michigan City, Indiana; Davenport, Iowa; Newark, New Jersey; and Cleveland, Ohio. She also published numerous essays on literacy, poetry, and the importance of literature. She died in Yonkers, New York, in 1961. The papers consist largely of correspondence and ephemera relating to her support of the Academy of American Poets. Some personal correspondence with friends, family members, and authors is present, including several exchanges with Frieda Lawrence, wife of D.H. Mary de Camp Banks Moore (b.1878) was the daughter of Gen. Robert Lenox Banks, Secretary and Assistant Treasurer of the New York Central Railroad, and Mary de Camp Corning, widow of Edwin Weld Corning, who was the nephew of Erastus Corning, President of the New York Central Railroad. She was born and raised in Albany, N.Y. In 1901 she married Maurice Moore; they resided in Lynchburg, Va. The Mary de Camp Banks Moore papers consist of her personal papers and her genealogical research on the De Camp, Carmer, Lenox, Banks, and allied families. Personal papers, 1896-1949 and undated, consist of her writings, including a notebook of personal reminiscences written 1913 recording her early life in Albany prior to her marriage in 1901, and notes on the early life of her mother, Mary de Camp Banks (b. 1843); personal correspondence, with some Banks family notes; and ephemera, including certificates and invitations. Also present are photographs, including cabinet cards, cartes-de-visite, and tintypes, of Mary de Camp Banks Moore, family members and friends,and residences. Genealogical research materials, 1857-1950 and undated, compiled by Mary de Camp Banks Moore circa 1910-1950, contain correspondence regarding her research on the De Camp, Carmer, Lenox, Banks, and allied families, as well as late 19th century De Camp family correspondence; genealogical research scrapbooks on her maternal grandfather, U.S. Navy Rear Admiral John de Camp, and her maternal great-grandfather, Samuel G. Henry Marcus Quackenbush (1847-1933) was an inventor and industrialist who developed and manufactured guns, nutcrackers, and nut picks, among other items. He founded H.M. Quackenbush Company in 1871. Quackenbush was a native of Herkimer, New York, where he was active in organizations such as the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), the Salvation Army, and the Anti-Saloon League. The Henry Marcus Quackenbush papers date from 1885 to 1992. The majority of the collection consists of correspondence, ephemera, and financial records dating from 1890 to 1933, documenting Quackenbush's involvement with charitable organizations, his family life, household management and expenses, and business operations and sales. Two ledgers contain Quackenbush's monthly financial statements from 1906 to 1922, and two sales books list figures of daily sales for 1893 to 1899 and 1915 to 1935. Materials dating after Quackenbush's death include a report on the Quackenbush company's tax liability; writings about Quackenbush and the guns he manufactured; letters from gun collectors to Bronson A.
