Rev. John Raines, Jr. (1818-1877), born in Yorkshire, England, was an itinerant Methodist Episcopal minister associated with the Genesee Conference of New York State. He was the son of Rev. John Raines (born ca. 1784) and Mary Raines, who emigrated from England to Philadelphia, eventually settling in Canandaigua, New York. John Raines, Jr. married Mary Remington in 1838. Their sons John Raines (1840-1909), author of the Raines Law, and Thomas Raines (1842-1924) were prominent New York State politicians. Commonplace book and record book of services performed 1847-1872 by Rev. John Raines, Jr. as a Methodist Episcopal minister in western New York State. Services are recorded in chronological order. Records of baptisms, 1848-1871 (p. 30-45) note individual names, place, date and age; marriages 1847-1871 (p. 148-168) note bride and grooms' names, place, date, expenses and fees; records of funerals 1844-1872 (p. 52-71) note name, place, date of death, disease and age. Localities visited in Ontario County and other western counties include Victor, Geneva, Lima, Lyons, Corning, Hodding, Rochester, Lyons, and Elmira, among others. Personal material interspersed throughout the volume include transcriptions of poetry, anecdotes, and historical and theological items; clippings; personal memoranda; a family record of John Raines Jr. and Mary Remington and their children (p. 73), with a Christmas poem signed J. Raines, Philadelphia, 1831, loosely laid in; and a manuscript architectural plan for a dwelling house (p. 108-109). Original writings include verses by John Raines signed with place and date, many written for personal albums or as epitaphs for tombstones, as well as patriotic verses written during the Civil War, 1861-1864. Presentation album for Alfred J. Smithers, with photographic portrait, containing autographs, Sunday School lists, pressed flowers, and testimonials from church members, families and groups associated with the Clinton Avenue Congregational Church and Society in April, 1867. The volume, prepared on the occasion of Smithers' return to his native England with his family, acknowledges his service to the church and its congregants, and to the poor. Inserted in the volume is a memorial dated 20 Jan. 1875, acknowledging Smithers' recent death in London, and a later photograph of an unidentified man wearing a kilt. less

Tailors Isaac Platt Hull (1813-1883) and his brother, Denney Hull, Jr. (1831-1900) were born in Danbury, Connecticut. They were descendants of George Hull, who emigrated from England to Dorchester, Massachusetts, in 1692. I.P. Hull & Company was located at 553 Broadway until roughly 1870, when it moved to 590 Broadway. George E. Bryers and M. M. (Mark M.) Slater were undertakers of Grahamsville, Sullivan County, New York. Mark M. Slater acquired the business from the estate of George E. Bryers on April 1, 1916. Henry Chase (1790-1853) was a Methodist Episcopal clergyman. The Mariner's Church, formally dedicated in 1820, was a non-denominational church located on Roosevelt Street in New York City. It was founded by the Society for Promoting the Gospel among Seamen in the Port of New York, later known as the New York Port Society. The collection consists of transcripts from original records of marriage and baptismal services performed 1821-1853 by Rev. Henry Chase of the Mariner's Church in New York City. James Sheldon Merriam was born in 1829 in Port Leyden, Lewis County, New York. He studied law at Columbia University, graduating in 1854. The Methodist Society of New York was formed in 1820 by 300 seceding members of the Methodist Episcopal Church after disputes over administrative issues and the empowerment of the laity to weigh in on Chuch matters. William M. Stillwell served as the first pastor of the Methodist Society, out of their church on Chrystie Street. The collection records marriages performed by Rev. Stillwell between 1818 and 1851. Mary de Camp Banks Moore (b.1878) was the daughter of Gen. Robert Lenox Banks, Secretary and Assistant Treasurer of the New York Central Railroad, and Mary de Camp Corning, widow of Edwin Weld Corning, who was the nephew of Erastus Corning, President of the New York Central Railroad. She was born and raised in Albany, N.Y. In 1901 she married Maurice Moore; they resided in Lynchburg, Va. The Mary de Camp Banks Moore papers consist of her personal papers and her genealogical research on the De Camp, Carmer, Lenox, Banks, and allied families. Personal papers, 1896-1949 and undated, consist of her writings, including a notebook of personal reminiscences written 1913 recording her early life in Albany prior to her marriage in 1901, and notes on the early life of her mother, Mary de Camp Banks (b. 1843); personal correspondence, with some Banks family notes; and ephemera, including certificates and invitations. Also present are photographs, including cabinet cards, cartes-de-visite, and tintypes, of Mary de Camp Banks Moore, family members and friends,and residences. Edwin Riley McCarty was born in Pennsylvania in 1830 and worked in the hotel industry in New York City. The McCarty family genealogical research papers consist mainly of the correspondence of Edwin R. McCarty, dating 1869-1903, concerning his genealogical research on the McCarty family of Pennsylvania. McCarty traced the descendants of Thomas McCarty and Elizabeth Lancaster, both of Bucks County, who were married in 1765. The collection includes a few letters to and from Aaron Lancaster, 1853-1854, genealogical notes, family trees, and a map of northern Bucks County showing land held by the McCartys, as well as miscellaneous clippings and printed material. Hanks was best known for patenting "flight strips," auxiliary landing areas for aircraft alongside public highways, advocating for their development and implementation in various parts of the country in the 1930s. Round Top Lutheran Church, named for the structure's round-topped roof, was established in Dutchess County in about 1746. The locality is now a hamlet called Bethel in the the town of Pine Plains. The church was established after the break up of a Moravian Indian Mission called Shekomeko, which was located on farm land owned by Edward Huntting The church records include births, baptisms, and lists of communicants mainly from 1760 to 1787, but with some additional entries, possibly unrelated to Round Top, recording vital statistics from the early 19th Century. The collection was transcribed in 1921 by Walter Kenneth Griffin. The transcription has been microfilmed and is available in the Milstein Division less

Rufus King (1838-1924) was a banker by profession as well as a respected genealogist. The son of Rufus Sylvester and Phoebe Odell King, his New England ancestors included the revolutionary war veteran and New York State Senator Rufus King, after whom he was named. William Salmon (1684-1759) of Southold, Long Island, was a grandson of William Salmon (b. 1610) who emigrated from England to Southold in 1635. The collection includes the original manuscript (1 v.) known and published as the Salmon Records, a private register of marriages and deaths, 1696-1815, of residents and persons associated with the town of Southold, Suffolk County, New York, as well as a separate manuscript index (1 v.) compiled by Joseph H. Petty in 1860. The register was started by William Salmon (1684-1759) of Southold, and continued by members of the Salmon family. The volume contains what appear to be two separate registers, later bound together and re-paginated in red ink as one. The first, a register of deaths with a few marriages, spans 1696-1815; the second, of marriages, spans [1702]-1811. The manuscript index compiled by Joseph H. Petty in 1860 conforms to the re-pagination. less
