Abbot Howard "Abbie" Hoffman (November 30, 1936 – April 12, 1989) was a political and social activist who came into prominence in the 1960s when he co-founded the Youth International Party ("Yippies") and was a member of the “Chicago Eight,” the group that was tried for conspiracy and inciting to riot during the 1968 Democratic National Convention. The collection includes typed and photocopied drafts for the publications Soon to Be a Major Motion Picture (Putnam, 1980) and Square Dancing In the Ice Age (South End Press, 1982) (some under the working title “Free: a Radical American Romance”), with manuscript notes by Hoffman and his editors; published articles considered for books, correspondence with editors and publishing companies, and manuscript notes for speeches (1970s-early 1980s). less

Victor Francis Calverton (born George Goetz) (1900-1940), radical reformer and author, was founder and editor of Modern Quarterly, an independent Marxist journal. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, business records, photographs, and printed matter. Calverton's correspondence as editor of Modern Quarterly is with many of America's left-wing literary figures of the 1920s and 1930s, including William Z. Foster, Bertram Wolfe, Scott Nearing, Edmund Wilson, Max Eastman, and A.J. Muste. Included is correspondence with Leon Trotsky in which Trotsky and Calverton discuss the nature of proletarian literature. Personal correspondence consists mainly of Calverton's love letters, 1928-1940, to Nina Melville, his second wife. Also, manuscripts of articles, books, book reviews, debates, and lectures; business records of Modern Quarterly; scrapbooks containing reviews of Calverton's writings; and photographs of Melville and Calverton. less

The Emmett Grogan Papers is an archive of manuscripts and typescripts, comprising, articles, manifestos, screenplays, ideas for films, short stories, and poems by Emmett Grogan, accompanied by a group of similar writings by him and others that appeared in The Digger Papersa collective publication published by the Diggersboth parts of the archive spanning the years 1965-1968. Grogans papers document his journey from a young writer, aspiring filmmaker, and actor with the San Francisco Mime Troupe, to his central role, with Peter Berg, as the Diggers leading theoretician and activist. The archive contains early writings by Grogan from his time in Rome, Dublin, and London, and includes several of his most important Digger manifestos, some of them written with his boyhood friend and fellow New Yorker, Billy Murcott.
