Ida Husted Harper (1851-1931), American journalist and suffragist, was an associate and biographer of Susan B. Anthony and collaborated with Anthony on writing History of Woman Suffrage. Collection consists of scrapbook compiled by Harper with clippings of her articles relating to women's suffrage. Also included are clippings of articles about Harper's activities, and pamphlets and other printed materials relating to her suffrage work. Personal materials include a flyleaf dedicated to her by Susan B. Anthony. less

Frank Weitenkampf (1866-1962) worked for the New York Public Library for 61 years. He started as a page at the Astor Library in 1881, became head of the NYPL Art Department, and served as Curator of Prints from 1921 until his retirement in 1942. Weitenkampf wrote several books and numerous articles on prints, was a print collector, and corresponded with artists and other collectors. Early in his career he used the pseudonym Frank Linston White. Collection consists of Weitenkampf's correspondence and his writings. Letters, spanning the years 1888-1962, include those received by Weitenkampf and drafts of his replies. A portion of the letters relates to Weitenkampf's official duties at NYPL. There are rarely more than a few letters from any one individual except for the following: Samuel P. Avery (1822-1904), a merchant and art collector; Edwin D. French (1851-1906), an engraver; and Julius J. Lankes (1884-1960), who was a printmaker specializing in woodcuts. The rest of the collection consists of Weitenkampf's own writings, both published and unpublished. Two of the manuscript works, Social History of the United States in Caricature and American Life in American Prints, are valuable for locating visual source material for American history. Living in One Man's Reading is a typed collection of quotations that appealed to Weitenkampf. Copies of his published works are all annotated by Weitenkampf with corrections or additions to the text. There is also an 8-volume scrapbook containing clippings of articles written by Weitenkampf, clippings mentioning him, and a few letters from editors concerning his articles. less

A Russian-American violoncellist and music teacher, Evsei Beloussoff came to the United States in 1923, made a transcontinental tour, and appeared in New York as a soloist and in sonata recitals with Ossip Gabrilowitsch, Wanda Landowska, and Rubin Goldmark. In later years he taught at the Juilliard Institute of Musical Arts and at the Y.M.H.A. Music School. The collection includes autobiographical writings, official documents, clippings, business correspondence, programs, and cartoons. 2 musical scores have been cataloged in the Scores file (JPB 90-3 and JPB 90-4). 15 scrapbooks of programs of concerts in Beloussoff's home in New York and 5 scrapbooks of programs of other concerts have been microfilmed. less

Felix Mendelsohn, Jr. (1906-1991), was an advertising copy writer based in Chicago. As a young man, Mendelsohn aspired to be a journalist. He found work writing promotional copy, booklets and brochures for various companies. He died in 1991 at the age of 84. The Felix Mendelsohn scrapbook holds a number of interviews with prominent actors and actresses of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. At the age of 21, aspiring journalist Felix Mendelsohn, Jr. conducted a number of interviews with famous stage performers in which he asked each one to describe the "most thrilling moment" of his or her career. Mendelsohn developed these interviews into profiles, and hoped to sell the resulting series to a newspaper or magazine, but was unable to do so. He later compiled the profiles into a scrapbook, adding photographs of all the interviewees, some of which were inscribed to him. The performers profiled were Helen Hayes, Otis Skinner, Helen Gahagan, John Drew, Irene Bordoni, Richard Bennett, Helen Menken, John Cromwell, Ina Claire, Dennis King, Fay Bainter, Laurette Taylor, Grant Mitchell, Lowell Sherman, Ruth Draper, Florence Reed, Estelle Winwood, John E. Kellard, Wilton Lackaye, O.P. Heggie, Effie Shannon, Elsie Janis, Frank Keenan, Leo Carillo, Amelita Galli-Curci, Arthur Byron, Louis Mann, Lenore Ulric, and Raymond Hitchcock. Mendelsohn also included in his scrapbook rejection notes the proposed series received from several newspapers and publishing syndicates, dated between 1927-1935. More photographs are tucked into the back of the book, mostly actors who were not interviewed by Mendelsohn and prominent personalities outside the field of theater; many of these photographs are autographed and inscribed to Mendelsohn. Fiorello H. La Guardia (1882-1947) began his political career as deputy attorney of the state of New York in 1915. He was a representative in the U.S. Congress from 1917 to 1932 except for service in World War I and a term as president of New York's Board of Aldermen from 1919 to 1921. La Guardia ran for mayor of New York City in 1933 and served in that office for twelve years. He became director of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation program in 1945 after leaving the mayor's office. Papers document La Guardia's career as a congressman, president of the Board of Aldermen and three-term mayor of New York. The two largest portions of the collection are the congressional and mayoral correspondence files. Congressional correspondence, ca. 1918-1933, includes letters received and carbons of responses written either by La Guardia or by his secretary on his behalf, clippings, greeting cards, printed House bills, invitations, photographs, memoranda, notes, press releases, printed matter, and telegrams. Letters from constituents concern topics such as employment and naturalization and letters from citizens around the country relate to La Guardia's stand on issues before Congress, including social issues and prohibition. Mayoral correspondence files, 1933-1945, consist largely of correspondence with members of the public who wrote requesting help with education, employment, immigration, prison terms, and other problems; suggesting appointments for various city offices; and offering ideas, opinions and appreciation. Very little appears to document the daily operations of city business. Edith O'Shaughnessy (d. 1939) was an American author of fiction and autobiographical narratives concerning her life abroad. She was active in causes related to the Roman Catholic Church. Her husband, Nelson O'Shaughnessy (1876-1932), was a U.S. career diplomat who was stationed in Denmark, Russia, Austria-Hungary, and Mexico. After leaving the diplomatic service, he had a career in private industry. Elim O'Shaughnessy (1907-1966), Edith and Nelson O'Shaughnessy's son, joined the diplomatic service and served in France, the Soviet Union, Britain, and Hungary. Collection contains materials relating to Edith, Nelson and Elim O'Shaughnessy. Correspondence of Nelson O'Shaughnessy, 1899-1928, concerns diplomatic matters, his career in business, and personal and family affairs; correspondence of Edith O'Shaughnessy, 1907-1936, relates to her social and diplomatic life, war work in France, political activities, career as author of books and articles, and family matters. Some financial records are included with the correspondence. Her notes and diaries, 1907-1935, are largely social in nature. The Milton A. Galamision Papers are primarily a collection of the Reverend's sermons. A few personal items, other writings, and clippings complete the collection. The papers have been divided into the following five series: personal papers, writings, broadcasts, church activities, and civil rights activities. The writings series (1953-1987) contains over one thousand sermons which Galamison preached at Witherspoon Presbyterian Church in Princeton, New Jersey, his first church (1947-1948) and Siloam Presbyterian Church. Additionally, there is a copy of Galamison's Master's thesis, "Salvation Themes in the Great Religions," an unpublished autobiographical manuscript, "A Grand and Awful Time." The latter is an account of attempts by African Americans to change the New York City school system, particularly focusing on Galamison's struggles during thirteen years of fighting for integration. Mary Garrett Hay (1857-1928) was an American suffragist and civic leader who was active in the New York suffrage movement. She helped Carrie Chapman Catt set up the offices of the National American Woman Suffrage Association in New York in 1895. Hay was president of the New York State Federation of Women's Clubs from 1910 to 1912, chair of the League of Women Voters in New York City from 1918 to 1923, and served the Republican Party in various official capacities. Collection consists of scrapbook with materials related to Hay's career. Scrapbook contains letters, reports, clippings, leaflets, pamphlets, speeches, and photographs pertaining to her work on behalf of women's clubs, the Republican Party, suffrage, and the League of Women Voters for the years 1895 to 1928. Morehead Patterson (1897-1962) was an American industrialist whose father, Rufus L. Patterson, invented the first automated cigarette manufacturing machine. Morton Baum was the chair of City Center’s Finance Committee from 1943 to 1968. In the 1960s he became its managing director. City Center was responsible for presenting many of the most important dance, music, opera and drama companies in New York City during the middle of the 20th Century. Baum was also instrumental in bringing that same quality of the arts to the newly-formed Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts Inc.
