Charles Patrick Daly (1816-1899) was an American jurist, lecturer and writer who served as a judge of the New York City Court of Common Pleas for over forty years, the last twenty-seven as chief justice. Maria Lydig Daly, his wife, was active in the Democratic Party and various welfare organizations of the Civil War period. Her diaries of this period were published in 1962 under the title: Diary of a Union Lady, 1861-1865. Papers include correspondence; legal papers; writings and lectures; personal and legal scrapbooks; and diaries and notebooks. Also included are papers belonging to Maria Daly, wife of Charles P. David Hunter McAlpin (1816-1901) was a tobacco manufacturer and philanthropist. In addition to owning the tobacco firm, D.H. McAlpin Company, he also made substantial investments in real estate including the McAlpin Hotel in New York City and was a director of several banks and insurance and energy companies. Collection consists of McAlpin's estate papers, correspondence, scrapbooks of clippings, and photographs. Estate papers, 1871-1930, are the legal and financial documents executed by McAlpin's heirs and include legal papers; accounts; cash books, 1901-1927; journals, 1901-1927; and ledgers, 1901-1923. The Tilden and Hazard family scrapbooks were assembled by Laura Pelton Hazard. Hazard was granddaughter of Samuel J. Tilden's sister Mary B. Tilden. Laura Pelton married William Ayrault Hazard in 1885; the couple had six children. This collection contains photographs, clippings, letters, programs, and other ephemera and memorabilia related to the Tilden family and the Hazard family. The majority of the materials concern Laura and William Hazard and their children, including photographs that show the family at their home Meadow Hall in Cedarhurst, Long Island, as well as on vacation in various locations. Other material relates to family ancestry, Cedarhurst society, and William Hazard’s polo career. Materials related to Samuel J. Tilden and the Tilden family are largely in volumes 1 and 2 and box 1, and include photographic portraits of Tilden family members; correspondence such as letters written by Samuel Tilden to his parents and sister while he was a student at Yale; and clippings such as political cartoons depicting Tilden. less

Adam W. Spies (1800-1891), the son of Mary Bergh and John Spies, was a hardware and military goods merchant in New York City. He was employed by the firm of C. & J. D. Wolfe, and was their agent in England in the 1820s. In 1834 he established A. W. Spies & Company, later Spies, Kissam & Company, retiring in 1866. He acquired extensive landholdings in New York City, upstate New York, and numerous other states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey, and Wisconsin, among others. In 1832 he married Sarah Ann Morrison (d. 1883), daughter of John C. Morrison of Monmouth County, New Jersey. Spies was a founding member of the Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor.The Adam W. Spies real estate and genealogy scrapbook is primarily a record of his real estate transactions, containing numerous manuscript plat maps, many in watercolor with extensive annotations; a few printed maps; listings of properties, taxes and assessments; and legal notes. Holdings in Manhattan and Williamsburg, Brooklyn are especially well documented. Genealogical materials include charts and notes concerning the Spies, Morrison, and Bergh families, and autobiographical accounts, with advice to grandchildren, recalling his career, his service as a volunteer fireman, and life in Manhattan prior to the building of the Erie Canal and Croton Aqueduct. The volume also contains pasted clippings, certificates and receipts, cut silhouettes of Spies, and a few sketches, notably a watercolor street view by Spies of his father’s place of business in Manhattan as depicted in 1808. There are some miscellaneous letters and notes relating to family and real estate matters, some loose, including a genealogical inquiry to his son-in-law John W. Cochrane dated 1907. A few of Spies’s genealogical entries are updated to 1930. Adolph Simon Ochs was an American newspaperman and the publisher of the New York Times for almost forty years, from 1896 to 1935. Under his leadership, the paper acquired an international reputation for objective and trustworthy reporting. The collection contains correspondence, letterpress books, scrapbooks, financial records, blueprints, maps, land surveys, photographs, honorary degrees and awards presented to Ochs, and other material related to his life and career. The main areas of focus in the collection are the Chattanooga Times, the New York Times, the Philadelphia Public Ledger, the Philadelphia Times, Ochs' continuing interest in the city of Chattanooga, and personal and family matters. less

Alexander E. MacDonald, M.D. (1845-1906) was a prominent American physician and psychiatrist, and a leader in the development of New York City's public institutions for the treatment of mentally-ill persons. The collection consists of Dr. Alexander MacDonald's scrapbook of entertainments held for patients in New York City public hospitals on Blackwell's Island and Ward's Island, 1873-1875, and several letters and documents relating to his professional activities, 1897-1902. The scrapbook, dated 1873 August 30-1874 June 19 and 1875 June 9, contains pasted newspaper clippings and programs documenting part of a series of weekly entertainments initiated by MacDonald for patients of Charity Hospital on Blackwell's Island (now Roosevelt Island), 1873-1874, with an 1875 clipping for an entertainment at the New York City Asylum for the Insane on Ward's Island. Letters and documents chiefly pertain to MacDonald's attendance at professional conferences abroad, certifying his membership and credentials; there is also a personal letter from George E. Dodge (1849-1904) to MacDonald, 1902 June 28, regarding MacDonald's work on Ward's Island. A civil service flyer and a half-tone photographic portrait of MacDonald are included. less

Gwendolen Haste (1889-1979) was an American poet. She wrote poems and short stories, worked in public relations at the General Foods Corporation from 1926 to 1954, and was active in the Poetry Society of America. She won the Nation Poetry Prize in 1922. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, materials pertaining to Haste's work at General Foods, photographs, and printed matter. Correspondence concerns her work and personal and family matters. Writings include published and unpublished poems, short stories, reminiscences, 1908 and 1912 diaries she kept at the University of Chicago, travel journals, and literary notebooks. Richard Ward Greene Welling (1858-1946), New York City lawyer and reformer, was founder of the National Self Government Committee and president of the George Junior Republic. He was active in political and municipal reform and belonged to many social and political organizations. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, scrapbooks, personal papers, photographs, and printed matter. Correspondence, ca. 1894-1941, relates to Welling's involvement with various social, political, cultural, and reform organizations. Robert Bonner (1824-1899) was a newspaper publisher and trotting horse breeder. He owned and published the New York Ledger. Collection consists of general correspondence, trotting horse papers, financial documents, writings, photographs, and artifacts. General correspondence includes letters to Bonner as proprietor of the New York Ledger, with a few drafts of his replies, mostly from contributors offering stories, suggesting plots, soliciting money, acknowledging remuneration, and relating to personal matters; letters from Presbyterian clergymen about church affairs; and letters from the owners of the New York Sun, New York Herald, and New York Times, revealing Bonner's willingness to lend financial aid to those newspapers. Papers relating to the breeding, development, and shoeing of trotting horses contain letters from owners, breeders, veterinarians, editors of sporting journals, and others from all parts of the United States, especially Kentucky; notes on horses; accounts; scrapbooks of newspaper clippings containing biographical data and other material on the horse and on the Scotch Irish Society of America; and photographs, sketches and artifacts. less

The Robert Underwood Johnson papers document Johnson's personal and professional life from 1875 until his death in 1937. Johnson, born in 1853, served on the staff of The Century Magazine until 1913, eventually rising to the position of editor in chief. He also served as the American Ambassador to Italy from 1920-1921, and was active in the causes of nature conservation and copyright law. The papers contain personal correspondence and writings, and also document the activities of the American Copyright League, of which Johnson was secretary, between the years 1880-1929. less

Edward Hugh Sothern (1859-1933) was an American actor and author who appeared on the New York and London stages; Julia Marlowe (1865-1950) was a successful actress in New York. They became co-stars in 1904, were married in 1911, and toured, mainly in Shakespeare plays, until her final retirement in 1924. Sothern devoted much of his later years to public readings, lectures and writing. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, theatre materials, financial and legal papers, and photographs. Correspondence, ca. 1860-1950, is between Sothern and Marlowe and with colleagues, family and friends; other correspondence concerns business and legal matters. Literary papers, ca. 1908-1929, contain notes, copy books, drafts, and typescripts of essays, poems, lectures, articles, and books by Sothern and Marlowe. Volume 3 contains correspondence with Marvyn Scudder and others concerning the death in action of Jack Scudder in France during World War I. Volume 4, Marvyn Scudder scrapbook, is a journal and scrapbook with entries by members of several generations of the family of Moses L. Scudder (1843-1917), railroad president and financier of Halesite, Huntington, recording family matters and social activities, with particular reference to the upbringing of Marvyn and Philip Johnston ("Jack") Scudder. Isaac Strange Dement (1855-1928), stenographer, publisher and teacher, was the official reporter of the Eighth Judicial System of Michigan, editor of the National Stenographer, and founder of Dement College in Chicago (1897). Helen Wilmans Post (1831-1907) was an American journalist, publisher and proponent of the mental science movement which stressed control of mind over matter. She started her own paper, The Woman's World, and published a weekly magazine, Freedom. Henry Marcus Leipziger (1854-1917) was an educator, lecturer and teacher. Born in England, he came to the U.S. as a child and settled in New York City. He established the Hebrew Technical Institute and became its director between 1884 and 1891. Other positions he held were Assistant Superintendent of New York City public schools and Supervisor of Lecturers. He was active in various historical societies and community organizations. Collection consists of addresses and lectures of Leipziger and others, correspondence, resolutions, notes, scrapbooks, and printed matter that relate to Leipziger's career as a lecturer and educator. Bulk of the collection is his addresses and lectures, 1875-1917, on education and religion. Collection contains other addresses and papers, 1891-1934. Dr. Henry Reed (H.R.) Stiles was a founding member of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, and its president from 1869-1893. The scrapbook is comprised predominantly of articles from the Register & Times (Rahway, New Jersey) written by Stiles under the pen-name "Tip Top". Most of the articles relate to the Civil War, but many relate to local concerns. Also present are letters from W. R. Coddington discussing the activities of the Union Army stationed in Woodbridge, New Jersey in 1861-1862, and recruiting posters dating from the same period. Other items of note are pamphlets for the Alpine Cemetery Association at Perth Amboy, New Jersey; Wm. H. Berry & Co. Fire Brick trade catalog; a typed facsimile of the 1775 Plain-Dealer from 1894; by-laws of the Pike Guard and, 3rd Regiment, New Jersey State Militia; and an invitation to Dr. Stiles to attend the opening ceremonies for the Brooklyn Bridge less
