Charles Patrick Daly (1816-1899) was an American jurist, lecturer and writer who served as a judge of the New York City Court of Common Pleas for over forty years, the last twenty-seven as chief justice. Maria Lydig Daly, his wife, was active in the Democratic Party and various welfare organizations of the Civil War period. Her diaries of this period were published in 1962 under the title: Diary of a Union Lady, 1861-1865. Papers include correspondence; legal papers; writings and lectures; personal and legal scrapbooks; and diaries and notebooks. Also included are papers belonging to Maria Daly, wife of Charles P. Philburn (Phil) Friedman (1921-1988) was an American stage manager. Friedman managed numerous Broadway and West Coast theater productions, many of them musicals, including Kismet (1953), How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1961), Pippin (1972), Chicago (1975), and Dancin' (1978). He worked with director, writer, and choreographer Bob Fosse for nearly 15 years, and played the part of the stage manager in Fosse's 1979 autobiographical film, All That Jazz. He also worked extensively with directors Cy Feuer and Abe Burrows. The Phil Friedman papers (1805-1979) document Friedman's general interest in theater and to some extent, his work as a stage manager. The Tilden and Hazard family scrapbooks were assembled by Laura Pelton Hazard. Hazard was granddaughter of Samuel J. Tilden's sister Mary B. Tilden. Laura Pelton married William Ayrault Hazard in 1885; the couple had six children. This collection contains photographs, clippings, letters, programs, and other ephemera and memorabilia related to the Tilden family and the Hazard family. The majority of the materials concern Laura and William Hazard and their children, including photographs that show the family at their home Meadow Hall in Cedarhurst, Long Island, as well as on vacation in various locations. Other material relates to family ancestry, Cedarhurst society, and William Hazard’s polo career. Materials related to Samuel J. Tilden and the Tilden family are largely in volumes 1 and 2 and box 1, and include photographic portraits of Tilden family members; correspondence such as letters written by Samuel Tilden to his parents and sister while he was a student at Yale; and clippings such as political cartoons depicting Tilden. less

Adam W. Spies (1800-1891), the son of Mary Bergh and John Spies, was a hardware and military goods merchant in New York City. He was employed by the firm of C. & J. D. Wolfe, and was their agent in England in the 1820s. In 1834 he established A. W. Spies & Company, later Spies, Kissam & Company, retiring in 1866. He acquired extensive landholdings in New York City, upstate New York, and numerous other states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey, and Wisconsin, among others. In 1832 he married Sarah Ann Morrison (d. 1883), daughter of John C. Morrison of Monmouth County, New Jersey. Spies was a founding member of the Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor.The Adam W. Spies real estate and genealogy scrapbook is primarily a record of his real estate transactions, containing numerous manuscript plat maps, many in watercolor with extensive annotations; a few printed maps; listings of properties, taxes and assessments; and legal notes. Holdings in Manhattan and Williamsburg, Brooklyn are especially well documented. Genealogical materials include charts and notes concerning the Spies, Morrison, and Bergh families, and autobiographical accounts, with advice to grandchildren, recalling his career, his service as a volunteer fireman, and life in Manhattan prior to the building of the Erie Canal and Croton Aqueduct. The volume also contains pasted clippings, certificates and receipts, cut silhouettes of Spies, and a few sketches, notably a watercolor street view by Spies of his father’s place of business in Manhattan as depicted in 1808. There are some miscellaneous letters and notes relating to family and real estate matters, some loose, including a genealogical inquiry to his son-in-law John W. Cochrane dated 1907. A few of Spies’s genealogical entries are updated to 1930. Volume 3 contains correspondence with Marvyn Scudder and others concerning the death in action of Jack Scudder in France during World War I. Volume 4, Marvyn Scudder scrapbook, is a journal and scrapbook with entries by members of several generations of the family of Moses L. Scudder (1843-1917), railroad president and financier of Halesite, Huntington, recording family matters and social activities, with particular reference to the upbringing of Marvyn and Philip Johnston ("Jack") Scudder. Hatteras with the C.S.S. Henry Alexander Scammell Dearborn (1783-1851) of Roxbury, Massachusetts was a politician, militia officer, author and horticulturist. Born in Exeter, New Hampshire, he was the son of Henry Dearborn (1751-1829), an American army officer and statesman, and Dorcas Osgood Marble. The Henry Alexander Scammell Dearborn writings comprise six scrapbook volumes containing his published writings, speeches, and reports, and Dearborn's collected papers regarding his role in the 1842 Dorr Rebellion in Rhode Island. The volumes were compiled by Dearborn for his family between 1844 and 1849; contents date from 1806 to 1849. Horticulture and American politics and government are the chief topics represented in his writings. A few illustrations, mostly botanical, are found within. less

David H. O'Keefe was a shorthand reporter in New York City, active between 1880 and 1926. He was managing editor of Shorthand & Typewriting News, librarian and editor of the New York State Stenographers Association, contributor of shorthand articles to business periodicals, and active in the National Shorthand Reporters Association. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, photographs, and artifacts related to shorthand and the typewriter. Correspondence, 1893-1923, contains letters concerning shorthand and related subjects. Writings include speeches by O'Keefe and others, drafts of monographs including The History of Typewriting, and shorthand notes and notebooks. The George Cochrane Hazelton Papers consist of diaries, correspondence, ledgers, promptbooks, scripts, photographs, clippings and programs from 1848-1941, documenting Hazelton's private and professional life. After his death, his wife, as executor, maintained the business correspondence and records until 1941. George Ingraham Willis (1912-1988), a native New Yorker, conducted research on the history and genealogy of the Willis family. The collection is primarily composed of his research notes, correspondence and the original documents he assembled relating to the Willis, Ingraham, Davenport, Davis and allied families. The original documents include legal and personal papers of his immediate family, as well as of earlier ancestors. Frank Jenners Wilstach (1865-1933) was an American theatrical business manager, press agent, author, and compiler of A Dictionary of Similes. In addition to the dictionary, which was first published in 1916, he wrote a book and articles about Wild Bill Hickok. Collection consists of correspondence, writings and other papers of Frank J. Wilstach and his father, John A. Wilstach. General correspondence, 1873-1933, concerns business matters and research on Wild Bill Hickok. Family correspondence, 1772-1933, contains genealogical information and letters of related families. Writings include articles, plays, poems, biographical sketches, notes, clippings, and some correspondence about particular writings. Wild Bill Hickok materials consist of manuscript and printers copy of Wilstach's book plus photostats and clippings used in his research and clippings of reviews. John Foster Carr (1869-1939), lecturer and author, promoted the education and Americanization of immigrants, particularly Italian immigrants. He was founder and director of the Immigrant Publication Society; was active in the American Library Association (ALA), promoting the "Books for Everybody" campaign in New York City; and helped with the ALA's book drive for U.S. armed forces, ca. 1918-1920. He wrote a series of guides to the U.S. for Italian, Jewish and Polish immigrants; and wrote or edited other books and articles on immigration, libraries, Thomas Jefferson, and the Declaration of Independence. Collection contains correspondence, materials relating to "Books for Everybody" campaign, writings by Carr and his family, photographs, and printed matter. Correspondence, 1909-1940, concerns his activities as director of the Immigrant Publication Society, his series of guides for immigrants, speaking engagements, and personal and family matters. "Books for Everybody" materials include legal and financial records, notes, memoranda, and scrapbook of clippings. Charles Alexander Nelson (1839-1933), librarian and bibliographer, was a Reconstruction administrator in New Bern, North Carolina, for a decade following the U.S. Civil War. He returned to the North in 1875 and worked until 1909 in various libraries. He published bibliographies, indexed books and organizational records, wrote articles, and was a founding member in 1876 of the American Library Association. Collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, legal and financial documents, reports, organizational records, scrapbooks, photographs, and printed matter that document Nelson's career. Bulk of the collection is correspondence, 1859-1930s, concerning his work in North Carolina after the Civil War, his positions at the Astor, Howard Memorial, Newberry, and Columbia College libraries, and his activities as a bibliographer, indexer and writer. Edna Pearl Clay Goodspeed (1884-1963) was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution who served as a nurse overseas during World War I. Her ancestors included Revolutionary War soldiers Charles Mathewson, Capt. Aaron Coe, David Clay and Capt. Samuel Cobean, and tailor Otis Madison, who pioneered a new system for garment measuring and cutting in the early nineteenth century. At the time of Goodspeed's death she was preparing a history of the the Clay family of Ohio and related Pennock, Mathewson, Madison, Pontius and other families, entitled Some Ohio Pioneers. Her writings, notes and research materials were given to genealogist Helen B. (Blanchard) Hartman with whom Goodspeed had been collaborating before her death. The Clay family genealogical research papers consist of genealogical scrapbooks; correspondence of Edna Clay Goodspeed and Helen B. Hartman relating to their genealogical research on the Clay family and related Pennock, Mathewson, Madison, Pontius, Cobean, Hanna, Brinckerhoff, Coe, and Boyd families, with notes and family trees; some personal papers, 1916-1957, of Edna Clay Goodspeed; and the manuscript of Goodspeed's work, Some Ohio Pioneers. Documents include 1795 deed for land in Onondaga County, New York, and 1833 certificate for judicial appointment in Cayuga County. Varian Fry, born in New York City in 1907, was known as "the American Schindler" for his work in aiding over 2,000 endangered people from Nazi-occupied France until he was ousted by the Vichy government in 1941. In the final years of his life, Fry took on the role of family genealogist, collecting correspondence and other material belonging to members of his extended family, and researching his family's origins. The Varian Fry genealogical research papers contains personal papers belonging to members of Varian Fry's extended family dating from 1829 to 1921, family photographs, correspondence relating to Fry's genealogical research dating mainly from 1958 through 1962, and a comprehensive index to the research. less

The Warner Family genealogical research papers consist primarily of the notes and correspondence generated by Mildred Warner Nunn in the course of tracing her family's lineage, as well as an assortment of collected family papers dating from 1633 to 1920. Mildred Warner Nunn was an amateur genealogist working from 1960 to 1962 who traced her descent from the first pastor of the Dutch Collegiate Church of New Amsterdam and to William Warner, who settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts in 1637. less

The Anne Haight Lee papers consist of a scrapbook, photographs of members of the Lee family, and two manuscripts relating to her family genealogy. The scrapbook, compiled by her father, Robert Perine Lee, contains newspaper clippings, photographs, letters, and other documents from the 1840s through 1910 concerning the Lee, Wiltse, Haight, and Van Wyck families as well as popular news stories. The photographs include pictures of Anne Haight Lee and her husband Earle O. Titus, her father, her mother Anna Miller Haight, her brothers Samuel Van Wyck Lee and Robert P. Lee, Jr., and her grandparents Samuel Haight, and Caroline Bines. Most images date from the 1890s, although there are also several unidentified ferrotypes of children from an earlier date and snapshots of Mr. and Mrs. Titus, 1927-circa 1950. The manuscripts include notes on the life of Andrew Miller and his descendants, including Robert Perine Lee, and notes entitled "Wiltse of Fishkill on Hudson," which trace the ancestry of Lee's grandmother Elizabeth Wiltse. The Albert Shaw Papers contain correspondence (professional and personal); files concerning the books, articles, and speeches Shaw authored, administrative records and articles from the Review of Reviews; and many records of Shaw's personal life, including financial records, scrapbooks, photographs, ephemera, and his notes on the Shaw family's genealogy, as well as Shaw's personal memoirs. Materials range in date from 1827 to 1953, with the majority of the records falling between 1890 and 1947. Albert Shaw (1857-1947) was an editor, journalist and scholar who spent most of his career as the editor and publisher of the Review of Reviews, a digest of progressive thought and political analysis. Shaw's principal interests were the improvement of municipal government, the relationship of business and organized labor, agricultural reform, international affairs, and contemporary politics and economics, topics which he wrote and spoke on frequently. less

The Order of United Americans was formed in New York City in 1944 as a nativist benevolent association of American-born laborers. It quickly attained nationwide membership. Though it did offer some retirement benefits to its members, it was mainly considered a means for disseminating anti-Catholic and anti-foreign propaganda. Many of its tactics and rituals were taken up by the Know-Nothing party in the 1850s Records include correspondence, official notices, programs, orations, and a New York City scrapbook.
