The Lesbian and Gay History: Defining a Field conference records (1994-1995) reflect the planning of and interest in this groundbreaking conference held at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center on October 6-7, 1995. The conference, sponsored by the Ph.D. program in history at the CUNY Graduate Center and the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies (CLAGS), brought together scholars from across the United States to discuss and disseminate ideas pertaining to the research, teaching, and documentation of the history of the LGBTQ community. The conference included graduate student panels and sessions focused on archives, sources, and methodology and teaching lesbian and gay history. The records reflect the work of the conference organizers, specifically David Nasaw, chair of the CUNY Graduate Center history program and graduate student Tracy Morgan, and indicate the involvement of prominent scholars and activists. Alpheus Sherman (1779 or 1780-1866) was a New York City lawyer, judge, and politician. During the War of 1812 he served as a captain in the 41st U.S. Infantry Regiment under the command of Colonel Robert Bogardus, stationed at Sandy Hook, New Jersey and in Brooklyn, New York. The Alpheus Sherman papers, 1804-circa 1844, consist of a numbered series of correspondence and documents, including letters dating from his service in the War of 1812 during the years 1813-1815, and unnumbered documents pertaining to veterans' claims for military bounty lands, 1815-1817, with a printed speech given by Sherman in 1832. The bulk of the correspondence is personal, chiefly Sherman's letters to his wife Hester in New York City during his military service and his time in Albany as a State assemblyman and senator, mentioning his various activities. Correspondents include Cornelius S. Van Winkle, Congressman Silas Wright, Jr., Colonel Robert Bogardus, and other Sherman family members. less

John Dod Ward (1795-1873) was an American marine engineer who lived and worked in New Jersey, Vermont, New York, and Montreal. His son, Charles Dod Ward (1838-1915), was a civil engineer who married Ada Davey, daughter of Henry Lewis Davis and Jane Moore Sprong of Oswego, New York. The John Dod Ward family papers date from 1800 to 1936 and document the activities and lineage of the Ward, Roburds, Davis, and Sprong families through correspondence, business papers, diaries, photographs, and genealogical research files. John Dod Ward and Charles Dod Ward are the best-represented individuals in the collection. less

Abram S. Hewitt (1822-1903) was a New York lawyer, politician, and iron manufacturer. These three letters were written in 1849 by Hewitt to industrialist Peter Cooper, while Hewitt was in Philadelphia; Bordentown, New Jersey; and Sandusky, Ohio. In these brief communications, Hewitt mentions coal and nail supplies (presumably for their Trenton Iron Company) and refers to the lack of cholera in Sandusky during the 1849 cholera epidemic. less

Louis D. Carman (1860-1936) was a medical examiner in the United States Bureau of Pensions and a collector of Lincolniana. His father, Ezra Ayer Carman, was a Civil War officer. The Louis D. Carman collection dates from 1828 to 1923 and consists of items accumulated by Louis D. Carman, specifically correspondence and autographs; a friendship album containing poetry; and handwritten excerpts transcribed from books about fishing. A variety of documents bear the signatures of politicians and federal government officials; military generals; and businessmen. Simon Gratz (1840-1925) was an American lawyer and philanthropist of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Simon Gratz collection of letters of prominent American physicians and surgeons comprises sixty autograph items, chiefly letters. Each name is represented by one item; an additional autograph item written by Samuel Bard is not found. Prominent letter writers include Jacob Bigelow, Silvester Gardiner, David Hosack, and Samuel L. Mitchill. Recipients are chiefly persons in the medical field, but clergymen, scientists and other professions are also represented. Among them are James H. Armsby, Amos Eaton, Jedidiah Morse, and William H. Seward. Autograph items include several death certificates, and part of a medical work by Edward Miller (1760-1812). less

David Barish Feinberg (1956-1994) was a writer and AIDS activist in New York City. After graduating From M.I.T. in 1977, Feinberg lived briefly in Southern California before moving to New York City in 1979, where he earned a graduate degree in linguistics at New York University, and became a computer programmer for the Modern Language Association while writing in his spare time. His three published books are Eighty-Sixed (1989), Spontaneous Combustion (1991) and Queer and Loathing (1994). Diagnosed as HIV-positive in 1987, Feinberg was active in ACT UP for the next seven years. He died of AIDS-related illnesses in November 1994. The collection consists of correspondence, writings, other personal papers, and photographs of David Feinberg, mostly pertaining to his life in New York, as a writer and a gay man in the age of AIDS. The bulk of the correspondence is incoming from friends and relatives and concerns personal matters. Writings include novels, stories, articles and memoirs by Feinberg (and one box of writings by others) with many drafts and sketches for uncompleted works. The collection also contains printed materials about AIDS and ACT UP; personal files containing desk calendars for 1981 through 1993, financial records, and other items; photographs of gay rights demonstrations, parties, vacations, and family gatherings; and sound recordings. less

The records of the Lavanburg Foundation contain meeting minutes and administrative files documenting the activities of the foundation, records of construction of the Lavanburg Villages, and files on grants awarded. Materials are organized in three series (Administrative Files, Lavanburg Villages Project, and Grants), and range in date from 1927 to 2011. The Fred L. Lavanburg Foundation was established in 1927 as a low-income, non-profit housing corporation for families with children who were unable to find housing elsewhere. The Lavanburg Homes were constructed in Manhattan in 1927, and in 1956, were donated to New York City. In the 1960s, the Lavanburg Foundation took on a second construction project, building the Lavanburg Villages in the Bronx. From 1927 to 2006, the Lavanburg Foundation also provided seed-money grants to organizations assisting in the foundation's mission of providing better housing and social support for low-income families.
